Yep. When they're letting them in as refugees, and kicking out Afghans who are here legally (albeit on temporary status) because "Afghanistan isn't so bad now", I don't see how anyone could give them the benefit of the doubt.


Sort of like how for a long time, these MAGAs say things like "I'm not against immigration--they just need to do it legally." Which, I'm sympathetic to, although that means we need a legal process that is more viable, but that's another discussion...

...but now we have the Trump administration outright breaking the law themselves and ignoring court orders to deport immigrants who DID come here legally. Now, maybe many MAGAs with an obsession with immigration weren't really wanting that, but they overwhelmingly don't seem to have any problem with it, either. I can't think of any I've seen say "I broadly approve of what he's doing on immigration, but this is too far." I have seen some make batshit attempts to justify it (via outright falsehoods, and usually some tortured logic.)

In any case, it's hard to continue to accept that, generally speaking, their concern was primarily with upholding the law.

^^It could be to emphasize that the guy doesn’t have some complicated immigration status, which always invites debate for MAGA bigots. This country’s immigration law has been patchwork, unorganized, slow moving and stupid for decades, and unfortunately there are quite a few people with unclear or “processing” statuses. The reality is this gives the Trump Admin legal room to deport some of these folks. The author seems like they wanted to make it clear that wasn’t the case here, the 14th amendment is pretty clear to all but the really purity obsessed nazis.

Thats part of the problem with democrats messaging. Even going back to Obama he never defended the principle of America as a melting point— his messaging was secure borders and a pathway to citizenship but they never did the latter. They left it up to cbp to essentially just look the other way for people who weren’t doing violent crimes

Democrats need to be serious about a pathway to citizenship and have to talk about the principles of citizenship— if you live, love, and worship in a place you call home it’s up to government to find a way to recognize that, not bureaucratically nitpick on paperwork. Government of the people, by the people, for the people includes undocumented people who’ve made this their homes. It’s similar to marriages, youre not married because you filed a form that trump agrees with, youre married socially and culturally and the government recognizes this for a narrow set of purposes.

For people’s immigration status to be durable and not able to be changed via EO, immigration reform really needs to pass Congress. The Dream Act has been introduced a half dozen times, including before Obama in the Bush years. It never passes. I don’t think there is any level of messaging that would have made a difference in those fights. Most of what those bills offered to Dreamers wasn’t even that great, but when you drill down into the opposition, the bills failed because they weren’t cruel enough. Latent Trumpism.
