This might be enough to convince State fans not to get the MotoX.[Edited on November 14, 2013 at 8:06 AM. Reason : jpg]

I'm holding off until next month, hoping to hear some good things about it before I grab one.
11/14/2013 10:21:05 AM
Damn. If I buy this, it would take me 20 months to break even on my defy.... but the defy seems like a piece of shit in comparison. https://republicwireless.com/phones/defy-xt
11/14/2013 10:24:56 AM
Think I'll probably wait til May to see how things are when Google pulls the plug on my current method of using GrooveIP and Wifi for most of my calls. Only pay about $16.25/mo now so it'd take 1-2yrs to break even even after selling my GS3 and using the RW $10 plan. Maybe they'll have a middle tier plan by then or I'll just quit trying to be cheap.

So temping to pull the trigger on the X, but i'm going to wait until it goes on sale in the NCSU Bookstore (Republic confirmed via twitter it will be sometime this month). I'll save $10 on shipping, and if you buy it at the bookstore they give you a Moto Portable Charger for free ($30 value according to Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-P4000-Universal-Portable-Power/dp/B00CF4Z6UI/ref=sr_1_2?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1384726683&sr=1-2&keywords=motorola+portable+charger). Also, If I dont like it, I can return it to the bookstore. Its the only place you can buy it in person.I called a lady I know at the bookstore, and she said they are still waiting to hear back exactly when they are going to start selling it, although she seemed to think it was pretty soon. She is gonna email as soon as she knows something. I'll keep everyone posted if they are interested!
11/17/2013 5:21:35 PM
do you have to be a current student to buy at the bookstore?
11/18/2013 11:05:17 AM
That wouldn't make a lot of sense, would it? I figured they sold a lot of stuff to parents, alumni, etc.Anyway, I think I've decided to bite the bullet on the X. My only concerns now are that the company will go out business in the next 2 years or raise their prices significantly.
11/18/2013 11:26:11 AM
it would if they were offering student discounted prices on things like the Moto X... when i was a student they sold software that you needed a student ID to buy because it was specially priced.
11/18/2013 12:03:59 PM
^Nope, anyone can go in and buy it.Basically here's how it works (atleast when I bought the Defy a couple of months ago). They have a little kiosk set up with a display phone and a computer with the Republic website on it. You go through checkout on the computer just as you normally would online, but at the final screen they scan a bar-code on the phone box into the promo code box which takes the cost of the phone off (you just pay the 1st months service, which can be free if you put in the code MONEYMUSTACHE19). Then you walk over to the checkout desk, where they give you the free gift and pay for the actual phone.
11/18/2013 2:53:26 PM
i wonder if it's worth returning the one i ordered directly from republic, eating the $10 initial shipping, and getting the phone from the bookstore...i'd pay $10 for the power pack

11/18/2013 3:48:24 PM
humm...I guess that was only something they were doing for the Defy? I was actually in the bookstore today, and they still had a ton of defys, as well as a bunch of the little gift bags with the power pack in it. The lady there did tell me when I bought the Defy that if I returned it (for a full refund) within the 30 days, I could keep the powerpack thing.
11/18/2013 5:58:01 PM
oh, well, never mind, then
11/19/2013 10:48:59 AM
its so temping to guy ahead and order mine from the website, but i'd rather wait and save the 10 bucks on shipping. RW has confirmed that they will start selling it in the bookstore this month, so I probably wouldnt get it much faster than I would by waiting. I've been bugging them on twitter to tell me when it'll be available
11/19/2013 11:17:32 AM
Phone just got here so doesn't look like I'm going to be very productive for the rest of the day. It's definitely light years ahead of the Defy XT and comparable to the GS3 I've been using. Will have to wait til a bit later to see if the call quality is any better than before.
11/20/2013 3:32:27 PM
when did you order?I'm getting impatient waiting on the bookstore to get them in stock.
11/20/2013 4:03:18 PM
Thursday around 12:30.
11/20/2013 4:10:02 PM
mine's on the fedex truck to be delivered today
11/21/2013 7:09:22 AM
The power pack thing makes a lot more sense for the Defy anyway, because the battery life on it sucks. I'm hoping the MotoX has a significantly better battery.
11/21/2013 10:00:23 AM
Idle battery life seems to be about the same as my GS3 assuming I have it in airplane mode with wifi enabled. Sprint's service is crap in my office and was making it drain like crazy. As for call quality, I could barely tell I was on a wifi call.
11/21/2013 12:10:48 PM
Finally got around to ordering mine. Seems to be pretty quick turnaround.11/22- Ordered11/24- Card charged11/25- Shipped11/26- Estimated arrivalFor those that have received theirs, how do you like it? Any problems?
11/26/2013 9:41:20 AM
just rooted my wife's moto x using the guide found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2509676just in case anyone else was curious about it...i did it because my wife asked why there were ads in her apps, since i had installed adaway on her defy i likely won't do anything else, at least for a while...unrooting should be easy enough if i need to do it
11/26/2013 10:34:11 AM
I am really thinking about switching; what are the major cons (if any) for using this carrier?
11/29/2013 8:24:00 PM
Sprint sucks. When on the road traveling, I get spotty reception whereas verizon was pretty awesome. However, inside buildings where wifi is available, connection is superior to even verizon's 4G LTE. No contract is awesome, and the ability to switch plans in the middle of the month to accomodate your cellular use/demand is an awesome perk. I have the defy with the 3G unlimited plan. I'd love to get the moto x but i'm holding off for a bit.[Edited on November 29, 2013 at 8:34 PM. Reason : .]
11/29/2013 8:33:09 PM
My moto X arrived Wednesday, so I got to play with it over the past few days. So far i'm extremely impressed. In Raleigh, the 4g seems to be pretty quick. Back home in the country it was lacking, but my dad has wifi so no biggie there. Handoff to wifi was great (it happened twice and I didnt even realize it).As far as the phone goes I love it. No complaints whatsoever
11/29/2013 8:56:49 PM
^^ I have Sprint now, and I don't have any complaints in terms of cellular connection. The data speeds could be better but I am on wifi 80% of the time with my phone anyways. If I could find someone to buy my Galaxy Note 3 I would switch to the service right now.
11/30/2013 12:09:22 AM
you could probably sell it on ebay or craigslist for what you paid for it. People will pay that for a non-contract smart phone.Republic is great, no complaints so far
11/30/2013 4:40:21 PM
Can you do MMS on this service?
12/3/2013 12:26:12 PM
^ There seem to be some glitches here and there but it should work for the most part assuming you use the native messaging app and not hangouts. On a coverage related note, the RW Moto X seems to have better signal than my Verizon GS3 at my parents who live in the middle of nowhere. It's roaming but at least I can actually make a call without it dropping or not dialing at all. Samsung radios are generally crap so that probably has a lot to do with it though. No complaints so far but still haven't decided if I'm keeping the Moto X. Spent $75 on a yearly plan for my GS3 on Selectel in August and still have about 90% of the minutes/texts left since I've been using GrooveIP and Google Voice. Might return it and re-evaluate things in May when Google pulls the plug on the third party voip apps and I'm sure the Moto X will be even cheaper by then with other options available. Then again, I may just see if I can get $texas for the GS3 in the next 14 days before my 30 days are over. Anyone want to buy a 32GB Verizon GS3 with about 1700min and 1500 texts?
12/3/2013 2:36:56 PM
^The Defy did not have access to MMS. However the Moto X does have MMS.https://community.republicwireless.com/docs/DOC-1653#Update_Will_MMS_sending_photos_and_group_texts_be_available_on_the_Moto_XUpdate! Will MMS (sending photos and group texts) be available on the Moto X?For those unfamiliar with the acronym “MMS”—MMS is Multimedia Messaging Service, and refers to sending and receiving things like pictures and videos, as well as group texts. Sending and receiving MMS between providers involves lots of effort on both sides of the equation, so we are very excited that we now have this functionality with all the major carriers you see listed below and many more for a total of 70+ other national and regional carriers.
12/3/2013 3:30:27 PM
^^ So if I wanted to test out the service, would I have to fully pay for a phone?Anyone interested in a Sprint Galaxy Note 3 with a Spigen Neo Hybrid Case?
12/3/2013 6:59:42 PM
yeah, you pay for whatever the device costs+shipping+tax and the first month's service. If you cancel, everything gets refunded except the $10 for shipping.
12/3/2013 7:28:41 PM
Has anyone here gotten a refund yet?
12/3/2013 7:55:59 PM
I tried out the Defy back in July and returned it. Only took 5 days from the time I sent the phone back until I received a refund.
12/3/2013 8:17:18 PM
So what's the advantage of this service over StraightTalk's AT&T service? $20 a month less for far less mobile data?
12/3/2013 8:24:05 PM
I like the idea of the $10 package. Fuck mobile data I'll just roll up in Starbuck or somewhere and use wifi if I need it that bad.
12/3/2013 8:35:11 PM
^And if you really need cell data, just upgrade your plan on the spot.
12/3/2013 9:14:48 PM
Yeah I read that you can do that twice a month! Man, this almost sounds too good to be true.
12/3/2013 9:19:21 PM
Any word on the book store discount?
12/4/2013 2:40:04 AM
I havent heard anything about selling it at the bookstore. For the Defy they didnt give a discount, you just saved on shipping and they gave you a portable charger for free (which I hear they arent gonna do for the X Phone). I initally was holding out to buy it at the bookstore. They said that it would be by the end of November, but apparently it was delayed. I work on campus so i'll swing by the bookstore and see if they have started selling it yet.
12/4/2013 9:02:53 AM
If you could keep me posted, that'd be great! It'd save me a trip, though I could just call them... lol.
12/4/2013 8:03:33 PM
I think I might go ahead and order one, though I would rather buy it from the bookstore to save on the shipping like everybody else
12/5/2013 1:11:43 AM
I swung by the bookstore yesterday on my lunch, still no X phone. They have plenty of Defys though
12/5/2013 8:22:14 AM
Does anyone know when they will have them in the bookstore?
12/5/2013 10:35:26 AM
On the website it says that they ship in 1-2 weeks is this right, or does it really means it can ship in UP to 1-2 weeks away? For anyone who ordered what was experience? And how do you guys feel about the phone being locked to RW? Do you see them folding within the next 2-3 years?[Edited on December 5, 2013 at 11:31 AM. Reason : /]
12/5/2013 11:23:29 AM
Pulled the trigger today ... the more I thought about it the more I realized that I would really save some serious cash if this $10 plan works out for me.
