The memorial tombs are basically two big holes deep into the ground right? I think the power from there can reach out to the other end of the globe. The other end of the globe at the same place is city Beijing in China. So I suspect people in NYC want to seek strength, or help from Beijing to reconstruct the city after 2001.
Sometimes during the trip, I feel that NYC is still somehow under the shadow of 911 attack. When walking into the elevators in the hotels, you can find worrier or fear on people's faces.

-Those tombs are the footprints of the Twin Towers. They're not tombs, symbolic or otherwise.

Going to NYC on Wednesday & staying till Saturday. Wife had an impromptu conference to go to, and is dragging me along. I've been to the area once before, but only drove in/out for the day. I did the Times Square stuff then, so I'm ok with not hanging out too long in that area. Spent some time in Battery Park, saw Ground Zero (circa 2006), and went to a concert at Radio City Music Hall.

Flying in via JFK and Staying at the Doubletree in Midtown. Wife will be at her conference 8-5pm on Thurs & Fri, so I plan to wander around to as many places as I can. Weather looks shitty late Thursday evening & Friday, so I may stick to indoor activities during that time.

We fly in Wednesday afternoon by about 3, so I'm hoping we can get from JFK to the hotel, check in, and maybe hit up one of the boat rides that evening (looking at a 7pm ride). I dunno when we plan to eat dinner, but it may be quick/cheap pizza or some other restaurant that might be open late.

For Thursday, I didn't have a set plan. Saw the Big 10 tourney is going on, so I thought about scoring a cheap ticket for that. I would like to check out Central Park, so I might consider going there in the morning. After that, I may wander around looking for a spot to eat (wife has her lunch paid for at the conference). That evening, I was hoping to watch the State game, so will likely go to Brother Jimmys for that.

Friday, the weather looks crappy, so I may stick to a few museums, 9/11 and whatever else. Maybe check out McSorley's, Hook & Ladder 8 (because Ghostbusters), and the High Line when I'm down there. Have no clue about what to do for dinner.

Saturday, our flight leaves at 130 or so, so it'd be nice to find a cool breakfast spot before we head out.

Feel free to make any other suggestions based on that info.

I really like McSoreley's (get the horseradish dip and crackers). High Line is amazing and 100% worth it. Try to go at sunset or at night before it closes.

Mom's in Astoria (Broadway stop on the N/Q/R line) has outstanding brunch. Should be about 15 minutes from midtown on the train and then a short walk.

If you're in midtown and want a good, cheap bite to eat check out The Halal Guys food truck on Avenue of the Americas. It's insane how much lamb you get on the platter/gyro. People will line up around the block for it for lunch but the line moves super quickly. Go a little before or after the lunch rush and you'll get in and out quick.

Raclette NYC is interesting if you've never had that (they heat a wheel of cheese and scrape it off onto a plate of potatoes/meats/veggies). Not too pricey and easy to get reservations (if you need them at all).

I love the NYU area and Washington Square Park. Union Square is walking distance too. There are a ton of Jazz bars in that area and good/cheap food - Pomme Frites comes to mind.

South of NYC is Chinatown and Little Italy. Great NY Noodletown is awesome, so is West New Malaysia. You could also check out a show at Bowery Ballroom - it's a pretty legendary indie venue.

I'll actually be in NYC the following week for the ACCT. I stay with my friends in Astoria, Queens. I'm a big fan of Brooklyn and Astoria as opposed to Manhattan but if you only have a few days you'll have plenty to do and see there. Long Island City is in between Mahattan and Astoria and has a lot of really cool stuff - breweries, bars, and great views of the city. LIC Beer Project is great and so is this Czech bar called Bierocracy.
