Just giving a pricing heads up on new stock:All Day Records is by far the best in the Triangle for prices on new records. I say this with the confidence of not going into Schoolkids in forever, but I'm still sure it's the case. They average 15-20% lower on new stock than anybody else, and including such online places like Insound.comThey also have a really nice MusicHall MMF 2.1 for $160 if anybody's in the market for a table right now. It could use a new dust cover if you're into aesthetics of those (has a few scuffs on the top of this one), but the plinth/deck/table/everything else is nice-looking. Would definitely recommend if you're in the market.

found some of my uncle's old records at my grandmom's. took his copies of exile on main street, the who by numbers, and live at leeds. i think live at leeds might be the only one worth listening to as the others are both kinda warped, and exile has some pretty bad scratches. they were all in a stack with stuff on top, so i'm sure that wasn't good for them either. i already have a copy of exile on main street, but this one might be an original pressing methinks.

Still have the postcards that came with it?Also, I wouldn't play those. Don't fuck your stylus up on shit like that.
12/17/2011 7:43:41 PM
my stylus is probably already fucked as it is. i've accidentally dropped the tonearm on the base a few times.negative on those postcards[Edited on December 17, 2011 at 8:16 PM. Reason : postcards]

so i've been wanting to get some speakers to use with my TT for a while, and my grandparents apparently bought a set of magneplanar SMGa speakers in the early 90s at the recommendation of my uncle and never really used them. i looked them up this morning. seem to go for around $300+ used these days. i don't know if they'd need to have any work done from not being used much though. people seem to think that they're pretty nice speakers for the price, and my grandmom indicated i could probably just have them for free. anyone else have experience with them? they look pretty sweet.[Edited on December 19, 2011 at 12:36 PM. For once Michael Spikel came through. Near mint original Gang of Four "Entertainment!" for four bucks.
12/19/2011 12:39:35 PM
^^No experience with those, but they look really cool. Good luck with them. The other day I found Better Than Ezra's Friction Baby for $5 bucks. Don't even think I've ever heard this album and I'm sure it's probably not good. However, the investment paid off. This thing is apparently super rare.
12/19/2011 8:42:11 PM
i went to a store in DC that sells a lot of random bullshit looking for ridiculous things for a gift exchange my friends and i are doing on friday and almost bought elton john's captain fantastic and the brown dirt cowboy, the alien soundtrack, and some art garfunkel album where the cover is a picture of him turning his head quickly so it looks all blurry. all for the sheer novelty, of course. kinda glad i left without anything.
12/19/2011 8:55:50 PM
also sorry for the double post but why is aligning your cartridge so god damn difficult? maybe it's just the protractors i'm using. having in incredibly rough go of this...
12/19/2011 8:57:55 PM
http://www.vinylengine.com/cartridge-alignment-protractors.shtmlI don't think the Alien soundtrack would be worth a damn. I was in a thrift store the other day and got excited to see a Clockwork Orange soundtrack, but it didn't have a record in it. I have the CD of that album, which is weirdly worth more...[Edited on December 19, 2011 at 9:48 PM. Reason : k]
12/19/2011 9:47:03 PM
none of them are worth a damntried using a protractor from that site. maybe i just downloaded one that doesn't work for my tonearm. idk. i don't have a printer, so i'm just gonna have to try and print one tomorrow at work i guess.and apparently my uncle is taking the speakers. said some shit about how they wouldn't work well with my setup because i'd need a subwoofer, which is bullshit because i've seen people saying they sound great without one. god damn it.[Edited on December 19, 2011 at 10:06 PM. Reason : .]
12/19/2011 10:03:02 PM
the solution to my problem was simple. the tonearms on these things can't be aligned properly because they're made primarily for DJing or some shit. cool. more incentive to get rid of it sooner i guess. i think i'm gonna need to replace the stylus though

http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/ele/2754689404.htmlhttp://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/ele/2754207370.html (price too high)I would seriously consider that top one. Hell, you could make about $30 selling the records back. Read some stuff online; it's a decent table. However, probably wouldn't recommend using that stacking feature. It's really awesome, but can mess your records up. [Edited on December 20, 2011 at 12:36 AM. Reason : k]
12/20/2011 12:29:23 AM
^ saw that top one the other day. i don't think i was able to find a price reference on it. and are all straight tonearms incapable of having the cartridge aligned, or would it also depend on the angle at which the headshell is attached? i was always kind of under the impression that an s-shaped tonearm was preferable in general anyway. any insight on that?
12/20/2011 4:26:20 PM
Plenty. http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=203592And, lol wut:
12/20/2011 4:35:20 PM
i wiped out nice price's bob dylan the other day. got a couple others i had been looking for too. heh, and i was supposed to be christmas shopping. love that damn place.
12/20/2011 4:49:19 PM
^^ well you apparently can't use any sort of protractor with mine that would align it, but i can't see how a straight tonearm that came on a rega wouldn't be able to be aligned.

heading back to winston-salem this weekend and saw this on craigslisthttp://winstonsalem.craigslist.org/ele/2753841453.htmllooks like the same guy is selling it on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/PIONEER-PL-41-TURNTABLE-VINTAGE-/170750387107?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27c18423a3the other two pl-41s on ebay are selling for $350 and $550. i haven't really been able to find too much info on it other than it being a "very nice" TT that has a somewhat heavy tonearm. would it be worth jumping on at $170, or would i be better off trying to hold out for something different that may or may not pop up around the DC area in the next few weeks/months?
12/22/2011 11:14:19 AM
^I could sit here all day and ask $300 for 12 Barbara Streisand records, but I'll probably be sitting for a while. Looks like that's an average price for that table with what he's asking for on CL and eBay. It's your call, but I wouldn't say you're getting a really awesome deal, but it's not bad. I'd personally wait, but that's because I don't really like the looks of that thing. To each his own, though...
12/22/2011 12:00:11 PM
By the way, just shot an ad out for a TD-160. I have a friend that's looking for a table also. If I get bites I'll let you know (not likely, unless it's some dude in Clayton that thinks he's got $800 in the bag with some shit that's been sitting in that extra room in his trailer for the last 30 years...).
12/22/2011 12:13:03 PM
Oh eff, I think I better hit this Fat Possum sale up. I'm really into this Unknown Mortal Orchestra as it turns out...

Found a Realistic STA-225 amp for less than the asking price on that copy of Whipped Cream ^ above. I'm super stoked. It's in mint condition. Probably going to end up flipping it, however, because I can't justify keeping it.

RADIO SHAXXX
12/27/2011 8:18:55 PM
Arthur Fiedler approves. Also, it's a pretty damned decent amp. You better ask somebody. And you know what else is awesome? Radio Shack still sells electronic parts. Granted they don't have anyone in their store that knows a damned thing about them, but they still sell them. That is AWESOME. [Edited on December 27, 2011 at 9:03 PM. Reason : k]

does anyone know anything about old solid state cabinets? I inherited one from my grandmother, the old turntable in it was busted so I took a new usb turntable and wired the old audio cables to a rca jack i built so i could plug the new turntable into the rca jack. Anyway, the new turntable still has a ceramic cartridge and when i play it through the cabinet i cant even turn the volume up past 1 or else its just crazy loud and the bass is out of control, even with the bass knob at 1. I need some help! how do I get this to work correctly?
12/28/2011 10:01:40 AM
Assuming the turntable has a phono preamp on-board, switch the phono/line output switch to the other position. Should solve your feedback problem. ]
12/28/2011 12:06:00 PM
I had thought about that last night but i was under the impression ceramic cartridge tables didnt use a pre-amp. That and I cant find a switch like that anywhere on this thing.[Edited on December 28, 2011 at 1:46 PM. Reason : t]
12/28/2011 1:46:10 PM
Sorry, just saw the USB part and assumed a preamp...missed the ceramic bit.Ceramic cartridges put out a much hotter signal than standard phono cartridges. If the cabinet is wired only for a standard phono cartridge output, there's no way to avoid feedback, because even running into an amp that can take it as a line level input will only give you a line-level out, which is just as hot as what you're running now.I'd just get a real deck and real amp/speakers. Cabinets are a pain and usually don't sound great, even I'd the speaker cones aren't rotted.
12/28/2011 6:20:54 PM
Those cabinets are all pieces of shit, from what I've mentioned earlier in this thread. It's pretty laughable most of the time you see them on Craigslist from what people try to ask for them; usually Outside the Beltline-type stuff. I didn't know they used ceramic cartridges in newly made tables, but to cut corners I guess it makes sense. What kind of table is it? Numark, AT, Ion? You're gonna mess your records up the longer you use the thing.Anyway, that Realistic amp sounds amazing. I got lucky as hell on it. Yay for magic tuning, too!
12/28/2011 11:24:31 PM
Folks, if you're looking for old amps, shoot me a message and let me know. I run across stuff all the time, but don't always buy it because I'm afraid of turning into one of those hoarders with 293402302 amps and turntables in his house. I try to stay away from junk, but always list what I have, so yeah...Any decent turntables I run across I always buy for the right price, and will list anything I come across here or sell to a local shop.
12/28/2011 11:53:48 PM
I know the cabinets arent the best of choices, but it was my grandma's, and its really the only thing I got from her house other than some dishes and whatnot, so I would really like to keep it up and running for sentimental value more than anything.
12/29/2011 9:24:19 AM
Something between the RCA converter and the turntable is communicating to give you way too much amplification, but I'm not technical on these things. My only advice would be to return that table and get one with a magnetic cartridge. Costco has one now for 70 bucks...
12/29/2011 10:03:06 AM
Got a R 330 Superscope I may very well be about to sell, but I'm listening to it now and kinda falling in love. Future Islands have never sounded so damned good. Bass response is fucking amazing, yet doesn't drown anything out. Wow. Almost feels like I'm at Kings...That being said, don't underestimate early Marantz amps, folks. I know if this thing sounds as it does, the Marantz has gotta be just as incredible...
12/30/2011 12:08:31 AM
Will have a Marantz 6200 turntable for sale relatively soon. PM if interested. Somewhere in the $150 range, fyi; willing to negotiate...It has an S-shaped tonearm, since u luv those Rat Soup
12/31/2011 6:35:18 PM
What? I don't even know enough about tonearms to have a preferenceToo bad you didn't have that thing a few days ago. I would've picked it up on my way back to DC
1/1/2012 3:20:16 PM
http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/ele/2777127880.htmlworth looking into, or are they asking too much? seems like they could be from some other ones i've seen on the internet
1/2/2012 12:43:24 PM
Mr Scrumples, let me get a first look at that Marantz when you're ready to sell.if it's free of scratches, and still looks sharp, i'll definitely take that off your hands.[Edited on January 2, 2012 at 8:00 PM. Reason : .]

^^About average. See if you can work a deal with him. ^Sale is dependent upon catching up with a Thorens this dude may or may not have, but it's looking decent. I also get to do a little bit of work on the Marantz, which is the story with many other pieces of audio equipment. The good news is all of this is going to have to be done in the next 2 weeks, so I'll let you know what's going on with it. I have too many projects as it is right now, so just be patient I guess. Aesthetically it's pretty sharp, by the way. Fully automatic, as well. Quick anecdote: As you folks may or may not realize, the people that restore and collect turntables and other vintage audio equipment are a very idiosyncratic, quirky, just weird bunch. Over the weekend I just had this seemingly pointless conversation with a guy who said he just picked up a Thorens at the Goodwill for $39 and proceeded to go on about all this audio equipment he's found at this one mecca of Goodwills apparently (that is way far away from NC, might I ad). I more or less had to tell him in somewhat of a polite way that I'm not interested in talking to him about anything other than a table he has to sell "if he decides to sell it." ^ just keep me posted.i like the looks of those Marantz as they look similar to the technics sl-1900 that i already have.unfortunately, i've told you of the ails of my two sl-1900's -- if i could combine the two things, i would be alright, unfortunately the main issue with the one i'm currently using is irreparable as i can't take the two legs from one to place on the other (spring loaded, and impossible to transfer over)
1/2/2012 8:16:48 PM
Whole fleet of quality early/mid-'00s reissues (and a few originals) at Schoolkids. A little overpriced, but not much, and they're all essentially brand new. ]
1/2/2012 8:25:12 PM
They're decent tables. I'm only going to keep two at a time and continue to buy/restore what I can find. Hopefully trying to stay away from being one of these rat-packing audio nerds. Going to have a few things to sell here coming up, and the Superscope I mentioned earlier should be for sale pretty soon (but already sold, depending...). I'll have a few cheaper things to get by on for anyone looking to get into the hobby as well...
1/2/2012 8:25:36 PM
Going ahead and listing this stuff as a bundle, and if no one here is interested, it's going to Craigslist. Amp: Fisher RS-1015 Turntable: Garrard 440M with Pickering cartridge. Nothing fancy in any sense of the word, but if you're new to wanting to spin records, $20 is a steal. So, that price is for both. I will throw in the speakers that came with the Fisher, also. Woofer liner has dryrotted, but nearly all of it's still in tact. I bet the Internet knows how to replace it easily, too.
1/2/2012 8:46:29 PM
Here is a pic of the Fisher amp I'm selling. It's in mint condition. Just finished spraying all contacts. Works like a champ. This is not your granny's solid state receiver. Or maybe it is...$20. Best deal ever.
1/3/2012 12:20:09 AM
There is a copy of Thriller on craigslist today for $225.00 if anyone is interested.
1/3/2012 4:16:51 PM
keep seeing this guy near me posting a bunch of old marantz audio equipment on craigslist. dude keeps asking $700 for a 6320q turntable saying he saw one that wasn't in as good condition as his go for more than that somewhere else. not sure he's gonna find anyone on craigslist who wants to drop $700 on that thing, but maybe he figures someone will if he holds out long enough. i'd probably start lowering the price tag if no one was biting for 2 months.
