A great American hero

I think with 29 seconds left in OT, UNC turned the ball over on the inbound but the refs missed it.Dude had the ball with one (possibly two) feet behind the baseline getting read to inbound the ball and was hit from behind by his teammate and dropped the ball inbounds. Then he picked the ball up while still out of bounds and threw it in.[Edited on January 28, 2018 at 1:51 AM. Reason : OT]

Love how there is no mention of our win on espn's NCAAM page.Meanwhile...https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/nc-states-huge-win-at-unc-can-drive-the-wolfpack-into-the-ncaa-tournament/

^^ right after the game on the ESPN appthey can’t help themselves
1/28/2018 7:47:45 AM
Yeah, I was annoyed that there was no mention of it at all on ESPN.But I'm appeased because now the fans are going from blaming specific players for the loss to turning on each other for being bad fans.

I don't mind the no call on our last shot in regulation but the foul on the put back to send unc to the line? I've watched and I can't see what is being called there at all other than he fell down trying to make an acrobatic putback. Pretty lucky that didn't fall, because that is how we typically lose that game as he makes a free throw and we lose by 1.

Anyone have a link to replay it?
1/28/2018 9:12:04 AM
Yes, please, a replay link would be awesome. The game tipped off at 2 am over here.

I found the condensed game, but would still love the actual full game if anyone finds it.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3a5NJ2F6ofY

It was great to see Markell and Al Freeman step up with Yurtseven having a quieter game than he has been having. Even Dorn hit some clutch shots, he just needs to eliminate the three point travel from his game and he is a solid contributor.
1/28/2018 10:04:02 AM
Give it a day or two and cylonwolf will have the whole game on YouTube.
1/28/2018 10:04:48 AM
And CylonWolf already has it up. Dude is doing god's work.Wait, it's the women's game. Which is still awesome. But not this one.[Edited on January 28, 2018 at 10:46 AM. Reason : I got bamboozled.]

amazing offensive performance but on the rewatch, it was easy to spot the source of our defensive problems. we are terrible at help defense. our guys move to help position but almost always get caught in no mans land when they dont position their feet in the path of the drive to fully commit in help. they usually fan or reach at the drive or go for the last second block at the basket resulting in a ton of layups and shooting fouls. if the driver opts to dish or kick, the help defenders man is still open or free to get the weekside rebound everytime because we are in no mans land. incredible athleticism can make up for these kind of poor fundamentals but yurt is especially slow to react and unc targeted him by creating switches and driving at him or dishing to his man. when that didnt happen, maye was camped out on the weakside all game for easy orebs and dishes. thats how they got layups all game. if you watch an early 2000s duke game you will see a team that had it to an art. the help defender would almost always be in front of the basket waiting to the point where opposing coaches had to advise their players to not even bother going all the way in for a layup but to pullup early.

^^^^ Wait why wouldnt the coach just advise them to dish to the now wide open man since the help d has left him completely
1/28/2018 11:01:43 PM
because its on the other side of the court "two passes away" and the other defender on the opposite side of the court "helps the helper" by playing between his man and the helpers man. He has the advantage of being able to rotate while the ball is in the air and everyone else rotates as well. This is why I love watching teams like SAS, UVA, and old school duke. They were able to do this very well. Yes of course if you drive, kick and rotate, eventually someone will be open, and that is what perfect offense looks like. The things is though, most of the great drivers have gotten to the rim their entire life and have a hard time making the adjustment to drive and kick once the d is there. Take Al Freeman in a lot of games this season as the perfect example. He drives into help and forces the layup. Refs often have a bias to not call fouls on these plays as they would "bail out" the guy driving straight into help even when they are fouled. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wewSQtI44ZUIts fundamentals. Most teams do 5 on 4 drills so that everyone can rotate with 1 guy beat.[Edited on January 29, 2018 at 12:46 AM. Reason : battier made a whole career out of getting ran over by drivers ]

One can only hope coach finds this thread and your video link. Maybe we can all kick in a few bucks and get him and the team to one of those basketball clinics... this one looks local and includes a chalk talk with a college coach:https://coachkeattscamps.com/camps-team.php

Ok...elephant in the room...Why didn't yurt just kick out the rebound and run the clock with us up instead of the immediate put back? I'm all for taking your shot, but that gave them time/opportunity to come back on us.
1/29/2018 7:22:55 AM
^I was saying the same thing when it happened. But I guess UNC would have immediately fouled us and then we would have had to sink two FTs to get 2 instead of the for sure 2 point put back.
1/29/2018 7:54:37 AM
you have to take the points there when you have the ball in your 7 footers hands close to the basket.
1/29/2018 9:49:37 AM
^exactly
1/29/2018 9:54:18 AM
points > no points
1/29/2018 10:05:36 AM
Yea we were only up by 1 and don't exactly have any guaranteed free throw shooters. I'll take that easy layup every time.
1/29/2018 10:41:23 AM
yup. take the points. also, it's kinda like in football when they always say the defender should've batted the ball down instead of intercepting it....kinda hard to go against your instincts like that. scoring was good in that situation, don't think it was a bad play. kick it out and unc would've probably fouled, right? so 2 points is 2 points there. kicking it out maybe kills an extra couple seconds, but also his put back was a high % shot.

The defense didn't play super well here. UNC got a lot of easy shots. The offense was just really good, and we got outlier games from a few folks.Yurtseven needs help on defense down low. The other bigs are not helping out enough[Edited on January 29, 2018 at 4:48 PM. Reason : .]
