^^I'm really curious to see what you think about it. I've always seen them as number one on citysearh every year and it has been highly recommended by friends and fellow foodies but I've never managed to make it out there though it's definitely on my list of places to try soon. I'll try to see if you post on it on this thread in the next few days

We'll see, not sure if it's going to be dinner tomorrow or on the 30th. I'll report back when I do. I'll also have a review on Yelp*.

^ Man ain't that the truth. It really annoys me when I see a sushi restaurant charging $texas and every single one of their damn rolls has mayo as a part of it. The other day I saw a menu where one of the rolls had TWO types of mayo in it

He gets it on and off. I guess whenever it's in season. I remember him giving me a taste I think in late-October.

If you have such high standards for sushi, why are you getting specialty rolls instead of real, traditional sushi? Do you actually think this style (popularized and accepted in our country) is absent at other locales that have been praised by you and others in this thread?

And why are you hating on just Sono? For comparison, since this is a point of contention, I looked at Waraji's menu to double-check (since all the hating on Sono seems to accompany hype for Waraji itt). From their menu they have 10 out of 20 specialty rolls with mayo or cream cheese (only one is cream cheese). By comparison, Sono has 8 out of 32 specialty rolls with mayo or cream cheese.

It still seems heavy-handed and baseless. You can praise a restaurant without debasing others needlessly and without tact, which is my point. All I'm saying is that it's been handled crudely, and it's annoying to see such zealous attacking of local restaurants in a thread that should be celebrating them.

i don't order that

but that is what, in my experience, people LOVE about sono. good specialty rolls. specialty rolls are not my thing. i don't want "good" specialty rolls. therefore, i do not eat there.

i stick to places where what i like is consistently good. *shrug*

can't help it if i had a bad experience there! but again, i'm not the only one.

i think the hate is just TWW's normal response to someone who continues to praise something they don't like haha...i mean...it is TWW.

and it isn't really hate. i'm glad there is a downtown sushi restaurant that EVERYONE who is anyone loves. i like seeing business in dtown raleigh. my opinion of the place just happens to be negative, that is all. everyone has things/places they don't like for a variety of reasons.

Then maybe I need to start making baseless statements about Waraji, because the Sono hate is again baseless and ridiculous. And there hasn't been "praise" within TWW, outside of my level-headed plea for reason and proper culinary assessment, granted it's probably not the best place to expect that.

I understand what you're trying to say about your experience, but your experience wasn't bad, Sono just has things you don't like. That doesn't degrade the content of the food that is offered, it's your issue. You don't go to a vegan restaurant and say how awful it is because you hate vegan food, that's your fault, not theirs, it doesn't reflect at all on them. The criticism you have offered simply has no bearing on any actual culinary ability, and your assessment of what people love about Sono seems pretty hollow considering the only defense it's received in this thread had nothing to do with specialty rolls.

It's fine for you to not like Sono's wares, but you're only contributed negatively to the discussion here by treating it condescendingly. That is my concern.

"baseless"

fish did not taste as fresh to me as other places.

do not want to disguise non fresh tasting fish in disgusting mayo covered roll.

therefore, experience = bad. because, to me, stinky fish = not good food.

i can't really put it any other way except that yes, having non-fresh tasting fish is a pretty big turn off. fine, maybe it was a one time thing, whatever, but still i'd rather go where, in my experience, which i realize is different from yours, has been consistently fresh. getting a bad salad or something somewhere is one thing, but fish is something that takes me awhile to get over because non fresh fish is just....bad. it scars you. or at least it does me.

you tend to assume that just because someone doesn't like a restaurant that consistently wins best sushi and that chefs love (though i know a few who will argue that with you) that they know nothing about food, sushi, etc. its like you can't handle someone not liking what you like.

end of discussion about sono! i will no longer comment on sono. fair? i'll leave you to defend it amongst the other haters.

I'm sorry you got upset that I analyzed your continued statements, it does not, however, warrant your awful understanding of the grief I have with this thread. I assume nothing, it's only you that continue to make some pretty absurd assumptions (I replaced baseless with absurd).

However I am willing to let it die. This isn't about just Sono. The dogged, exaggerated claims made here is just annoying to see in a community that could be supporting good local businesses, businesses acknowledged as good by people with a lot more weight than like three people in a sushi thread on TWW.

Agreed. If you like Sono, fine. But just because someone doesn't like Sono doesn't mean they don't know anything about sushi. That seems like a pretty absurd statement to make

I'm kind of curious about this Mirage place since they claim to have o-toro. Didn't think you could get that outside of Japan.

Overheard some guys last week bitching about the toro at Mura. They said it tasted like it had been defrosted in a microwave

I'm happy to report that the sushi at Mirage is pretty good. It's not on par with Shiki Sushi or Sushi Thai, but still quite tasty.

went to Waraji last night and had what was probably one of the best Japanese dining experiences of my life. I had nigiri salmon, shrimp and tuna (with undyed ginger I might add), a ginger salad that was fantastic and had a really nice tang to it, really great miso soup, and to top it off SUKIYAKI.

in-fucking-credible.

I will post my full review of Waraji soon, because I've totally been ignoring Jen's PMs on how it went.

It's a very good review. Had some great food. Some drawbacks. Some comparisons will be drawn.

The hamachi kama wins Best Appetizer Ever Devised though.

We tried out Sushi 9 - while not the best sushi, I was still pleasantly surprised by the quality, and overly surprised by the atmosphere... when you walk inside, it feels like you were transported to a place on glenwood or off fayetteville st

it is pretty much the same menu as Sushi Tai, with some slight differences (at least in the sushi). Most rolls (specialty at least) are between 9-13 bucks, but they are always BOGO so you can eat for pretty cheap there

I will eat there again

Lindsey got a roll covered in that spicy tuna junk- very good stuff! made a mess though!

I had to get the fried bagel roll (cheating, I know, but it is too good not to get!)- almost as good as it is at sushi thai, but they needed to put more eel sauce and sesame seeds on it

Sono and Haru both have good lunch time deals (I can leave full for ~12-15 bucks, and I go nuts on some sushi)
