So the GT staff thinks they have an inside scoop on the Pack's scouting report..hmmm..."Tech's McCollum faces an old friend"http://www.ajc.com/sports/georgia-tech/techs-mccollum-faces-an-617701.html By Doug RobersonThe Atlanta Journal-ConstitutionGeorgia Tech assistant coach Andy McCollum has never had to face a team he used to work for. He'll do it twice this season. The first game comes against N.C. State at noon on Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium. McCollum was the Wolfpack's linebackers coach for the previous three seasons until Tech coach Paul Johnson hired him to coach the defensive line. Before that, his previous collegiate job was as head coach at Middle Tennessee State (1999-2005), which Tech will host on Oct. 16."I knew this week was coming," McCollum said. "No one in the country has as much respect for Tom O'Brien and North Carolina State and those players, the ones I coached or the ones I recruited, and their staff. My three years were great. I know how good they are. The thing about North Carolina State was we played a lot of young kids when Coach O'Brien got there. They've been through the fire. People say they're playing a lot better. Well, you play better when you get older."O'Brien has led the Wolfpack to its first 3-0 start since he arrived in Raleigh four seasons ago. McCollum said N.C. State is benefiting from the experience the players gained the previous three seasons when injuries consistently wiped out depth at key positions, including middle linebacker Nate Irving's horrific car crash, which forced him to miss the 2009 season.Johnson said there's not much McCollum can do to help Tech with the schemes that N.C. State may use, but he can give them information about the players."I left a great program and came to a great program," McCollum said. "To see the success they are having, you feel proud for it. We know we've got a big challenge for us. But we're also proud of where we're starting to get. Come Saturday, all that is blocked out and you go and try to win the game."Long drivesO'Brien said the best way to keep Georgia Tech's offense off the field is by keeping his offense on. After North Carolina dominated the first quarter by holding onto the ball for more than 11 minutes, Georgia Tech turned the tables and owned the clock, keeping the ball a minimum of 9 minutes, 25 seconds in each of the last three quarters in last weekend's 30-24 victory. The Jackets ended up with the ball for 35 minutes and racked up more than 400 yards of offense.O'Brien said the time of possession that the Jackets usually hold can negatively affect the other team's offense. Instead of sticking to the game plan, the players begin to press. He said, should that begin to happen on Saturday, he will have to tell his team not to panic and that they shouldn't feel like they have to score on every play."It's always been a problem when we've played option football teams," O'Brien said. "They do a great job of holding on to the football."The Jackets are holding onto the ball an average of 32:24 seconds this season. State is averaging 32:17 in time of possession.

yeah, it's wednesday and i'm afraid if I get any more excited I will froth at the mouth
9/22/2010 11:01:20 AM
i'm really hoping our defense will play assignment football. The GT offense has a chance to really make us look stupid. I don't think we can overcome the stalled offensive drives that we've been prone to these first few games. consistency on offense will be key.
9/22/2010 11:08:49 AM
I hate to say it, but I dont think we win this game. Its on the road, and I think our D is gonna get exposed. The D is much improved, but its still a really young group working against a tough offensive scheme they have never seen before. I think GTs offensive is gonna amass a ton of yards, win time of possession, and our offensive wont be able to keep up; but it will be a shoot out. 37-24 Tech
9/22/2010 11:20:28 AM
the D is what kept state in the game at UCF though, right?[Edited on September 22, 2010 at 11:24 AM. Reason : granted that was UCF, but road is road..]
