Most of the storage is probably the photo gallery, which there really is no use for with sites like imgur

Looking at the analytics, most of TWW's storage appears to be BubbleBobble posting "k"

i'll migrate the photo gallery to Amazon S3
1/23/2018 10:34:22 PM
moving the images out of the db and just making pointers to them in some kind of object store like s3 would be a huge speed up. I'm happy to redesign the backend. I could probably get the site down to < $10/month, I'd just need [n]bigman157[/n] or the like to help make the site mostly run in JS

i don't want to get rid of the photo gallery because i have hopes that one day i'll be able to find the picture of my friend's sister, at a bar, flashing the camera. it's on here somewhere.

costs are fixed. no adjustment of boards would change the costs. this applies to photo galleries.I thought that had been covered sufficiently in the thread but, you know, some of you people can't read.I've been on this board since spring of 2000, using many different names, personalities, back stories, etc... While that sounds slightly psychopathic when I say it out loud, it has been awesome because to some extent those personalities were me and I also gained a lot of perspective around how individuals respond to you based on a few small tweaks to your personality. Whenever I've been bored, needed to share a story, wanted to learn something new, or just felt like being a dick this site has been here for me. Seems really weird, but I can't imagine what my life would have been like without it.All that said, and with the thought of tww dying sending shivers down my spine, I do want to see this site die one day. Maybe that is because I just want to be here until the end or maybe it is because there is a certain thread I want to win, but really I think it's the closure that comes from the end of a really awesome series finale. It is with that long winded diatribe that I ask, could we choose a death date for TWW? A date that we all get to know is coming and make sure we live up its best moments until then, rather than getting a 404 error and talking about all the things that we should have posted or done. I'm okay with that date being next year, 5 years, 10 years, etc.. from now, but having a date would be cool. Also, I need time to fusk through all TWW images and grab anything that may be politically useful or spank worthy over the next phase of my life.

Just fuck off. Just stop being a piss baby and log off and delete your bookmark and don't come back. Jesus. Just shut the fuck up. You can kill it for yourself. Just stop visiting. Nuke the domain name in your HOSTS file. Drink a gallon of fucking bleach. Show some agency, some self-determination. Fuck's sake.[Edited on January 24, 2018 at 1:06 PM. Reason : ///]

I know a way you can make some good money! Offer to erase all traces of people (and clean their digital footprint up) for a fee. I'm sure there are many people that would not mind having all posts/treads/mentions/pictures of themselves deleted.I just searched my digital footprint...fucking tww comes up

Sports Talk right now is great example of why you need to ban earl, preferably infecting his computer with a virus that will make it explode and kill him.

he can be insufferable. i don't really think he should be banned

other than the fact that he has single-handedly killed Sports Talk, sure

So, I just swung back by, after 7 or 8 years...has there been discussion on why users dropped off (irony in my question noted)? I've mentioned TWW to some of my company's NCSU interns in the past and more or less they've never heard of it...back in the day it was a staple for college life.
2/11/2018 8:29:41 PM
It's been discussed ad nauseum in other threads. It's some combination of the following:-Dominance of social media platforms with greater functionality/flexibility/visibility-TWW isn't mobile friendly and nobody uses a computer anymore-Lack of advertising on-campusThat isn't an exhaustive list by any means; plenty of people put forward plenty of theories. But those seem to be the most plausible, to me.At the moment, TWW's membership is comprised overwhelmingly of people who graduated a long time ago - often, more than a decade. This means that on those rare occasions when actual students do look at the board, they see a bunch of geezers and run back to Instagram or whatever. Meanwhile a lot of those geezers have dropped off over the years. They have families and jobs and no free time, or they've been sucked into other social media, or they've started to feel too mature for this site, or, far too often, they've straight-up died. Before that, TWW had a long and proud history of trolling and abuse that probably kept a lot of people at arm's length. It's possible that there was some crucial moment years ago when all of the above trends could be held at bay with even a trickle of fresh blood, but we chased it away. I don't know how much stock I'd put in that, but the possibility has been put forward. But really it's impossible to know why we are where we find ourselves. It should suffice to know that there's probably not any reversing it, with a leader who is uninterested in doing so (not that I fault qntmfred one bit, and he deserves the TWW Lifetime Achievement Award for keeping this place alive for as long as he has). Even if we all rallied together to do something, at best we could make a mobile-friendly site and do some advertising - neither of which will make us younger or make facebook/twitter/instagram/snapchat go away.In my initial post here I said I thought TWW had to be let to die, but that's not really true; I'm glad that it's still here and I did my bit to make it so. It's still fun to me. But the rest of what I said remains accurate. There's no stopping the inevitable, only delaying it.
2/11/2018 9:25:30 PM
^ bullshit on "the inevitable"there is no reason this site has to die. It will absolutely die if no one cares about it, but as this thread shows there are still people that care about this community enough to drop some cash for a premie to keep it alive. It will likely continue to produce less and less content if no changes are made. But there is a path forward, we just have to define what that path is.Everyone may look to qntmfred to determine the direction of the site, but that's not necessary (just necessary to keep the server/code running). Everyone else on this site can help determine the direction to drive more participation, more energy, or more content.1. Why do we want TWW? Entertainment and escape from our day-to-day lives? Ability to (somewhat) anonymously interact with people with similar backgrounds or interests? Keep up to date with NC State related sports, news, or events? Find people to remember or relive college memories? Keep in contact with or establish connections with people from our university (maybe not personal connections, but loose internet familiarity)? Resource for students to connect with one another or interact with alumni?2. Who are the people who would be interested in TWW? Current students? Students from 2000-2012? All NC State Alumni? All NC State Fans?3. How do you reach your target audience for the reason they would be interested in TWW? Pick a Why from step 1, pair it with an audience from step 2, and determine whether the site can meet that need today, what changes would need to be made to meet the need, and determine a way to reach those you want to serve.Anyone can help shape this site. Create a thread relevant to your interests, participate in other threads, mention TWW virtually (or if brave enough, in person). If people actually want to create a strategy to revitalize TWW, I'm game. You can't be everything for everybody, but we can certainly appeal to an audience.
