The new Apple Watch having it's own cellular data receiver is pretty cool. Otherwise, nothing really new to the industry that I know of from any of the new hardware.]
9/12/2017 10:55:49 PM
^ Agreed.Watch + cellular is cool, but I don't need or want one.The rest of the announced stuff was pretty meh for me.
9/13/2017 7:51:13 AM
The cellular feature in the watch is cool, but it's already been done by other companies. The only crappy thing is the battery life on the watch. I heard that it has 1 hr of talk time and 4 hours using LTE.
9/13/2017 7:57:33 AM
The battery in the Apple Watch has always been a joke.Meanwhile the Gear S3 can hold its own for nearly 4 days.I really just don't understand the Apple worship.
9/13/2017 9:44:03 AM
meanwhile, the pebble time steel has 10 days of battery life. yeah, I don't get why you'd want to charge your watch daily.
9/13/2017 9:59:05 AM
yawn
9/13/2017 3:58:27 PM
Years after Android watches allow LTE connectivity, Apple finally decides to add it to their watches. But they can't make it work right. Come on apple.http://money.cnn.com/2017/09/20/technology/apple-watch-series-3-connectivity-issues/index.html?iid=ob_homepage_tech_pool

The High Sierra update was so full of innovation that it fucked up my MacBook.
9/25/2017 6:45:56 PM
^ and that's why I wait several months after a major OSX update to upgrade my shit.
9/28/2017 10:39:07 AM
I updated and had no issues (so far) on my Late 2013 MBPIt's pretty amazing the install process does an in-place change of the filesystem and it has been entirely seamless-- even had 10 extra GB of space available after the update.[Edited on September 28, 2017 at 11:59 AM. Reason : ]

I recovered to Sierra then installed High Sierra again. Everything went fine.

That new AppleTV looks pretty legit.

9/29/2017 1:38:27 PM
Can you really call a cellular receiver in a 2017 smart watch an "innovation," considering Samsung has had that shit since at least 2014? Fucking Apple fanboys

^As much as I dislike Apple products, they do have a somewhat compelling argument. But my question is and always has been - why don't they just make their batteries easier to replace?
12/27/2017 8:31:14 AM
Same reason most non-iPhones have also gone away from easily replaceable batteries -- they would rather you buy a new phone than just swap in a new battery.
12/27/2017 9:14:37 AM
Anyone here have an iPhone X? I usually replace my phone every 2 years, and I'm due.I got the wife a 8 Plus for Christmas and it's not too big. I was planning to get an X for me; but the no-home-button thing worries me. I don't know if I'm down with gestures and face ID.
12/27/2017 9:35:42 AM
The new gestures are awesome (they should bring them to the 6/7/8)Face ID is fairly different than Touch ID and takes adjustment to get used to

^^ Also, I'd avoid any and all biometrics, especially face recognition. Samsung phones, at a minimum, can be fooled by a photograph. Also, law enforcement can demand that you supply a fingerprint or face scan to unlock your phone; they can't demand your password. Given how ready police are to fuck you over these days, I'd be hesitant giving them any power to search my phone without a warrant or my permission.

Biometrics are harder than passwords for your girlfriend to crack.

The price they're asking for their homepod is insane.Perhaps the Echo isn't the best sounding speaker in the world, but man, I can get it for $80 when it is on sale. There's no comparing 80 to 350. Hell Bose doesn't even ask that much for their portable speakers - and it's only a matter of time before they integrate Alexa or Home into them. The homepod is not Apple at its finest.
2/26/2018 9:48:11 PM
Alexa came out like 3 or 4 years ago. Apple is always late to the party. But they'll still make a killing selling these things because some people are retarded.
2/26/2018 10:03:39 PM
The HomePod is being marketed more of an audio system, and pretty much all the reviews say it has stellar sound quality. If you need a good sounding system for ios or AppleTV (eventually), then it can't be beat.If you need a voice assistant, it's at the bottom of the stack at this point.
2/27/2018 12:53:26 AM
sonos + alexa sounds better and does more
2/27/2018 7:16:32 PM
if you use itunes exclusively it's not badall other scenarios you'd be stupid to get it

love the size of the XS Max but not sure anything else excites me about it to be honest
9/21/2018 10:12:24 PM
You mean the phone that is now the same size as the note, which has been about that size for years?
9/21/2018 11:48:43 PM
The cpu in the iPhone XS max is about 10-15% slower than the 4 core i7 clocked a ghz faster.

Neat. It's impressive that a high end cell phone can go tow-to-tow with a 5 year old high end SFF laptop.
9/24/2018 3:42:43 PM
got the Xs max on Friday.Upgraded from the 6s+ so it feels like I went from a moped to a ferrari. everything runs faster, got 4x the storage, the camera is way better. Took a minute to get used to no home button, but the extra screen space is nice. The upside of going 3 years between upgrades is i don't get jaded from the smaller yearly incremental changes.
9/24/2018 4:06:00 PM
we usually go 2, might go 3 this time... Not sure i like face scan... but hell i guess it's all we got.

Apple announced an FPGA board today to speed up 8K video editing... kind of interesting
6/3/2019 7:46:31 PM
^ olive branch for not supporting CUDA cards
6/3/2019 10:14:55 PM
fpga cards? seriously? i get telling nvidia to fuck off, but spending the money in opencl would have been a FAR better investment
6/4/2019 12:04:06 AM
does the $1k monitor stand do anything or is it as ridiculous as the headlines sound?
6/4/2019 9:39:45 AM
^^,^^^No GPU could do what they're doing with afterburnerCUDA is great general compute but a fully dedicated video decoding/encoding/effects chip is always going to be better-- it's why Tesla ditched Nvidia too for compute. Obviously an extremely niche market they're after here, but still interesting...[Edited on June 4, 2019 at 12:23 PM. Reason : ]
