Cass, either the state is lying or there is something wrong. No way an electronic transfer takes longer than 2 weeks to hit your account.

Money was in the account this morning. Day #39. 36 hours after I got the notice from the state.
4/7/2011 9:31:27 AM
Mine was there this morning as well, roughly 60 days after I e-filed. I just got the notification yesterday, but that was the first time I have checked it in a while so not sure when it was actually updated.Either way, w00t!

I don't understand how the gov. chooses who gets their refunds first. I thought it was about $ amounts, but that concept was shot down in this thread.I would just be worried that you got the notice that it had been paid 2 weeks ago and its still not in your account. NC is telling you that they have paid the money, and its out of their account, just not in yours. Can you call your CPA and check the bank routing/acct #?Hope you get a quick resolution!

You guys are really up in arms about your refunds. Why not just change your deductions this year?
4/7/2011 2:58:31 PM
Just sent in my paper return today. Hopefully, it won't take forever to get my return even with this government shut-down.

Its Turbo Time!even though 2010 wasn't financially kind to me relatively speaking, its nice to feel like a pro athlete since I kind of just "made" $3k+ in about an hour[Edited on April 10, 2011 at 3:19 PM. Reason : silver lining]

ha, sure didn't take Federal long to cash that check. Sent it on Wednesday and it was posted on Friday. Lets see how long the state waits to cash theirs.

what are the requirements that have to be met to claim a child as a dependent. don't you have to meet ALL of the requirements, too. not just 1 out of 4 or however many there are?and IF my parent claims me as a dependent, doesn't that fuck me over? because isn't the parent getting $$ back for claiming me??and WHAT do i do if they claimed me as a dependent but i don't meet any of the criteria? i lived at home 5 months of 2010. i'm not under the age of 24. i'm not disabled. and i don't really know what "provides over 1/2 of support" means but my parent paid my health insurance for like 4 months in 2010 and my cellphone bill for all of 2010 (we're on a fucking family plan). i'm pretty sure with school (i paid for with loans, my OWN loans), food, clothes, other living costs, medicine, doctors appts, etc, etc that doesn't qualify as 1/2 of my support, but i'd like to know.sorry for the dumbass questions, but we're having an argument right now and i'd like to know who is in the right here. maybe MAYBE i could be claimed as a qualifying relative?!?! but not a qualifying child. [Edited on April 11, 2011 at 9:00 PM. Reason : .]
4/11/2011 8:53:40 PM
I don't think your parents can claim you as dependent anymore if you're over 21.
4/11/2011 9:53:24 PM
^^please do not go into tax law j/k [Edited on April 11, 2011 at 10:19 PM. Reason : v lol I was talking about the recent law school grad]
4/11/2011 9:53:57 PM
^lol, that's why I don't do my own tax.
4/11/2011 9:59:11 PM
^^^^It def sounds as though your parent should not have listed you and yes it does most likely fuck you over.
4/11/2011 10:31:06 PM
publication 501 says:During the tax year in question-you are under 19 or under 24 and a full-time student in a qualifying educational programAND-lived with parent for over half of the year, excluding temporary absencesAND-you did not provide over half of your supportAND-you are not filing a joint return with spouse if marriedOR-permanently disabledeven if you don't meet the criteria for a qualifying child, you can still be claimed as a qualifying relative if you meet those criteriahttp://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p501.pdfpages 10 & 11i have this same argument every fucking year--file your tax return by mail if you don't think that you are a qualifying child/relative and the irs will sort it out/ask your parent to file an amended tax return]
4/11/2011 10:37:50 PM
^ THANK YOU!! so basically as i thought. def not qualifying child. can still POTENTIALLY claim as qualifying relative though, i don't think i can be in this instance because my gross income wasn't less than the personal exemption amount. plus ain't nobody providin' more than 1/2 my support so. stand back bitches. JUST MAKING SURE PEOPLE. i wanted to be right before i yelled anymore profanities. except that i totally yelled them before even confirming i was right. whoops. and no worries, no interest in tax. or the law really, so you guys are all totes safe.
4/11/2011 11:01:13 PM
I've pretty much been on my own since I was 19/20, but my mom claimed me as a dependent for as long as she possibly could. But she's awesome and I came out of her womb, so I let it slide.Oh...and I got my big "first time home buyer's credit" check in yesterday.

ok so i'm kind of (ok really) annoyed. i have been calling the number listed on the dept of revenue page for 2 weeks and it's always busy. http://www.dornc.com/aboutus/phones.htmlIndividual Income Tax Refund Inquiry 1-877-252-4052my CPA had called this number 2 weeks ago and she said she got a busy signal too. she goes, "oh they're probably just busy because everyone is calling." i'm thinking they just took the phone off the hook so they don't have people calling and harassing them for their money. i believe my issue is serious enough that i should be able to speak to someone. there's also an address listed as a "service center." i don't know if anyone has gone to one of these before and if it would be worth my while. here is the address listed for the Raleigh office:N.C. Department of Revenue4701 Atlantic Avenue, Suite 118Raleigh, NC 27604http://www.dornc.com/aboutus/field.html

I know you are annoyed but I have had and will have clients wait will over 4 months before they see a state refund. We have no clue why and have just come to accept the delay. I had a client that filed her 2009 return with me on Janury 18th, 2010. State refund was received June 12th, 2010. Her 2010 state refund was processed and paid within 5 days this year. There was no difference in the returns or how they were filed. There is no method to the madness. There is, however, one solution I tell everyone... update your NC-4 and increase your exemptions so you owe them next year. At this point you wait to pay them until the April 15th.
4/13/2011 12:41:25 AM
I have never gotten a refund from the State. I owe them like $500 this year so yeah as others suggested maybe update your info so that you get to keep your money all year and at the end they are waiting on you instead to send in your payment.
4/13/2011 8:38:49 AM
^^ oh i completely understand. but my problem is that on the State Refund site it has said for the last 2 week that they sent my money to my bank for deposit but i haven't seen anything. i'm just worried that the money was sent but to the wrong account. that's mostly why i want to get in touch with someone.

Coworker mailed her state return within a few days of when I efiled...she got her refund today
4/15/2011 3:13:01 PM
Yay, i owe 2900 in federal and 400 to NC. Time to adjustmy withholdings. Groan.
4/15/2011 3:42:28 PM
yeah i owe 3700 back to Wall st, by way of the IRS.but getting 250 back from the state... so yay?
4/15/2011 3:46:30 PM
I think I'm going to hire a CPA this year. It's crunch time and I was going to try and itemize, but I'm getting 175 back from federal and owe the state 190. I'm taking standard deduction and saying fuck it.

I Received an w-2c from employer and have to amend my tax return. When I refile, if I take a deduction I forgot about will that trigger an audit?
4/30/2011 1:08:29 PM
Anyone still waiting on a State refund? I efiled on like he 13th. Expecting about $500
5/6/2011 4:30:09 PM
No, I wrote checks.
5/6/2011 6:17:17 PM
Well, dammit. I'm owed a hair under $4,000 from the feds, filed on April 1st, and now my refund is "under review." If I don't here from them again within 45 days from now then I can call back. Total horse shit. Our filing was totally legit and nothing out of the ordinary. We had a kid on New Year's Eve and our deductions were all routine (church tithing and mortgage interest accounting for most of it).

Before 2011 goes away:Any recommendations for a tax service? Any TWWers? I want to be able to sit down and talk with an honest, knowledgeable person. Figure out my financial situation, learn what I can do to keep my tax burden down, and just educate me in general on taxes, tax advantaged accounts, deductions, credits, donations, etc.
12/12/2011 1:43:01 PM
anyone? anyone?
12/13/2011 8:47:40 AM
