hard to know how stupid of a move this is without any details sure as hell looks like the players hated him, though
7/17/2017 1:25:51 PM
Early speculation the players didn't really like/trust Gettleman and some of the moves he's made, and also rumors that Jerry was still annoyed by the Norman move.
7/17/2017 1:40:32 PM
Big Cat must have adopted Shula after the falling out with his sons. That's the only explanation I have for him still being here and Gettleman being fired.
7/17/2017 1:43:00 PM
This is about the Thomas Davis and Greg Olsen contracts.
7/17/2017 1:55:50 PM
Yeah, no one gives a shit if the players like/get along with the GM. Jerry wasn't happy with how Gettleman treated old vets. He'd rather have a team full of old guys on bad contracts then be good.
7/17/2017 1:58:38 PM
it matters if enough players hate him to the point that free agents pass on us because of him
7/17/2017 2:02:04 PM
does Deangelo Williams really think we'll bring his old ass back now

huge fucking mistake. We could be in big trouble for the next decade if we don't hire well again. Fuck man. It was so nice knowing we had a guy willing to make the tough belicheck like decisions. Not get married to has been players in a young man's sport. Going to fuck up the rest of Cam's career if we aren't careful.[Edited on July 17, 2017 at 2:57 PM. Reason : a]
7/17/2017 2:56:25 PM
I probably wouldn't want to do either of those contract extensions either. Good call, Dave
7/17/2017 2:57:43 PM
7/17/2017 3:01:44 PM
Ummm, did y'all miss where we signed a bunch of free agents this offseason? Including one who had previously been in Carolina when DG was here? This wasn't about players not wanting to sign here because we finally had a competent GM, come on.
7/17/2017 3:08:23 PM
didn't say that it was already happening, just that it could get to that pointand I think he did a fine job as GM, but he also had plenty of issuesCam was able to cover up a lot of things, obviously, and he lucked into him
7/17/2017 3:13:08 PM
7/17/2017 3:25:22 PM
He took over a cap strapped team coming off I don't remember how many losing seasons and managed to scrap together a roster than made it to playoffs 3 years in a row plus a Super Bowl berth. Y'all are seriously underselling the man, he did his job exactly the way a GM should, like an emotionless spreadsheet.
7/17/2017 3:30:08 PM
he didn't build that Super Bowl roster, thoughhe had a hand in it. too much credit is given to him for building that team. again, having Peak Cam helped cover up a bunch of holes that would've been glaring with almost any other QB in the league behind centerI'm happy that he got us out of Cap Hell, and he drafted relatively well, but he's not irreplaceable [Edited on July 17, 2017 at 3:38 PM. 7/17/2017 3:37:17 PM
Not enough credit was given to him for building that team despite the cap strapped hell we were in.My prediction for the Panthers future? PAIN.

IT GETS WORSE.http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/07/17/marty-hurneys-name-floated-as-a-panthers-interim-g-m/

7/17/2017 4:39:49 PM
Ok, you guys are gonna get your "players GM" back in Marty Hurney and I'm gonna laugh when he gives Jonathan Stewart a 5 year extension.
7/17/2017 5:20:42 PM
Deangelo Williams 5 years / $90MMBut seriously, chill out. He got us out of cap hell and there is no reason to think the next GM will definitely put us back in it. He made some great moves in his 4 seasons here, but he mishandled some things as well (Norman, Smitty, etc) so thanks for getting us out salary cap hell and best of luck. I'm not gonna shit bricks until I see who we hire or promote in the interim.[Edited on July 17, 2017 at 5:50 PM. Reason : .]
7/17/2017 5:47:36 PM
He didn't mishandle Steve Smith.
7/17/2017 5:55:29 PM
he absolutely didthere was no reason for it to be as messy as it was
7/17/2017 5:58:35 PM
It was messy because Steve Smith is a diva.]
7/17/2017 6:04:11 PM
Jesus... If he really got dumped for mishandling vets... We're fucked.Country club atmospheres aren't good for shit in pro sports and it sounds like that's where we are headed again. I like Olsen too but I'd choose winning over keeping him here longer
7/17/2017 7:31:01 PM
7/17/2017 8:01:41 PM
exactly it's also entirely possible to sign veterans to cap-friendly deals without hardballing themI'm sure there's a way to give Thomas Davis, someone who has put his body on the line more than any Panther ever, a deal that makes both sides happy. there's no need for absoluteism when it comes to a player like him, which seems like what Gettleman was doing[Edited on July 18, 2017 at 12:42 AM. Reason : .]
7/18/2017 12:41:19 AM
I get that the NFL is a young man's game, but if the rumblings are true he was treating Thomas Davis terribly. Big Cat has always liked TD and he is WPMOY winner. He has been a Panther his whole career and been a role model in the community. While Smitty was done wrong Smitty had some warts (Ken Lucas, Anthony Bright incidents). Thomas has none of those other than missing some years with his knees. DG did his job getting us to be competitive and out of Salary Cap jail. The TD and Olsen issues just made Richardson mad and ultimately its his team. I just hope he doesn't bring Hurney back even in the interim role.
7/18/2017 11:34:20 AM
Sounded like TD was going to get another year with DG, at least that's what all these articles have been implying.Idk

7/18/2017 3:31:16 PM
LMAO
7/18/2017 3:34:49 PM
I'll be going back to my casual interest in the Panthers now.
7/18/2017 3:38:02 PM
I guess that mean JStew is in to get a big raise this season.
7/18/2017 3:41:52 PM
Are the Lions gonna rehire Matt Millen now, too?
7/18/2017 3:54:47 PM
This is such a goddamn nightmare hahaha, this season is going to be a shit show. If Cam isn't asking for a trade by season's end I'll consider it a W.
7/18/2017 7:27:08 PM
Well at least now it makes sense why they didn't do this earlier. Didn't want Hurney trading away all the draft picks for guys who won't be on the team in two years.
7/18/2017 8:05:22 PM
Hurney wasn't great, but it's not like he was the one deciding to give huge extensions to Delhomme, Deangelo, etc. He's just doing what Big Cat wanted.
7/18/2017 8:11:15 PM
losing a GM will have no bearing on how good or bad we'll be this season
7/18/2017 9:03:41 PM
pretty sure it has some bearing
7/18/2017 9:05:53 PM
No GM, no assistant GM, no President and there's players/coaches beefing with each other based on Oher's comments. Yeah, I'm sure we'll be just fiiiiiiiine.
7/18/2017 9:20:44 PM
Built in excuse for the season? I'm all in. I was worried I'd have to blame Cam's shoulder.
7/18/2017 10:07:59 PM
Well we couldn't have hired anyone worse. So there's that at least.
7/19/2017 12:55:49 AM
Surely there is someone near Richardson with the balls to ask " are you sure this is a good idea?"
7/19/2017 6:53:42 AM
Yeah, there was. He fired them a couple years ago
7/19/2017 11:07:01 AM
The Panthers firing Gettleman and re-hiring Hurney is one of those nightmares that you immediately know is a dream because it's too unrealistic.[Edited on July 19, 2017 at 11:35 AM. Reason : .]
7/19/2017 11:35:18 AM
a) it's on an interim basisand b) there's a chance he's learned from his mistakes in the past and will no longer give out contracts that are as bad as he did in the pastI just don't see how it's worth freaking out over, especially since the draft and free agency are behind us
7/19/2017 11:48:01 AM
^ hot take.Oh its definitely worth freaking out over
7/19/2017 2:27:43 PM
7/19/2017 2:58:16 PM
Alright let's just wait for the Thomas davis and Greg Olsen nightmare extensions and subsequent injuries and then freak out. Fair?Don't forget we have Star and Trai to figure out this year too. We had a guy who really understands positional value and roster construction. It's a testament to how good his philosophy was because we won despite rellatively unimpressive draft picks and underwhelming free agent signings that proved to be solid value.
