^^^ I love how national disasters have never been so interactive!

Chasers got caught up in the RFD and had some scary moments. They should retire from chasing.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veNJBosc6EA

that's ridiculous. not only do they put themselves in danger, but if they do get caught up and injured, it puts more strain on the already overtaxed local emergency services in the local area who are trying to help other victims who didn't purposefully put themselves in the path of a tornado.in fact, if people want to gather data about tornadoes, they should use unmanned robots controlled from a safe distance.

what are you rolling your eyes about? do you think these people are actually collecting important scientific data about the tornado? Most of them are just in it for the thrill, putting more people at risk.

agreed.

Storm chaser and son killed while chasing after a tornado... http://earthsky.org/earth/lesson-from-fridays-storm-deaths-when-weather-is-bad-stay-home[Edited on June 2, 2013 at 9:23 AM. Reason : fixed?]

^^That's a pretty good article. Here's one that cuts to the chase http://www.wptv.com/dpp/news/national/tim-samaras-paul-samaras-carl-young-three-storm-chaser-among-the-dead-from-oklahoma-tornado

What is interesting to me is that TWISTEX (Samaras team) was never the glitzy close encounter group. They were more interested in the science of it. They were the guys that used standard vehicles with telemetry equipment attached, plus deploying gear in the path of the tornado, to get the most data on the area around the tornado. They were not trying to get in the middle of a tornado or anything like Sean and Reed on Storm Chasers.[Edited on June 2, 2013 at 11:49 AM. Reason : ]

Sounds like the tornado turned sharply and unexpectedly trapping them and the weather channel. Scary

they should make a movie about bank robbers who, in their spare time, are surfers storm chasers

Wow... Very surprised and saddened to hear the news about Tim Samaras and his son. As someone who has seen every episode of storm chasers this comes as a shock. He was always the calm and cautious one trying his best to make the smart and safe call with his team. He left the crazy chases to Reed and Sean. Obviously goes to show you that even experts make mistakes and storms are always unpredictable. Guess it was only a matter of time till one of them was seriously hurt or killed I just always assumed it would be one of the younger more aggressive guys.

Yea during the shows run, Reed tried to always out do Sean, and everybody else. He copied the TIV idea, which really was Sean's baby. I don't think the Dominator could have survived that twister that Sean rode out last Sunday. But I really figured the bravado of Reed trying to be number one at everything would get him killed a lot sooner than the TWISTEX team. They seemed to before about the science of it and not in it for the media spotlight.

I agree. There were lots of episodes where Tim's crew decided to call off the chase and not risk it. Meanwhile, Reed and Sean were always the ones going real close and risking it.A news story I read earlier said that the tornado took a sharp turn to the north and that's what did them in.If I was doing any hardcore chasing like that, I would definitely spend the money to get my vehicle like Reed and Sean's.

Here's some more decent reading...http://earthsky.org/earth/lesson-from-fridays-storm-deaths-when-weather-is-bad-stay-homeAnd the Dominator

I understand that Tim & Co. were probably where they were to deploy whatever sensors they were using for research, but I'll be damned if I position myself north or NE of a tornadic supercell. Everytime I've chased I made it a point to stay well south and out of the path of the storm.

So did Reed chase this storm or was he too busy filming commercials?

what a monstrosity
6/4/2013 2:12:16 PM
might be a dumb question, but is the width measured by the area that was damaged, or is it the actual width of where the storm touched the ground?
6/4/2013 2:16:21 PM
i think they go by damage path but on one like that they are probably one and the same
