the owner wants the dog back... the sheriff's office is currently deciding whether or not to pursue animal cruelty charges against the guy for bringing a dog along on a hike where dogs clearly do not belong.

and the couple that discovered the dog and initiated the rescue effort wants to adopt her.

The Shaffers rescued a family of five, including three children under the age of 6, from the roof of their trailer home just minutes before water overtopped it. The rescue was the older Shaffer's most memorable of the day. "They were all on there, screaming their lungs out," he said. The rapid rate at which water gushed over the 18-mile levee, into their town was "unexpected," the younger Shaffer said. As of this morning, their home had 12 feet of water in it and they had to stash their belongings in the attic, which was then flooded. Water rose six inches every four minutes, the older Shaffer said. "There were a lot of houses we saw that were in spots that we know where they're supposed to be and they were maybe a half a mile down the road, floating down the highway," the older Shaffer said. The Shaffers fought through debris, rough water, wind and downed power lines to save their stranded friends. The older Shaffer insisted they are not heroes and they were never afraid. "I guess we were just going on adrenaline," the younger Shaffer said. "

he was probably speeding and driving like a moron, and he gets his wife killed and perhaps his child?

its not even necessary to drive like that, i feel like id drive more slowly and carefully with my wife in labor next to me

im not trying to be insensitive but i never in my life understood why people feel like they can drive wrecklessly because someone is giving birth.

Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a large non-stick pan. Once hot, add the bacon lardons and fry for 1-2 minutes. Add the reindeer chunks, season with salt and pepper and allow to colour. 2. Stir in the turnip, red onion, garlic and carrot and continue to heat for 4-5 minutes to lightly colour the vegetables, then stir in the cloudberries and blueberries. 3. Add the red wine vinegar to the pan and swirl to deglaze. Pour in the red wine, bring to the boil and allow to reduce for approximately 8-10 minutes or until syrupy. 4. Add a handful of snow (or half a cup of water), bring back to the boil and then continue to simmer for a further 8-10 minutes until thickened. 5. Grate in the dark chocolate, heat for a further minute until thickened and nicely glazed. Correct the seasoning accordingly and serve at once. "

To connect remotely to the company computer system, staffers needed a personal identification number, which changed at regular intervals. Employees were issued security tokens, small devices that updated them with the latest generated PIN. Last spring, the company grew concerned about computer security breaches and asked its IT department to inspect more closely its remote-access logs, looking for unusual patterns of activity. To their surprise, they saw that someone connected into their network every day from Shenyang, a city in the historical Manchurian north of China, near the Korean peninsula. More interestingly, the Chinese intruder was logged in using Bob’s PIN and credentials, “yet the employee is right there, sitting at his desk, staring into his monitor,” Mr. Valentine wrote. “Based on what information they had obtained, the company initially suspected some kind of unknown malware that was able [to] route traffic from a trusted internal connection to China, and then back. This was the only way they could intellectually resolve the authentication issue. What other explanation could there be?” Verizon investigators were contacted. They inspected Bob’s workstation, trying to find whether he had unintentionally downloaded some Chinese computer malware. Instead, the cyber-sleuths discovered hundreds of invoices from a software developer in Shenyang. The investigation revealed that Bob had outsourced his job. To get around the changing PINs, he couriered his security tokens to the Shenyang subcontractor. Looking at his web browsing history, investigators found that Bob spent his workday checking sites such as Reddit, Ebay, Facebook and LinkedIn and watching cat videos. Then he would type an e-mail at the end of the day to update management about his “work” and left at 5 p.m. The Chinese contractor Bob picked did an excellent job. “His code was clean, well-written, and submitted in a timely fashion,” Mr. Valentine noted. “Quarter after quarter, his performance review noted him as the best developer in the building.”"

However, when Savannah woke up and White looked in her mouth, she saw that every single tooth, top and bottom, was capped with stainless-steel crowns. So, we consulted Dr. Richard Chaet, who has been in dentistry for more than 30 years. Chaet is the former president of the Arizona Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and was responsible for writing guidelines for pediatric dentists across the nation. He had never met Savannah, but agreed to look at some photographs we provided. "I did say 'wow' because she did have a lot of silver caps on her teeth," Chaet said. Chaet claimed that although it looks bizarre, all of those caps were necessary to fill Savannah's cavities and to save other teeth that were probably deteriorating. "This is a child who is obviously very high risk for decay," Chaet said. He went on to say that some dentists probably would have gone a step further by putting on white veneers to cover a lot of those silver caps even if the patient couldn't afford it. Chaet said a lot of dentists would have done it free of charge because children are sensitive about how they feel and look. And that's exactly what happened to Savannah. Another dentist who actually saw Savannah's teeth offered to put on those veneers free of charge. White said her daughter looks a lot better, but said it's been a learning process. "I just want people to be aware of what happened and what's going on out there," White said. Chaet said two things apparently happened here. First, he said there needed to be better communication between the dentist and White. Chaet said the dentist might have done a better job at explaining the situation and White could have asked more questions. Chaet said parents should always ask several questions before any procedure is performed to make sure they fully understand. Chaet also said this is a good reminder to take your child to the dentist as early as their first or second birthday so proper dental care can begin. Appointments early in a child's life not only benefits kids, but it allows dentists time to discuss sugary drinks like juices that parents frequently put in bottles and use over time. Good oral hygeine and education, he said, will prevent decay and keep stainless-steel caps from having to be used."

But over the weekend, obituaries appeared about Ruth Ann Steinhagen, 83, who "disappeared into near obscurity" as the Chicago Tribune says and died last Dec. 29 with little notice. It wasn't until the Tribune was searching records for another story that it discovered the one-time "femme fatale" had died. The Associated Press recaps Steinhagen's real-life crime, which happend when she was 19, this way: "The story began with what appeared to be just another young woman's crush on Eddie Waitkus, the Chicago Cubs' handsome first baseman. So complete was this crush that the teenager set a place for Waitkus, whom she'd never met, at the family dinner table. She turned her bedroom into a shrine to him, and put his photo under her pillow. "After the 1948 season, Waitkus was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies — a fateful turn. "When he went to the Phillies, that's when she decided to kill him," [author John] Theodore said in an interview. "Steinhagen had her chance the next season, when the Phillies came to Chicago to play the Cubs at Wrigley Field. She checked into a room at the Edgewater Beach Hotel where he was staying and invited him to her room. " 'We're not acquainted, but I have something of importance to speak to you about,' she wrote in a note to him after a game at Wrigley on June 14, 1949. "It worked. Waitkus arrived at her room. After he sat down, Steinhagen walked to a closet, said, 'I have a surprise for you,' then turned with the rifle she had hidden there and shot him in the chest." Waitkus — like Redford's character — survived. He would go on to play again the next season and and all or part of five more seasons after that. He died in 1972. Steinhagen was judged to be insane and spent nearly three years in a state hospital where she "underwent electroconvulsive therapy to alter the chemical balance in her brain, as well as hydrotherapy and occupational therapy," the Tribune writes. Eventually considered to be cured, she was released and never tried for the shooting. Steinhagen settled in with her parents and a sister on Chicago's Northwest side. Over the years, the parents and sister died. It isn't known for sure if Steinhagen held any type of job. She never spoke publicly about the shooting, according to the Tribune. According to the newspaper, "she died Dec. 29 at Swedish Covenant Hospital of a subdural hematoma caused by an accidental fall in her longtime home, a Cook County medical examiner spokeswoman said." In the movie, the femme fatale was played by actress Barbara Hershey and her character commits suicide after shooting Redford's character, Roy Hobbs. The year isn't 1949 in the reel version of the story — it's the 1930s. And Hobbs isn't an established major leaguer like Waitkus when he's shot. He's a young phenom — "the natural" — who has his best years robbed from him, but returns 15 years later to lead the "New York Knights" to the top of the standings. There's much more to the plot, of course: A bat with a lightning bolt; and old love who comes back into Hobbs' life; a son he never knew about; an evil team owner. The climax comes when Hobbs hits a long home run into the stadium lights (supposedly in New York City but actually filmed at Buffalo's since-demolished War Memorial Stadium). With lights exploding, he rounds the bases."
