^what he said. best stuff they've put out in a while.
8/20/2014 11:50:49 PM
^^is that album out yet?new J. Mascis and new Shovels & Rope streaming on NPR right now.
8/21/2014 8:24:08 AM
^don't think NP is out, but it's streaming.Trioscapes is legit. I may still like their first one slightly better but this one is excellent too. It's a really good new spin on the often tired progressive jazz / jazz fusion sound. Really interesting to see what they do with just sax, bass, and drums and they pull it all off live too.He Is Legend gets better with every listen. Really legit rock record and I loved the way they utilized layered guitars. The leads flowing throughout the background make it an awesome headphone listen.Has anyone checked out the new Kimbra yet? (ffo Bjork. janelle monae, st vincent). About to start that now.
8/21/2014 9:00:20 AM
^^^ best since twin cinema for sure

new Deafheaven track "From the Kettle Onto the Coil" is pretty excellent. Still maintaining their sound from last year's landmark album Sunbather but with a few other elements intermingled nicely.https://soundcloud.com/adultswimsingles/from-the-kettle-to-the-coil/

yep, New Pornos is awesome.
8/26/2014 9:00:32 AM
I've only listened once. It was definitely enjoyable but I didn't get the AOTY vibe personally like some people seemed to. That's only one listen though. I've had too many albums and too little time lately.I had time to go through the new Low Roar album about 3 times now. I have read several glowing 'AOTY' reviews for this as well - mostly comparing it to Sigur Ros, Radiohead, Bon Iver and others which got me excited. My thought after 3 spins: There are parts of this album where all of those comparisons made are spot on. It has some awesome parts, some really beautiful songs, but is just a good album as a whole (definitely worth listening to though). A lot of the songs and even the album as a whole can be summed up as: beautiful but never hits that "a-ha!" moment for me like the comparison artists. Lots of gorgeous tunes that don't build to the same crescendos as radiohead or sigur ros do so masterfully. It will still probably be a good fall/winter album for me this year and could easily be a grower.Kimbra is growing on me as well.[Edited on August 26, 2014 at 9:30 AM. Reason : ]

don't think it's AOTY in my mind, but it's definitely a fun high energy album front to back.
8/26/2014 9:43:40 AM
^ agreethe new cymbals eat guitars is pretty solid. definitely has that j mascis hyper distorted wah tone on a couple tracks. speaking of which is j mascis' new one any good? heard it was but haven't had a chance to check it out
8/27/2014 1:51:04 PM

I'm digging the new Opeth. Just don't go into it expecting Blackwater Park. It's a great prog-rock album. Especially digging Moon Above, Sun Below:

can anyone explain to me where the intense hatred of ed schrader's music beat comes from? is it mostly from shows before devlin was in the band or something? to me they seem pretty rad and inoffensive to me.
8/30/2014 8:37:06 PM
I don't hate it, I just think it's bad. But who cares? Like what you like.
8/30/2014 10:43:41 PM
oh i like it 100%, i'm just truly baffled by/trying to understand the near unanimously negative opinion i've seen on here following his shows, and his spot on the hopscotch lineup reminded me.[Edited on August 31, 2014 at 1:24 AM. Reason : .]
8/31/2014 1:24:02 AM
unanimously negative?Ronny hates Ed because he "can't even play one drum," but that's missing the pointEd is a genius and I love him and his records
8/31/2014 4:10:43 AM
"near"Every time he plays a show in the triangle it seems like there's an avalanche of hate on this board. or maybe it was just the one show. But I agree with you.Anyway whatever nevermind[Edited on August 31, 2014 at 5:55 PM. Reason : .]

i guess i've always been of the opinion that ed is a love/hate guyyou're either all in or it's the worst shit you've ever heardso i figured 50/50 response here, too

Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga's Cheek to Cheek is pretty awesome. We knew she did, but she has a set of pipes. Bang Bang my baby shot me down is so good.

Finally listening to Price's Art Official Age. I really like most of it. Few songs are really out there though...[Edited on October 3, 2014 at 3:45 PM. Reason : http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2014/10/03/prince_rumors_24_of_the_most_outrageous_stories_from_]

not really a Flying Lotus fan but I've had a few friends rec it and I read several glowing reviews.I've listened to it about 4 times today. 1-5, 7, 8, 14 are excellent, but the rest (which a few exceptions) is either filler or something I just cannot get into. Weird dichotomy for me on this record. I'm not entirely disappointed I picked it up because of those 8 songs, they just happen to be really short and almost come off as unfinished Jaga Jazzist songs.
10/9/2014 5:24:42 PM
picked up a few albums by Snarky Puppy on the recommendation of a friend. Really, really good.
10/10/2014 8:02:22 AM
In my frustration with just not finding a way to like the new Aphex Twin, I was at least able to go back and give a listen to Clark's Fantasm Planes and Iradelphic. I think I wrote them off a little too soon. Found a few tracks that I really like, making me look forward to the November release of his self-titled album.
10/14/2014 12:40:02 AM
I just listened to a brand new Sleater-Kinney song, and it was great.Life rules.
10/18/2014 4:14:35 AM
god, someone stop billy corgan from recording new musicthat adore reissue has some cool shit on it though
10/20/2014 10:19:09 PM
I keep meaning to check out the Adore reissue. Is it worth picking up?
10/21/2014 9:53:32 AM
Still can't figure out if the LP reissue is stereo or mono, but I have an original, and the cost is too high to open a new one just to find out.Packaging is the same foil stuff that's on the Gish & SD reissues, but doesn't really work with the Adore artwork, so that's a bummer.I've heard good feedback about the bonus stuff in the CD box, though.
10/21/2014 9:57:17 AM
even though the foil thing doesn't work, i still like the reissue's cover art better than the original'si've only heard a few of the bonus tracks, but this version of "let me give the world to you" is pretty greathttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mljNsPk0ClEi wish billy would spend all of his time on the machina/machina II reissues instead of whatever garbage he's about to churn out with these 2 new SP albums.

anyone listened to the new Cold War Kids album yet? this is probably my favorite release this year. the song "Harold Bloom" sounds a lot like "Breathe" by Pink Floyd - pretty cool take on it if that's what they were going for. A lot of their other stuff on this album reminds me of the good days of The Shins[Edited on October 27, 2014 at 12:28 PM. Reason : image size]
10/27/2014 12:26:47 PM
I also really enjoy the new Cold War Kids album, a lot. I have always loved their singers voicethat Run the Jewels album is good too, especially the song with Zach de la Rocha, which is probably my favorite rap song of the year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvVuEEPM3j0I love the new Lagwagon album too, but thats probably because it reminds me of their albums from the mid 90s
10/28/2014 3:08:56 PM
^oh wow, i wasn't aware that lagwagon put out a new album. for some reason i was thinking the show i went to a few years ago was part of their farewell tour...
