Again, its not to say that bullying may not have been a FACTOR in some of these incidents, but to claim that it was the main cause is incorrect, simplistic, and dishonest.

The point is that these kids were not normal well adjusted kids, and may have been affected by bullying in a different way than a normal kid.

Also, being bullied for acting like a dick or a moron, like many of the shooters (Eric Harris, Dylan Klebold, Michael Carneal) does not equate to normal bullying.

And a severely psychotic kid (Adam Lanza, Michael Carneal, Seung-Hui Cho) with paranoia, will take taunting and bullying much differently than a normal well adjusted kid.

My point is that bullying alone is a SIMPLE FUCKING ANSWER to a complex tragedy. All I ask is people dig a little deeper and do some research.

---Id also like to point out that all of my info in this thread is based on my knowledge n research, I have Googled or Wikipediaed NOTHING.---"

I think it's clear we really gotta do something to stop the bullying if we're finally gonna put an end to this tragic violence.

I think you are missing my point. And bullying existed long before the mass shooting craze began.

Oh and Charles Whitman, 1960 something (I forget the year and I am not looking shit up cause I dont need to) University of Texas, would be one of the first mass school shootings. Guess what, he was psychotic.

Look. It's simple. End the bullying! End the violence!

Easy peasy.

I spent the whole day thinking about it off and on so I'm feeling pretty confident right now.

And no, i have not been looking this up. I can honestly say that this is based on my research and study over the last 10 years. Im not claiming to be an expert, but I have dug a lot deeper than the soundbites.

I can do a works cited page if needed.

We can talk about bullying all we want, but I think the bigger problem is the media attention. Most of these people have a need to feel important or special somehow and knowing that if they go on a rampage they will be remembered forever is what I believe drives them to follow through. Stop giving these shooters any media attention and I think the trend will turn downhill.

I mean think about it if you are suicidal anyways and just want the attention what better way than to go out guns blazing and be all over the news. It used to be people like this just put a bullet in their head to make their parents or friends feel bad and that was the end of it. Now it seems like its a game to see who can kill the most people.

Do you think that if he emailed his manifesto out, and then got a 'mailer-daemon returned message' error, he would have postponed his rampage until he got the email problem all sorted out?

Perhaps.

That is very true. Part of the culture script which has been written by this trend is the knowledge that they will be famous. An anti-hero if you will. To a disturbed marginalized person who feels weak and emasculated, nothing says masculinity like a violent revenge fantasy going down in a blaze of glory type event. That is how this mass shooting thing BECAME a culture script. In media, movies, music, TV, violence and revenge fantasy is seen as tough and masculine. To normal well adjusted people, it is just fantasy, media, fiction etc. But to a mentally disturbed marginalized kid, it is a real idea. Once you factor in the fact that others have done this before him, and they were made famous, well now the next potential dumbass has a culture script to follow.

The cycle repeats itself. That is the problem with this phenomenon. It feeds on itself.

I don't buy that the "media attention" is a significant factor. That doesn't make any sense. This seems to be the go-to, overly simplistic, easily-digestable explanation that the general public likes to cling to. Even if it was 500BC, there would have been "attention" give to a mass killer. This is human nature, this is the purpose of the news media. I can't see 1) humans changing our desire to know about things like this, it's been this way for literally all of human history 2) someone doing this primarily because they'll end up on the news.

This kid was a nutball from birth. If he was born to a poorer family, he probably would have drifted towards some degenerate behavior that would have got him killed or jailed a long time ago. But because he had his freedom, an unfortunate series of events and circumstances brought him to this point.

I think the 24/7 media coverage, and its increasing sensationalism, and social media, etc, and the increasing me, me, me mentality and the pursuit of fame and instant gratification s a significant factor in a lot of these cases. I'm not sure how you could dismiss it.

Parents track cell phone as body was moved. I'm disturbed that the parents of a 19 year old college girl have the passwords to her apple account, and can track her. Can she have a ounce of freedom?

haven't you argued multiple times that the media attention makes this worse? and that we shouldn't talk about it?

of course each generationg thinks the younger generation is more me/me/me orinented . but i do feel like social media has increased the me/me/me mentality. and it's not just for the younger generation.

Thus the reason I'm saying we shove a monkey up these idiot's assholes after they off themselves. And whenever the news shows a picture of the moron, they don't show a picture of his face; no, they show a picture of the monkey shoved up his ass, so that the thing everyone remembers about him is macabre scene of claws and sphincters in an unintelligible mass

"change the message completely.

Do you think it’s possible? To excise the gun fetishism from Hollywood and the news media, to explode America’s bogus cowboy mythology, to shout down the gun apologists, the NRA goons and those who talk about “responsible” gun ownership, to point out how relying on a gun actually makes you less of a man, not more? Is it possible to re-frame and reclaim authentic masculinity for a new generation of men, a definition in which doesn’t include sexism, violence against women, or guns as the ultimate solution to any problem?

Because the alternative – more shootings, more fear, countless thousands more dead, more unimaginable pain and nearly all of it at the hands of men – is as predictable as it is inevitable."

The message IS being reframed, and the success in doing this is perhaps why the NRA has been so invigorated (and also Obama being half blaxxor). I seem to recall way more cartoons like GI Joe growing up, and having toy guns that actually looked real. Kids cartoons these days don't really glorify gun violence like in the past. And gun ownership has been slowly decreasing.

It's more the "teenage" media that maybe has ramped up in this territory.

There does seem to be an uptick in mass shootings the past 20 years or so, as other violent crimes are in decline. Seems a little odd.

The flip side to this is that mass media and social media actively glorify the death toll/public outcry through promoting viral headlines that sends EVERYONE into a tizzy. Sure, it's tragic that 6 people are dead and more than a dozen are injured, but without YouTube videos (and comments!) and unfettered access to a deranged lunatic's inner musings (like his 140 page manifesto), this entire narrative could just as easily have been that the killer was simply bat shit crazy (zomg he snapped! who knew??), or even just the pathetic/unfortunate victim of bullying. In third world countries or in places embroiled in warfare, 6 deaths isn't even worth mentioning- a normal day's worth of unfortunate bullshit, without any real rhyme or reason.

So no, I don't think the narrative has quite changed in the way you're suggesting.

What is, however, rather obvious is that these types of incidents are occurring with more and more regularity and nobody seems to have a fucking clue about how to collectively fix it.

You fix it by instilling solid core values in children. But society is too soft and the government will never be as effective as a family with disciplined parents/guardians short of enslavement. We gotta fix families and the upbringing of children in this world if you want to combat the corruption that goes on now.

I dunno man. I kind of think crazy, homicidal maniacs will find a way to act out their craziness with or without strong families, governments, churches, etc... What we can try to do is limit the amount of collateral damage done when that balloon pops.

So what gun control not currently codified into law would have prevented this?

I think his motivation of massacre is basically because he is half-Asian. So those blondes don't want to date with him....

He hates Asians, hates his family background. So he killed his three Chinese roommates first. Then he killed two random blondes and another random guy.

Asian is still like Aliens in US.
