appreciated what he did while he was here - i hate, for obvious selfish reasons, that he's leaving early. best of luck to him. i don't really blame him for taking the chance on going pro. he's 23, would've been a 5th year senior next year...he is what he is at this point. might as well go get paid (nba, europe, wherever) rather than not getting paid next year.

I really don't understand why he'd go early. This draft is loaded and if he stays a year he'd undoubtedly boost his resume and probably make 1st team ACC.

I really thought he liked it here

he's not gonna get significantly better in a year. he's 23, going to be a 5th senior...he is who he is as a player. might as well get paid to get better and have a shot at the NBA than not get paid. i mean, i can see both sides of it. there's certainly a value in coming back, competing for an ACC title, perhaps getting more recognition, etc. but then there's also the value of getting a pay check - especially in a career where you have a very fixed number potential income earning years before you're too old to play.

It's not so much that he'll improve. And it's a total crap shoot to see if State gets some titles that he could be a part of. I just think this year's draft is absolutely stacked with better competition. Next year just seems like a more favorable time to go.

The too old thing doesn't make sense because he won't magically become too old in one year. The first contract is key and perception is a big part of it. He's not a big name right now and if he became a big name on the national scene, perception of how good he is would have changed a lot. Guys with his skillset are a dime a dozen so perception is really all that can set them apart. The media cliche's like "he just knows how to win" and "i'd want this guy on my team" start when you have a good team. They don't mean anything and scouts should see right through them but they do subconsciously alter perception...If you're looking at two guys and one is a household name who led his team to the final four with media hype and one is the same exact player from the dleague.

You guys saying he should have left seem to think college basketball is pointless altogether. Why not go straight to the pros after high school? Those are all valuable years you could be earning a paycheck against better competition.

^^

The "too old" thing is a personal thing. He obviously doesn't want to fuck around in college for another year...he wants to get paid...whether it's in the NBA, the D-leage, or overseas.

The bottom line is that he's a 24 year old guard...not an 18 year old big man that might be able to develop a jump shot and jump into the lottery. NBA guys have pretty much seen all they are going to see on him. The only thing he could probably do is maybe slightly improve his jump shot (which is already pretty solid) and ball-handling ability. It's not like he's going to add inches to his vertical or somehow he's going to get faster/quicker over the summer. Dude is about 98.5% maxed out.

He's not going to go first round this year or next year...so the "his first contract is important" argument is nullified. He just wants to get out there and start getting paid now. Fuck the dining hall and study hall...dude is going to be fucking broads in Greece next year.

I'm not well versed on European contracts, but it seems like those fuckers jump all over the place. I imagine the first contracts over there are less important than the ones in the NBA.

Its too late to back out of your logic that "one year makes a huge difference" though. If you waste a few years bouncing around before getting a good contract, your career is virtually over from that perspective.

^^ Why would I back out when my logic makes perfect sense? What is he going to do in one more year at NC State that is going to get him that fat European contract you're talking about??

develop skills and reputation as a defender, floor general, and become a better decision maker overall. His offensive skills are set but guys like that are a dime a dozen.

well - you obviously can't go straight to the NBA out of high school. but kids have gone overseas then to the NBA out of high school. college is, in most cases, where you'll make a bigger name for yourself and attract more attention. but lacey's done that for 3 playing seasons (4 total years) in college. how much more can he really prove or gain by staying in college? the difference in going pro this or next seems negligible for a guy like him. in which case it's all personal preference. maybe he's tired of college after 4 years and since a 5th won't improve his stock dramatically, he's decided to go get paid.

i'm not saying it's a good or bad decision. it's a personal decision he made that seems not unreasonable to me.

you may be right...but that, in and of itself, doesn't make it a bad decision for lacey imo.

Earl thinks of Trevor Lacey (and TJ Warren when he made the same dumb argument last year) as College Hoops 2K MyPlayers. Just put all TJ's attribute points that you rack up in his senior season into 3 point shooting and Lacey's into Defensive Awareness, Hands, Quickness, Off-Hand Dribble and Steals. It's that easy folks. That's how you become an NBA 2K lottery pick.

I think some people just have an over-inflated view of how important one more year of college is to most players. Plus...fuck school, man. Nobody likes going to classes and shit.

most players enjoy playing high level college basketball. Its the time of their life unless somethimg goes horribly wrong. They are essentially a celebrity and get everything handed to them including grades amd much better cleaner chicks than you would get as an unknown pro in a place like Bakersfield. All without the sketchy freeloaders constantly after your money.

Yeah, what in the fuck.

(Notwithstanding all of the perfectly sound and reasonable arguments made on behalf of this decision. It's like, well why wouldn't we want to be loaded? Why wouldn't we want to have a chance to win our first conference title in 29 years? Why are we even doing this? Wasn't Trevor Gott's guy? He transferred here to play one damn year?)

"Per a source, Lacey will not be signing with an agent right away, giving him a chance to “test the waters”, so to speak. The NCAA deadline to officially withdraw his name from the draft was April 14th, while the NBA’s deadline to put his NBA into the draft in April 26th. He’ll have a week and a half to decide whether he’s going to put his name into the mix, but once he does, his college eligibility will be over."

he must be reconsidering after the Washington transfer. Lacey's shots per game will increase 200% without Washington on the team

you know Washington shot every ball passed to him in practice too.

testing what waters? i don't think any reputable sports analyst would put him in their 2 round mock, too stacked this year. next year though he probably could have been an early second rounder. however, i get that he's already getting old and wants to get paid now

They're trying to pull the ole bait and switch on Malik Newman or other recruits. Trying to make it look like Trevor's leaving and get someone to commit, and then BAM..Trevor back.
