Haha, "Okay, you can have your precious Start menu back, but we'll put ads in it."All even number Windows versions are terrible. Fortunately, this will be the last. When you give away a flagship product for free and people still don't want it, you know your company is in trouble. The final nail in MS's coffin will be the inevitable hack that releases all of the user data they now collect.[Edited on October 25, 2015 at 6:33 PM. I use my personal laptop pretty differently than I use my work laptop. So from that standpoint, I can't really comment.Personal laptop is for editing photos, wordpress development, music, internet, etc. From that perspective I haven't really had a single complaint about Windows 10. But I'm obviously not a power user or any kind.
10/25/2015 11:47:20 PM
We've started installing it at our company and haven't had any complaints either. In fact a lot of people have been talking about much cooler the interface is and some of the new menus. Other than a few updates failing I haven't had any complaints either. It's on my home desktop as well. I haven't had a single driver, software, or hardware issue to date. I didn't even have to manually re-install a single driver. Not only was it the easiest upgrade (I didn't even do a clean one) but it was the first upgrade I didn't have any compatibility problems with across the board.
10/26/2015 11:14:32 AM
yeah my comment should have been clarified. I was half asleep when I posted that so it is a little unclear my work computer still has Windows 7. So I can't comment on Win10 from an enterprise standpoint like ^ did. But as stated, for personal use, I've really liked it.[Edited on October 26, 2015 at 11:42 AM. Reason : ]

We also use Office 365 and the integration is great compared to 7 or 8.

I upgraded on my laptop that I use for work/DJ and it caused the sound to stop working and for my mouse to lag everytime I did anything net related.I went back to 7 on that laptop. Now my tower finally upgraded...sound is fine but the mouse lag is still there. this thing sucks
12/24/2015 5:22:20 PM
^youve got some kind of screwy driver conflict in both cases. Are you using a custom sound driver? As I learned this fall, apparently most music production folks use the ASIO audio driver (which might have been auto installed if you use Ableton or similar products). These drivers are basically not needed under Windows 10, as the audio stack was completely rewritten. And if you've got mouse lag, there's some major driver problems. Did you run through the hardware company checker before upgrading? Might be worth doing a clean install rather than the in place upgrade.
12/24/2015 10:14:39 PM
Using the beats audio setup on my HP.There was a driver that helped it, the mouse lag wasn't related to a driver apparently...I kept trying lots and lots of ways to get it to work and never did.I prefer the old version.

I didn't create a microsoft account at startup. Am I in the minority of 10 users who don't have a microsoft account? What are the major benefits to creating an account? After reading the article below about encryption key security, maybe it's best not to createn an account.https://theintercept.com/2015/12/28/recently-bought-a-windows-computer-microsoft-probably-has-your-encryption-key/Another microsoft acct question, do I have to create a microsoft acct to install Office on my new computer? A quick glance at Amazon and it looks like with either the key card or download version you have to login to your microsoft acct to install.[Edited on December 29, 2015 at 8:32 AM. Reason : ....]

what is a disadvantage of using a microsoft account?
12/29/2015 10:41:53 AM
^^That article isn't wrong but it's full of hyperbole and misinformation.Yes, if you use a Microsoft Account, it will back up the recovery key for your computer online. Yes, it is theoretically possible that your MS Account could be hacked (keep in mind, Microsoft's identity services haven't ever been systemically breached). The reality is that with Windows 8+, if you forget your password on a local account, you are locked out of your computer, period. Prior to Windows 8, there WAS NO RECOVERY KEY. This isn't an "encryption key". Your disk isn't encrypted. This is where the hyperbole starts. Microsoft added this as an additional safeguard for consumer PC's. Storing it in your secure MS account online isn't a security problem simply because it's not intended for users to ever see or handle it directly. If you want actual disk encryption, use BitLocker (as the article makes a passing mention of). What do you lose out on if you don't use a Microsoft Account in Windows?Synced settings between computers you useOneDriveCortanaMicrosoft App StoreMicrosoft Officeare the big ones. You CAN use a local Windows Account and individually use a Microsoft Account for each of these services separately. But it's a pain in the ass, and frankly not worth the effort to keep them separate. If you buy an iPhone or a Google Play equipped Android phone, both REQUIRE you to have their respective accounts (Apple ID or Google ID). The Microsoft Account in Windows is essentially the same thing.^The disadvantage is that you are sending anonymous usage data to Microsoft. But unless you are a complete Luddite, your Facebook and Gmail accounts are harvesting far more intrusive data than Microsoft ever will. Microsoft collects data to improve their products, Facebook and Google do so primarily to better target you with advertising.[Edited on December 29, 2015 at 11:48 AM. Reason : .]

This is pretty cool:http://www.theverge.com/2016/3/30/11331014/microsoft-windows-linux-ubuntu-bash
3/30/2016 12:39:35 PM
lindows lives!
3/30/2016 1:16:14 PM
It's not a VM either it's native bash.
3/30/2016 2:31:07 PM
so this means developers don't have to buy apple?
3/30/2016 3:47:17 PM
Naw OSX is still the only legit way to code.
3/31/2016 12:12:02 PM
so what does this allow?
3/31/2016 1:12:08 PM
It allows you to use bash in Windows instead of having to use Cygwin or something like Putty to ssh somewhere. I would assume you can now execute shell scripts and stuff via bash within Windows natively...
3/31/2016 1:15:47 PM
so what does that mean?
3/31/2016 1:44:11 PM
Means I can run bash and curl scripts in Windows!
3/31/2016 3:06:56 PM
Strategically this doesn't make sense 2 me.
3/31/2016 3:37:59 PM
How so? Microsoft wants to be more open source.
3/31/2016 3:41:41 PM
3/31/2016 6:41:45 PM
If you don't know what this means you really don't need to worry about it because it's new functionality that you'll never use.
3/31/2016 11:55:28 PM
per the usual, neo talkin out his ass. this is binary translation of linux applications (tested with ubuntu and therefore shipping with ubuntu binaries) for windows. so the default linux shell (bash) will run natively on windows. the greater implication of this is that linux applications can run natively on windows without a virtual machine like virtualbox or vmware. all the folks that asked for macs for dev work I know generally did it because they liked being able to natively use linux build tools and ssh but now these tools run natively on windows. I suspect the mac footprint in enterprise shrinks drastically as windows machines are substantially easier to manage and generally much cheaper.
4/1/2016 12:20:12 AM
Now that's pretty cool. As it happens I have an app in my packaging queue right now that requires Cygwin...if the request had come in a few months later, would have saved me the trouble.

im pretty excited by this

I just kind of assumed from a market perspective the Windows 10 design was aimed at moving away from development and being more of an overpowered browser / tablet / consumer / app-microtransaction OS. To me it feels way more like iOS or a stock android build than OSX. I guess it should be no surprise, that a MS move makes no sense at all. But yeah this is cool. Cygwin sucks almost as bad as dos. On the other hand, a $600 refurbished macbook air has every possible development tool you would ever need within a copy paste or two. Here's the important question: which way are the slashes in this fucker?
4/1/2016 12:18:26 PM
I'm confused as to why you think this is a silly direction from Microsoft when almost every comment, response, and article referencing this move says it's a good thing and a better alternative to Cygwin or running a vm...
4/1/2016 12:34:42 PM
It's because he's an idiot.
4/1/2016 12:45:44 PM
Selfishly this is great because of how much I use command line tools for ETL, data auditing, and writing ad hoc scripts for data handling. Typically we always have to upload data to a landing zone to audit it but doing it locally for POCs on the go (like if wifi isn't available) is great without having to run a VM or Cygwin. Although recently I've been experimenting with Drill in a VM for local data audits which is kinda cool. Personally for many things nothing beats writing some Perl/Python or even simple awk/sed stuff for data audits.

\ or / ?????
4/1/2016 2:54:50 PM
It depends are you escaping a character or designating a directory?
4/1/2016 3:00:53 PM
If it's a native bash shell than I'm sure it must use the standard linux convention of / denoting a directory, otherwise nothing would work.Though it could easily get a little confusing if you're jumping from a windows command prompt straight into a bash window.

So my work computer is saying it's out of memory..Apps & Games says they take up 883 GB of space out of the 913 or whatever total. Checked the other two work computers and they both use ~75 GB total, but they are all the same computer and should be set up the same.Obviously there's not really 883 GB of apps on there, when I click on it to sort them by size the biggest one is about 3, and there's only even 2-3 that are over 1. By my math they should only be using about 9-10.I can't find anything close by googling, but maybe I'm not searching the right words.. If anybody knows how to help it would be greatly appreciated
4/29/2016 9:11:13 AM
Have you sending Microsoft a telegram about this?
4/29/2016 10:49:57 AM
You'd be amazed at the number of analysts at my company who complain because their computer isn't working, crashes, or is slow and you take a look and they're at 0% free space. [Edited on April 29, 2016 at 12:08 PM. Reason : s]
