Not knocking these hires at all, but this is hardly a dream staff (or best in nation or however Yow described it)

^^some pretty darn good ones though.best staff we have had here in at least 30 years

From a pure coaching aspect I tend to feel like the Lutz hire is huge. Honestly I can not think of many teams that have an assistant on the roster that has won as much as he did in Charlotte. I also like the guard play he had on his teams. It seemed like their guards could shoot the 3. I think he will be a quality recruiter as well. I liked the Early hire as he seemed to get good talent to bama when he was with MG. I would like to see Harris stay for the recruiting abilities. I think Lutz was more of a coaching hire and Early is mostly coming in to recruit. I think with the talent Larry brings in with Early's that Lutz can really help MG with coaching the kids up. So far I think this is a balanced coaching staff.Either way Archie will be our next coach. I think one reason we have a hard time getting an A list coach was because we have no alum in coaching. Many schools best hires come from Alum. I do not want to hear about Sid being alum cause he had a Sally Struthers degree. We really need a coach to stay a long time and teach some alum players about coaching. We really have very alum out there in the coaching ranks.

a coach is only as good as his staff
4/8/2011 8:03:57 PM
lets just get archie miller to be head coach with Nate McMillan, Vinny Del Negro and Julius Hodge to be assistantsis Lutz a defensive coach at all? I feel like our last assistant should be a defensive/big man specialist, we can stand to lose Larry Harris since the rest of our coaches are solid recruiters and better X/O coaches
4/8/2011 8:12:59 PM
a coach is only as good as his stuffand he's got the stuff
4/8/2011 8:14:39 PM
she knew he had the stuff when he was 18
4/8/2011 8:16:28 PM
Alright, which one of you updated Lutz's wiki page...you got called out by the gazette

^What did his Wiki page say? I just looked at it and didn't notice anything[Edited on April 8, 2011 at 9:13 PM. Reason : ]

A++++ hire!!! Would recommend!!!!!!

Officemate, a rabid uncc basketball and football fan, said that Lutz was known for having discipline problems wiith talented athletes and not playing defense...but his teams were fast and exciting. I'm worried we don't have discipline or defense in our coaches so far, which likely would've been solved with a gaudio hire.I'll have to ask him and others more when I get in on Monday, but we could see what they've said on ninernation.com[Edited on April 9, 2011 at 12:10 AM. do you really get all of your news from the office?if so, you should probably find some better sourcesfor example, my office mates think UNC's team this year should have won the national championship. i think they are full of shit. i believe your officemates that you frequently mention are full of shit as well

I say football because uncc is developing a football program now, he is a huge supporter of it, has a few uncc football shirts, and ordered some limited edition autographed football helmet. Keep trolling and adding no content though, it makes me happy and you look patheticLol what the hell, you people are attacking me instead of saying whether my information was accurate, which was the point of posting it here. N&O is trying to stir things up with the Harrick talk this morning. I think it makes sense that Gottfried is picking his brain, but I truly hope and expect he will not be an assistant coach. I'm all for second chances, but NCAA trouble has followed him to his last 3 coaching stops. He was only marginally successful at UGA, and left the program in a mess. He will also be 73 this summer, so I question whether he has the energy needed from college assistants. All in all, I'm not buying that Harrick is going to be a member of the staff, but I do expect Coach Gottfried to pick his brain a good bit.
4/9/2011 8:48:35 AM
Yow won't hire or let him hire anyone with NCAA issues...she has made that clear. I don't know if it has been changed or not but the gazette article said his wiki page had been edited at 4:30 saying he was an assistant at State.
4/9/2011 9:57:10 AM
It has been mentioned that a major problem with Gottfried's teams were that his staff turned into yes men after some personnel turnover.I dont think we will have this problem with these coaches.
4/9/2011 9:57:51 AM
Need some defense and big man development
4/9/2011 12:19:54 PM
So at this point have we officially hired a second or third assistant coach?
4/9/2011 6:03:48 PM
Lutz is fairly official
4/9/2011 6:04:59 PM
at this point i assume Larry Harris is gone? i haven't seen any posts or press releases in regards to his status on the staff, and if he was staying i would think that means our assistant slots are filleddeductive reasoning in this bitch
4/9/2011 7:07:01 PM
harris and strickland are the ones that were spreading most of the BD rumors. strickland told one of my personal friends that donavan was coming.
4/9/2011 7:24:01 PM
I don't think it's safe to assume he is gone until Gottfried fills all three assistant positions. Harris was gone last time before Sidney asked him to join his staff. It is safe to assume he has not been hired yet, and most likely Gottfried is looking at other options.
4/9/2011 7:27:19 PM
4/9/2011 7:30:26 PM
^ I agree. Harris may be a good coach, I don't know. But, IMO, it's time to just start with a clean slate. Totally new regime.
4/9/2011 7:36:20 PM
it seems like his job as a big time recruiter can be handled by Early/Lutz, based on the players they brought to fucking UNCC that said, if he was offered a spot on the staff, i would be ok with that
4/9/2011 7:56:52 PM
If Harris isn't part of the staff here, it wouldn't suprise me to see him on Archie's staff at Dayton. He won't be out of a job for long.
4/9/2011 8:31:00 PM
Harris is a big time recruiter. We would be fools to let him go.
4/9/2011 8:43:16 PM
How do we know Harris is that good of a recruiter?
4/9/2011 8:49:16 PM
^seriously?
4/9/2011 8:52:21 PM
what is the limit for how many assistants you can have in any capacity
4/9/2011 9:06:15 PM
I think it's 16
4/9/2011 9:08:45 PM
only gunzz would brag about getting grossly inaccurate "inside information".
4/9/2011 9:32:19 PM
4/9/2011 9:44:22 PM
i know that on scout.com or rivals.com they list the primary recruiter for committed playersobviously you could make the argument that it isn't one single coach who got a player to commit, but overall Harris has been known as a coach who can relate to players and he has been cited as a big reason many players have committed to State
4/9/2011 10:05:08 PM
The players themselves say he is a big reason they came.Believe it or not, in the years Harris has been here, NCSU has overachieved on the recruiting trail. We pull in talent that most other programs do no get. Those players were either wasted, transferred, or left early. But Harris got them here. That's why major programs want him-----------Side note: people who want to "clean house" have never managed anything or run a business before. Firing talented employees is one of the most expensive, dumbest things a business can do. You are firing someone for political affiliation, not the merits of their performance. This is a sign of bad management. Smart managers figure out how to get the most out of the talent they have.[Edited on April 9, 2011 at 11:56 PM. Reason : .]

4/10/2011 12:36:49 AM
There's also a reason politicians have term limits
4/10/2011 1:04:33 AM
how responsible is Harris for the two regimes (Sendek, Lowe) that underachieved?i understand the notion that the slate should be wiped clean, but the man earned some serious clout with the players he got to come to State/devil's advocate
4/10/2011 1:04:43 AM
he's pretty clueless as a coach. he gets things done on the recruiting trail, but not on the court. it made sense for lowe to keep him in the beginning to keep a little consistency in the program, but he really didn't need to keep him around more than a few years.
