We saw it over the weekend and really enjoyed it. Wife liked it and hasn't seen any of the original series. I liked and have seen all the series and movies (huge nerd)The transwarp thing, Section 31 confiscated Scotty's research and that's how Khan got a hold of it. The differences in the whole prime universe are interesting and continue to be so. Khan prime was found on a ship with 72 other folks. Cared about his people and accepted Kirk's terms to rebuild on a new planet. The planet suffers a disaster resulting int he death of many of his people so Khan goes on the warpath seeking revenge.New Khan sorta follows the same path, but with Marcus as his focus. With Khan refrozen at the end you wonder if he'll thaw out and seek vengeance against Kirk this time. I missed the dramatics of the prime Khan, but enjoyed the ruthlessness of this Khan. I liked the different changes with Kirk dying versus Spock. It was nice to see Carol there. I wonder what will happen to cause their breakup between this movie and the next. Sulu taking the captain's chair was pretty cool. Prime's Spock anger towards Khan was nice. Nice shout-out to Harry Mudd. McCoy "operating" on the torpedo as he did in Wrath of Khan. Telling Chekov to wear a red shirt...lol.. That's all I can remember off the top of my head. I didn't see R2D2 though. Good movie, will have to buy

I thought this was a good movie but not a good Star Trek.Khan felt like he had no plan.Him going to Kronos served no purpose except for the writers to get the Enterprise where they wanted it. And Kirk dying had no bearing on the story. The death of Spock served as a wonderful end to the series(which is what it was written to be) however Kirk's death here had no impact because you knew they would bring him back with Khan's blood, they hit you in the face with it like 20 minutes before hand.Overall I felt it would have been better if it had tried to do its own thing rather than loosely retelling Wrath of Khan. Since JJ can't as easily remake The Search for Spock I imagine the next movie will contain whales.

^ and the timing is completely off for the whale probe.I'm hoping it's about a probe that was sent from Earth's past but gets reprogrammed and upgraded by a mysterious alien civilization and as a result has the power to destroy planetary systems at will. AND THAT PROBE HAS SET A COURSE FOR EARTH![Edited on May 30, 2013 at 5:28 PM. Reason : http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Nomad]

Whales would require at least a 20 year time skip. I'd expest more of an undiscovered country Klingon centric movie
5/30/2013 5:12:57 PM
Undiscovered Country worked so well because the Klingons 'respected' Kirk in that timeline. Why would they give two shits about him now
5/30/2013 6:43:07 PM
They probably won't just like Khan didn't in this one. But it would be hard to believe the next film ignores the Klingons especially after the human's incursion on Qo'noS. They probably figured out it was Starfleet and are going to wage war as a matter of honor. It may be the first film in the new franchise that doesn't feature a big bad.

I'm probably seeing this tonight... trying to keep an open mind but I've been spoiled to a lot of the movie. A professor I'm friends with, who is also a sci-fi author, tore this movie apart, but that's kind of expected. Will try and put it out of mind.

This movie doesn't have nearly the same kind of replay value as the one before it. (Though I'd still watch it over movies 1 and 5 anyday)

Just got back from the theater watching the dvd... I always wait to buy, it's cheaper than the theater. It was a good movie but I couldn't shake thinking about several nits throughout. I'll have to rewatch, since the first viewing had to be broken up across several days.I agree that old Spock was shoehorned into the movie. They call him in desperation and he doesn't give them any information that was actually useful. You know Khan? Yeah, that dude sucked. Really hard to take down, that one. Ok, thanks. Yeah, that scene was necessary. I'm guessing Leonard Nimoy was contracted to be in two films or something. Overall not a huge distraction but it was a bit out of place. The only accent related head scratcher I was left with was why Robocop's daughter had a British accent. I explained it away by telling myself that Robocop sent her away to the fanciest schools in London, maybe even section 31, when she was 4 years old. Or maybe Robocop lived in London... but I thought he lived in SF. Not sure. Not a big deal though.Agreed that they need to nail down the rules surrounding transporting. They were plucking people that were in free fall out of a debris field while a planet was exploding in the first movie... yet a space bus is throwing them off in this one.

agreed.

^^ On your last point, yeah. I didn't get that "awesome callback!" emotion.I think it's because Kahn didn't actually cause Kirk to die. He didn't actually do anything to cause that moment to happen, Kirk went in of his own volition. Kahn wasn't in the scene. In II, if memory serves, he abandons them on the new planet or something like that, and basically tells them FU over the intercom before going dark. Then the scream, closing out the interaction with the villain.

Whole movie was stupid as fuck. Lame writingEnough of old Spock already! Can somebody come up with a screenplay that doesn't include wrecking the enterprise? It was cool the first couple of times, but jesus, it seems like every fucking movie. Also big ass starships can't land, or go underwater.

Not in DS9 or TNG.

The Defiant can land. Voyager can land.I am fairly certain that STNG took the Enterprise under water. I believe ST: Enterprise did the same. I am trying to look up the episodes.
3/21/2014 10:00:31 AM
The Defiant wasn't a "big ass starship" also it never landed in the series. Same with TNG[Edited on March 21, 2014 at 11:30 AM. Reason : a]

I don't recall any underwater excursions on the series for any large starship. Tom Paris did take the Delta Flyer into an ocean world once, but that was essentially a shuttlecraft.
3/21/2014 11:36:43 AM
If you Google the new Star Trek movie and references to the Enterprise going under water you'll get all these scientists explaining why it wouldn't be able to go under water because of how many atmosphere's it would be holding back pressure wise. You'd think the shields would be able to handle that...
3/21/2014 11:54:39 AM
Did the NX-01 go underwater at some point? I remember something like that.
3/21/2014 11:54:50 AM
Scientists accept "inertial dampeners" preventing the crew from being splattered due to the super hyper rapid acceleration/deceleration of the ships, but not going underwater? And while I'm on the topic of "inertial dampeners" why is it whenever they get hit by a torpedo or something everyone gets rocked around inside the ship if their inertial dampeners are active. The sheer amount of newtons they have to nullify when going from 0 to warp speed completely dwarfs any amount of kinetic energy a hit from a weapon could do.[Edited on March 21, 2014 at 12:09 PM. Abrams is lazy and just wanted impressive visuals. The magic blood, super teleporter, rehashing tWoK, etc is all lazy writingAbrams doesn't understand Trek and never will/nerdrant
3/21/2014 12:06:30 PM
^^ maybe inertial dampeners are only activated when engaging warp. if you think about it, you'd probably want to know if you were being fired on by being knocked around the ship. otherwise, unless you were on the bridge you'd just be going about your business oblivious until the red alert was sounded.

I never said Voyager didn't land. The show was also helmed by Braga and Brannon who were terrible for the franchise. The Bird of Prey crashed into San Fran bay and promptly sank.
3/21/2014 1:56:12 PM
Because of the probe right?I thought they took it under water at some point in the movie before that.
3/21/2014 2:03:54 PM
They crashed the bitch, not "went underwater".
