Second most points ever allowed. Dave Huxtable thinks we played bad D.

Creighton looked insane out there. They sliced up our defense like a stick of butter. This is the kind of reality check this team needed to realize their defense iis atrocious. I can't figure why we keep playing these lazy ass man to man or half court defenses. If we are getting killed just drop down into a zone d. Especially when the bench is non-existent to have those guys running around on D like chickens with their heads cut off.
11/20/2016 10:48:25 PM
Creighton pulled our pants down. Man they're good. Might have felt OK abt the loss if we'd played a lick of...FUCKING DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
11/20/2016 10:49:21 PM
Guys, this was a good lost. Creighton is underrated, probably would win the ACC this year. We will be getting the Yurt, Kapita, and Rowan back, and its no coincidence that we lost to Creighton who's a terrible match up for us. Let the season play out, we'll probably improve on defense too . In all seriousness, we got our shit pushed in. There's no excuses for lol 112 points, sorry Gott but that's on you. Hopefully we bounce back tomorrow and I can't wait for Kapita and Yurt to see the court so we see less of Beefjay.

please, sugarcoat our defensive effort
11/20/2016 10:55:36 PM
Have to love Gott just standing there on the bench with his arms crossed staring into outer space. All the while his guys are running around the court like mad men fouling out and have 110+ points dropped on them.
11/20/2016 11:03:06 PM
Again, it's not that bad with all things considered. 1) down 3 guys 2) down 2.5/3 bigs which forced us to use an out of shape Anya that can barely get back in transition3) young team that hasn't played together much / still early4) questionable foul trouble 5) they basically had home court advantage with the support they brought6) it's the #22 team that just took out the #9We still put up 95 points. We finally got off some 3s. They're looking more confident. We need to work on defense. Despite all that, we played one of the best/hottest shooting teams pretty damn close until depth and fouls overcame us. The sky isn't falling
11/20/2016 11:06:53 PM
oh when i listed the things anya cant do, he also cant guard the pick and roll basically what im saying is anya sucks
11/20/2016 11:07:08 PM
I want to put the blame of the defensive effort on the bigs but honestly it seemed like every player on the team is not good at it.
11/20/2016 11:10:45 PM
If Rowan was healthy we would have given up 150
11/20/2016 11:15:01 PM
This will be looked at as a good loss on selection Sunday. With all we were missing, with as good as they'll be...this won't hurt us at all at the end of the day
11/20/2016 11:23:42 PM
This was a good opportunity to rotate in guys that aren't going to get much more PT. Anya, Kirk and Hicks aren't going to see these kinds of minutes once we have everyone back
11/20/2016 11:36:24 PM
Our highly rated perimeter players let unranked players walk by them on perimeter D, too.
11/21/2016 12:49:34 AM
i had people over for this and am ashamed so heres my ranti laid out all the critical flaws in our d after last game but you guyss ssaid i was trolling because we won but this is what happens when you play a real team with that same defense. o and creighton would not be top 4 in the acc. they cant defend either. we have a guy who is allegedly the most dangerous penetrate in the country jacking 3s. no real coach would let a guy who shoots 20% jack 3s all game. the players just do whatever the fuck they want and thats why we appeal to uncoachable players. tired of some old guy telling you how to play ball? transfer to nc state
11/21/2016 2:55:18 AM
Yea, that was one of the worst defensive displays Ive ever seen. I mean, Creighton is no doubt a great team. Probably a top 10 team. They are good and have tons of weapons. But good lord. Wide open shot after wide open shot. Getting to the basket for layups at will. Out perimeter D was pathetic. I mean, what the hell were we playing? Man help defense? Its like they would pass the ball around the perimeter, and we would cheat toward the guy with the ball and leave someone else completely wide open without someone within 10 feet. Over and over and over and over again. Now I get that ridiculous foul calls killed us for interior defense, but shit, Creighton didnt have near the struggle that we did with guards guarding guards driving to the lane.
11/21/2016 7:23:28 AM
Anyone have any idea where tonight's game will be streaming? I checked the WatchESPN app, and a no-go there. The CBS Sports app doesn't have live streaming, so i'm wondering where i'll be able to watch it.
11/21/2016 8:19:12 AM
Middle of the pack ACC team and NCAA bubble team if we are lucky confirmed as I expected. Glad I didnt even bother trying to find a stream for that game would have just pissed me off more.[Edited on November 21, 2016 at 8:52 AM. Reason : .]

I love the "sky is falling" mentality. Yeah keep posting your "meh we're not going to be that good" messages so you'll either be happy when we match actual expectations or you'll be able to say "look, I told you so".We weren't winning this game with Mav and Kapita, we're starting 3 guys that haven't played in a year and our bench is young and thin(except Anya, nothing thin about Anya). DSJ still needs to get use to the college game, he looks like he's playing AAU half the time he's on the court.Goal has always been to consistently get better throughout the OOC, get our guys more experienced and develop chemistry before the ACC season starts. You could clearly see our potential tonight, at least offensively as we were right there with a veteran ranked team well into the 2nd half. Also, our D wasn't great but we were right there with them until we started getting into foul trouble. Henderson, Abu, and Anya all had foul trouble early, which oddly enough go straight to where guys like Rowan, Kapita, and Yurtseven would provide quality minutes. I mean we were having to play Kirk just to absorb fouls last night, that's how bad the refs were. TL;DR: Relax. Last night's game means nothing. We'll get better.
11/21/2016 9:14:13 AM

Yeah, I really don't feel too bad after that loss. When a team is averaging 11 seconds a possession, they're going to get a lot of points. Our defense wasn't awful all game, though it wasn't great either. Guys just ran out of gas and lost focus.Gotta like what you see from our backcourt guys that game. Dorn, Henderson, and Smith had 65 points and 3 TO's combined. [Edited on November 21, 2016 at 10:06 AM. Reason : ]
11/21/2016 10:00:27 AM
I, too, was impressed with our ability to stay in the game until foul trouble late when the refs started calling fouls every time we made the wind blow too hard near one of their players... But our defense was bad. There is no excuse for the number of times their pg just ran past two defenders to the basket, and there's no excuse for the number of times our man defense somehow left a player on the other end of the floor with literally no one near him. Every time his guy would be getting picked under the basket asking for help. That guy shoots threes why are you so far off him in the first place? It's not just that our defense was bad. It's that our defense was bad and they never got any better at defending the same go-to plays that Creighton ran every time they got the ball.
11/21/2016 10:22:03 AM
We got caught chasing a lot which allowed a Creighton player to drift to an open corner and nail a wide open shot. Stop doing that and we will be fine. I thought the guys played really damn hard last night and when we get Rowan/Kapita/Yurt back, this is going to be a fun team to watch. That being said, I can no longer tell if some of you are trolling or just fucking idiots.
11/21/2016 10:44:11 AM
idiots. a lot of them are idiots. and earl (and face's) troll attempts are beyond lame.
11/21/2016 10:51:46 AM
It's their lack of adjustment that's frustrating. When Creighton's star pg went out and it started being fine for players to chase under those screens it's frustrating that they couldn't make that adjustment. After the first two or three times getting burnt chasing passes to the other side of the court, you'd think that backside defender would learn to stay home but he didn't.In both cases, our defense got burned 20 times on each play and let Creighton have free points without ever figuring out how to stop it. There's something fundamentally scary about incompetence that complete.
11/21/2016 11:01:53 AM
We're never going to be a defensive lockdown team, need to be better but I can live with this. Will be easier when getting back the extra guys so a little more leeway on fouls and defensive energy.
11/21/2016 11:05:11 AM
We will be much, much better with Kapita and Yurtseven added to our frontcourt.Having a starting lineup of Smith, Henderson, Dorn, Kapita/Yurtseven and Abu is going to be very exciting. Hopefully we will never have to play a frontcourt of Anya + Kirk ever again for extended minutes. That pretty much killed our offense last night.
11/21/2016 11:13:21 AM
yeah mav is really going to fix our defensetwo freshmen big men are going to somehow inspire our guards to not get blown by every play.
11/21/2016 11:26:49 AM
I went to both Exhibition games. Omer Yurtseven played in both and didn't do anything impressive. Looked like he was unprepared for the pace of the game. IMO, Kapita will have a much bigger impact for the Pack this season.[Edited on November 21, 2016 at 11:44 AM. Reason : ]
11/21/2016 11:41:14 AM
Mav will help none on defense, and Yurt probably won't either. But Kapita looked VERY active on defense. He's really quick and tenacious for a guy his size. And we obviously need the rebounding help.Give Creighton some credit though. They might be the deepest team in the country (they brought three former starters off the bench), and they can burn you at any spot on the floor. We weren't playing very smart on defense, but we were playing gritty and hard as hell -- even though we basically had one decent sub. I'd say that's the biggest takeaway from this game. These guys fight
11/21/2016 11:43:35 AM
I don't think anyone is saying that Yurt is going to be the gamechanger and I don't think many people would disagree that Kapita looks better and more prepared to make an immediate impact. What people are saying, however, is that either is a an improvement over Kirk and Anya. Anya is a liability in transition every time and he's so badly out of shape he can't play the minutes we asked him to last night. I'm actually surprised he didn't get into foul trouble sooner as his only game seems to be playing swat the ball without much concern if its the ball or an arm that he ultimately gets. However, he has value off the bench in some situations. Mav has scored a lot of points for us and he works his ass off on every play. He's trying to improve and I think he will - usually your sophomore season shows the biggest jump. Hopefully we won't have to use him at the 4 much but at least the option is there if we really get into foul trouble. He's scored a lot of points. Our back court looks like it has the potential to be one of the best in the country. If we get some more options underneath, it will spread their defense out more and allow Smith to feed the ball or drive in himself instead of "jacking up 3s". Right now Abu still doesn't have the sure hands and Anya only get offensive points when he's wide open under the basket. Gottfried had to improvise with what he could in a fairly short time frame not knowing what would happen with Kapita and then Mav. It will be ok guys.
11/21/2016 11:51:30 AM
It's not even about Mav, Yurt, or Kapita being defensive stoppers. Having more bodies means you can absorb more fouls and your good defenders (few as they may be) can exert more energy on defense and get rest inbetween
11/21/2016 12:00:12 PM
The good news is this is the one OOC we could lose and still plan on making the tourney so lets make sure we dont blow any of the ones we cant afford to lose. Yes, I understand some may say thats bullshit, but that is based on how I expect us to be in the ACC this year, which is average at best so we cant blow any silly games in the OOC.

You guys cant be serious. This team is dogshit. That was the worst defense I've EVER seen. Not only were they able to get layups anytime they wanted, we were dumb enough to foul them with reach ins after we'd already given up the layup. That's some of the laziest/dumbest shit imaginable. On top of that just look at how many three pointers they launched that were completely uncontested. At one point it seemed like we were just conceding open 3's to them intentionally. There were at least three separate 3-pointers attempted where we LITERALLY had no one on that SIDE of the court. We wasted what will probably be our best offensive performance of the year. How the hell do you get blown-out when you make FOURTEEN 3's, get to the line 26 times, and only have NINE turnovers? What the fuck is going to happen when we don't play out of our minds on offense? We won't get that many good looks against teams who have better athletes. This team sucks compared to its perceived talent level. Yuertsen better be a God or we are screwed. We almost fell out of the top 100 on defense after last night. It's impossible to be a good team if you don't play any defense.Creighton is a borderline top 20-25 team. And they ran us out of the gym on a neutral court on a night where we couldn't miss. Right now we're not good enough to secure an at-large bid. Things could change if Yuertsen is a beast. But what is the likelihood of that?P.S. What the hell is wrong with Anya... why is he incapable of getting in shape? He could still play professional ball abroad if he'd just do that at least.[Edited on November 21, 2016 at 1:53 PM. Reason : a]

11/21/2016 1:52:29 PM
I am a HUGE Gott defender, but I have to agree with Face. Last night was...concerning. Fortunately, Gott has a consistent history of coaching up his teams so they are playing their best ball come tournament time. But there were so many wide open threes, which really only takes effort (not skill) to defend.
11/21/2016 2:00:06 PM
Hahaha, Creighton is "barely top 25" when they just beat a top 10 team convincingly last week, haha, got it.
11/21/2016 2:11:27 PM
Where's the "adjusted pace stats" guy? 112 points seems like a shit ton compared to typical college basketball where you're supposed to make useless passes for 23 seconds and then use the last seven to actually make a play. The average time of possession against Creighton was like 15 seconds versus the upper 20s for most college games. Despite getting our asses kicked, I liked the pace. I'm fine winning 90-80 and would prefer it over winning 60-50 any given evening.[Edited on November 21, 2016 at 2:27 PM. Reason : ]

Just something to keep in perspective, our guys were tired. They played heavy minutes. Whether you think it's a valid excuse or not, in the typical season, it's usually 2 games a week with 3-4 days rest in-between games. Part of playing uptempo is that you have to be in good shape or at least have a deep bench. I'm treating the defensive effort in this game as an outlier until I see more evidence this season of horrendous defense, emphasis on horrendous. I don't expect the defense to actually be good, I just expect it to be adequate enough that if the name of the game is first to 80 points wins, we'd do enough to get there.
