5-0 generally suck horsecock but Restricted seems OK

Jethroe- From what I can tell with the use of a directional signal that's a legal left turn. It's an unprotected median in which the double yellows are just for passing. That would be the same as if it were just a normal straight double yellowed divider.

Do you or does anyone else on the force ask people about insurance when they pull someone over?Is it possible to get cited for DDing for a friend who obviously doesn't have you on their policy? I always wonder about that. As I understand it, the officer has the legal right to ask for 3 things, which are license, registration, and proof of insurance.

Know any officers that are a little bit TOO into the paramilitary thing? You know what I mean....the ones that want their special gun instead of the standard issue, and who voluntarily wear the bullet proof vests for crossing gaurd duty, and who visit the army surplus store weekly to get the latest combat knife/pepper spray/flashlight contraption ?
6/13/2012 11:31:24 AM
Let me get your opinion on the following scenario:Let's say there's a 2 lane road (1 lane each direction) and the car ahead of you is stopped, waiting to make a left turn. There is a wide shoulder on the side of the road. Is it legal to pass the car ahead of you using the shoulder on the right? And if not what would the citation be and how likely would you be to issue a ticket for that infraction?
6/13/2012 11:40:12 AM
Can you get pulled for cruising in the left lane on the interstate, when you're not passing someone in the right? I was taught in driver's ed that the left lane is for passing only, and after you pass, you merge back into the right lane. There are signs on the highway that say "slower traffic keep right". Does that mean that as long as you're doing the speed limit, you can stay in the left, and cars going slower than the speed limit have to stay to the right.I hate those people who cruise in the left lane, especially the ones that get beside a car and go the same speed limit for miles, not allowing anyone to pass.
6/13/2012 11:46:17 AM
^continuing with that idea, is passing on the right illegal in NC?

Twice in my life i've gotten the blue lights at night on a 2-lane road that didn't have a marked shoulder and the actual shoulder was uneven, or a straight up ditch. Both times I put on my flashers and pulled over ASAP (either into the first parking lot or there was a shoulder - marked or level terrain, or in a parking lot). Both times that was at least 1/4 mile or so down the road, probably a little over 1/2 mile on one occasion . Both times the respective officer seemed upset that I didn't pull over immediately --- i understand that it makes them wonder, but I'm not risking pulling my car over into a ditch and causing damage. What's the best course of action here? Should you just stop in the road?

Years ago, I was on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill on halloween night, with some friends. Moving through the crowded street, there was a passed-out-drunk guy with a police officer standing over him (presumably to keep him from being trampled by the crowd). I had my camera with me, so I raised it to take a picture. The police officer then put his hand on my arm, and forced my camera down while saying "YOU DON'T NEED TO TAKE A PICTURE OF THAT!". I just let it go and walked on, seeing how I was already not so sober, and figured challenging the officer would probably get me thrown in jail for the night.Still, years later, I didn't appreciate being touched...or being told I couldn't take a picture when I felt I was legally able to do so.What's your opinion on all of this?

Yeah, crowded street for sure. So crowded in fact that there were probably about 15 other people in his bubble - by nature of the fact that it's a shoulder to shoulder crowd. He kind of reached past people to get to me.
6/13/2012 1:56:05 PM
Yeah not safe for anyone in that position, especially him since he was trying to protect the passed out drunk guy... Needless you shouldn't have been any concern of his, your hands were full of camera, not a weapon...Moral of story, you went to chapel hill :-p don't do it again.

what real power does ALE have? now that i'm 21 i would like to fuck with them to the extent that the law allows me to. (also, are they all just disgrunteled losers who couldnt make it in the police? whats their beef)
6/13/2012 2:44:40 PM
nothing. don't fuck with the police. they can fuck you harder than you can fuck them. and unfortunately, most of our society values the words and actions of cops over the general public, even when overwhelming evidence supports the person and not the cop.
6/13/2012 3:13:47 PM
^ that.
6/13/2012 3:22:54 PM
^^ ultimately they are a professional witness where you are just a witness so... officer's view of things counts significantly more then yours. so in a he-said she-said... the LEO ALWAYS wins.[Edited on June 13, 2012 at 3:29 PM. Reason : .]

6/13/2012 3:29:17 PM
^^yes, but "even when overwhelming evidence supports the person and not the cop." is a major problem.^sounds familiar. They can also arm themselves with AR and similar rifles and lose them without penalty. Must have some say somewhere. [Edited on June 13, 2012 at 3:29 PM. Reason : .]

ALE is one of the few agencies that have state wide jurisdiction over any crimes... Yes they have more authority than most. They wouldn't be who I would mess around with if I had to choose an agency..
6/13/2012 5:35:24 PM
I too am a cop
6/13/2012 5:58:58 PM
ALE is the one agency that should be disbanded immediately, if not sooner.they add nothing useful, and waste our taxpayer dollars.I'd be fine if we'd fire 'em all and give all the other cops raises.
6/13/2012 6:08:02 PM
I dont work for ALE, but they do a lot more stuff than just narc on kids under 21. Just FYI
6/13/2012 6:18:19 PM
Yeah, like bust up the moonshine still I don't have back in the woods on the side of a mountain.
6/13/2012 6:34:46 PM
^So? Don't we have the SBI? ATF? eleventy-billion other law enforcement agencies?
6/13/2012 6:35:45 PM
besides alcohol...ALE does tobacco, drug, and gambling enforcement right?

If you get pulled for a DWI and refuse to blow, can they really take your blood involuntarily or is this just a threat? If you say "I think" in front of an insult, such as "I think that you are a pig" does it make it legal since it's an opinion? How does the police radar system work? Is it like a map that shows the relative speeds of all the cars around you? If you see somebody with a radar detector, are you more likely to pull them than a car without one? On court days I see cops bring their laptops - are they looking at each respective case as it comes up, or just dicking around on the internets to kill time? I have a German Shepherd Dog and if I were pulled over while he was in the car, he would undoubtedly growl at the officer - is this legal grounds to shoot him? (I actually used to have a muzzle in the car in fear of this)If I'm parked on Hillsborough street, say in front of DH Hill on the library side of the street, and when I get in my car and leave, I whip a U-turn from the parking spot to go in the other direction, is this legal? (I doubt it, but thought I'd ask)Do you extend "professional courtesy" to sons/daughter of cops? I have a friend whose dad is a Sheriff and he's been pulled 2-3 times drunk and speeding and was let off each time. One time, he blew a .16 and they told him to call a friend - this was on Boylan.

*As far as the ALE - I think they are necessary because of they way NC is set up. Sure, make ABC private, etc, but that isn't going to happen. Local agencies are stretched pretty thin and don't have the manpower to regulate ABC permit holders (not just enforcement, but a ton of it is administrative side - conducting/approving background of permit holders, violations, etc). Same goes for lottery and tobacco (remember when Hezbollah was smuggling cigarettes? Goes beyond just status offenses). Don't forget they also regulate boxing and MMA stuff. Really comes down to manpower to do things. Could they be merged w/ the SBI? Sure, but this is state of tradition(s) and that would change the mission of the SBI.
6/13/2012 7:42:18 PM
pretty sure radar detectors are legal in North Carolina, but that the laws vary from state-to-state, ie they're illegal in Virginia
6/13/2012 7:45:28 PM
^^^wat? radar detectors are legal in NC. Not in VA though.[Edited on June 13, 2012 at 7:46 PM. Reason : ^^^]
6/13/2012 7:45:53 PM
^yeah i worded that wrong...i meant to say that i thought they were legal to have in NC, not illegal. but thanks for the answers.
6/13/2012 7:47:27 PM
ALE also enforces the controlled substance act laws, ie chapter 90 laws in the NC state general statutes. So they are also kind of a vice unit as well. Restricted is right though, no other agency really wants to mess with inspecting, investigating and issuing ABC permits. on a side note, "chapter 90" is cop code for drugs
6/13/2012 8:15:46 PM
This thread was really a ploy to get the police on TWW to expose themselves
6/13/2012 8:17:30 PM
and lately, ALE has been getting a lot of work rounding up fugitives/absconders.

If you see someone drop a cigarette butt out the car window what do you do?This really annoys me and I have yelled out the window at people for this. One actually got out and picked it up.
6/13/2012 9:17:27 PM
ALE kicked in a friend of mine's door one time. didnt find shit, and had the wrong names and address on the warrant. those motherfuckers couldnt pour piss out of a boot with the instructions written on the heel.on the other hand Restricted and ultraspank, yall seem pretty chill and level headed. more power to ya, and stay safe.
