It is a challenge because you are gonna get canned if you can't compete with those two schools.
2/20/2017 3:27:47 AM
No.
2/20/2017 6:17:00 AM
Yes it is. I said it a different thread, but it is the exact same issue with Schalke. Since they are rivals and neighbors of BVB, they can't be happy with a consistent level of success where they are borderline champions league every year. The expectations are higher, and the coaches are given a short leash and grace period to prove what they can do before they are canned.
2/20/2017 7:26:03 AM
No

Archie miller's wife threw up a wolf hand!! He's coming!!!

we aren't asking to be on the same level as Duke and UNC. State fans can certainly be unrealistic at times...but we aren't saying "be top 10 every year or else".
2/20/2017 8:34:41 AM
2/20/2017 9:36:53 AM
this is a really good article on the very subject y'all keep arguing abouthttp://www.dukebasketballreport.com/2017/2/20/14666072/why-does-the-media-hate-nc-state-ac-basketball
2/20/2017 9:46:15 AM
Here is the thing about the job now though versus last time it was open. We arent going to compete with UNC or Duke so long as Roy and K are there. However, we are now 6 years closer to them retiring than the last time. We have seen how well both of those programs did when those guys weren't around. So to say we cant compete with them in the not so distant future is much different. We have one chance to get this right this time around. Those programs are going to have a fall off soon and we have to be positioned to take advantage and build momentum. If we fuck this search up well then we are pretty much fucked for the rest of our lives at least.

Recruiting lists of ACC teams 2011-2016 while Gott was Coach. Giglio is the man.
2/20/2017 10:15:32 AM
So either we are bad at evaluating actual talent or we are bad at developing it
2/20/2017 10:24:31 AM
You need to include his next chart to get the full picture. Gott could recruit, but he couldnt keep his players.
2/20/2017 10:26:24 AM
That is why UNC continues to be good unfortunately. Their guys may not always play as freshman or sophomores but those last two years they just take over for whoever left. That and they have been able to keep guys from leaving too early for the NBA draft pretty well.
2/20/2017 10:33:22 AM
I'm not sure why it is a bad thing if we want to fire someone if they can't compete with UNC/Duke. We have seen UVA, Miami, Louisville, FSU go from shitty/mediocre to competing with and beating UNC/Duke after they made the right hires. If anything, seeing those programs have success makes me less patient with our coaches than watching UNC/Duke.Had we had even a mildly competent AD after Sendek left, we could be doing the exact same thing those programs have with Sean Miller, Beilein, Marshall or even Calipari. I blame Fowler being a fuckup more than any other reason for the state of our basketball program now. Now that Gottfried has brought us to some level of respectability basketball-wise and perhaps the stink our program had 5 years ago has subsided, I see no reason why the right hire can't put us in the mix of competing with Coach K and Roy while they are still coaching. If FSU and Miami can do it while drawing a crowd in the hundreds for weekend home ACC games, then we should be able to as well.

very interesting to see it laid out like that. Pack Pride is saying that Archie is very unlikely to come here. They're releasing new information about Greg Marshall later. Some speculation that WS is about to get a football team as part of a bid to move into a new conference, etc. may make it so basketball isn't the only show in town / will basically make his job tougher with no added incentive.[Edited on February 20, 2017 at 10:34 AM. Reason : unlikely]
2/20/2017 10:34:36 AM
No way to evaluate the likelihood of coaches coming here or not at this point. Packpride is dumb anyway.
2/20/2017 11:27:57 AM
I haven't been on packpride in several months, usually only go there when recruiting news is ramping up... i can't imagine how stupid it is during a coaching search.
2/20/2017 11:30:05 AM
If they do anything right it's going to be grabbing Archie. I foresaw this a long time ago and have a feeling he's going to accept whatever they give him. I just have a confident feeling he's our guy, but if I'm wrong I'm wrong.
2/20/2017 11:30:11 AM
i'm gonna call up all the pizza places and let them know that i'm happy to buy the pizza if they see yow there with anyone, just in case
2/20/2017 12:00:18 PM
I'm confident there's no way in hell Archie is coming here because he doesn't like nc state. If I'm wrong I'm wrng
2/20/2017 12:15:44 PM
but i mean we tore down harrleson and everything for him

Archie and I went to school together, so i think I'm the best one to ask.
2/20/2017 1:32:57 PM
2/20/2017 1:44:22 PM
2/20/2017 1:49:03 PM
^stupid. one example, Kyle Washington is now averaging 14 pts, 7 rbs in 25 minutes on a #17 Cincinnati. And while I think Dorn has the potential, he really hasn't done much this season. If we're just talking talking about this season, I think the Martin twins would have had more of an effective season.
2/20/2017 1:52:23 PM
^Washington is the one example that I think hurt us. Dorn looked pretty good at the beginning of the year then he lost some play time and didn't look as effective down the stretch.
2/20/2017 1:55:10 PM
Washington is basically the only example... while the rest have transferred only Washington and Painter and Purvis would have seen minutes the next year. The writing was in the wall with the way Gott talked about dorn and Henderson that 1 or both twins wouldn't be playing significant minutes because Gott said so.Of note is these folks transferring and doing nothing at other schools. Tyler Lewis transferred when it was clear he wouldn't be playing over Cat and is avaeraging 10pts 1rb and 4 assists at butler. Not lighting the world on fire. I guess Washington and Purvis just didn't like the coaches ]
2/20/2017 2:12:18 PM
Yeah except they both should have played over Rowan.
2/20/2017 2:14:13 PM
Lol
2/20/2017 2:18:15 PM
How's TDT?Still mad that Gottfried isn't a good coach?
2/20/2017 2:23:30 PM
Ovies said on his podcast that he doesn't think Gregg Marshall will even be contacted. What I'm hearing/reading right now is Will Wade will be our next coach. VCU playing St. Louis Wednesday at 7 if anyone cares.
2/20/2017 2:26:48 PM
Some concern that Marshall spurned us last search after we got "deep in talks" with him and potentially rubbed Yow the wrong way, especially after he just played Alabama recently. If we opt to skip on Marshall, I'd say Archie will be the first call, Wade will be the second call, then Keatts would probably be our 3rd call.
2/20/2017 2:51:02 PM
Can we discuss the reasons people are saying Archie isn't interested?
2/20/2017 2:58:31 PM
-he makes more money than gott did this year-he is comfortable and has a team that is consistently an NCAA tourney at large bid-he is an Ohio native-he is waiting on Ohio State or Indiana to come calling-Duke and UNC are scary monsters; and-Adam Harrington may have banged his then girlfriend (now wife) and left a sour taste in his mouth[Edited on February 20, 2017 at 3:03 PM. 2/20/2017 3:05:53 PM
who is that
2/20/2017 3:08:47 PM
the transfer situation isn't just about recruiting over guys and them leaving for somewhere else. it's partially about roster continuity. if you go into each offseason with major questions about how you plan on filling out the roster for that coming year, that's not really a great way to start. you're starting each roster with a somewhat shaky foundation. it's just not a particularly sustainable way to build a program.
2/20/2017 3:13:04 PM
I understand IU has history, but meh. I don't see him going there. That might be a job no one wants
2/20/2017 3:17:58 PM
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I think Wade would be a great fit here. He's got some swagger like Gottfried, but he's got some toughness to go along with it. Kind of like Archie with a little more charm. He's also one of the youngest coaches in the league. I think definitely "gets it" when it comes to coaching young guys
2/20/2017 3:19:22 PM
If we end up with Keatts or Wade, we could have done a lot worse.
2/20/2017 3:20:33 PM
Adam Harrington was a player on our team once upon a time. I don't know if it takes time to learn our system (if there is one?) but upperclassmen are usually better than freshmen even if they're ranked higher[Edited on February 20, 2017 at 3:22 PM. Reason : Took too long reading ]

2/20/2017 3:40:20 PM
^what is the criteria Yow listed?
2/20/2017 3:51:10 PM
I'm just summarizing what I read/hear not saying anything is written in stone. I work at State and I have friends that work in the media that have been right on some things and wrong on others.Personally, I think Marshall is the slam dunk hire and we should do whatever is possible to get him here. Archie is also very good. Wade and to a lesser extent Keats are both very promising but they aren't really sure bets. I'd give them a shot over USC or Cal's coach though. Chris Mack also seems to have dropped out of the conversation but he'd be another really strong hire. It's all speculation but that's part of the fun/misery of it.[Edited on February 20, 2017 at 3:54 PM. Reason : .]
