I really enjoyed it. Yes they did change some parts but they haven't been huge details so far. Han shot first people might not like it but fuck em'.

I liked the movie, but I thought it was toooooo looooong. I had to pee twice!! (this was at Mission Valley so the beer I drank is partly to blame)I read the book back in middle school, so I don't remember too much. What's the deal with the necromancer? And Radhagast the Brown? What the heck was the point of his character? I recall the book as an exciting adventure story. The extra plotlines seem a little pointless. Can't we just have a movie about the thrilling quest of an unlikely hero and his 13 friends? Why so many minutes spent staring into the distance while the wind blows your hair? This may be hard to believe, but I used to be a big LOTR nerd back in the day So if someone like me thinks the movie is too long, it's too long! Or maybe I just grew out of it PS ... the part where Gandalf tells Bilbo, "The thing you need to know about a sword is ..." did any Game of Thrones fans expect him to say, "Stick them with the pointy end"?? I think that would've been fun. Instead it was some long-winded crap about something.

In isolation i dont think the movie felt too long. It flew by for me and felt more like a 2 hour movie. However as far as the scope of the story, I don't think they NEED 3 movies of this length to tell the story effectively.

Anyone remember the little cartoon guy that was like epic shit...thought it was cool didn't know what it was...the cartoon seemsed to be based on circles
12/16/2012 10:50:48 PM
^uh ?and the movie didnt feel long at all to me, but i suppose that may because I'm not bothered by scene shots etc.
12/17/2012 12:35:38 AM
I took my 5 and 9 year old and am a pretty hardcore Tolkien nerd. That said, I enjoyed it and did not feel it was too long. We planned in advance and never had to take either of the boys out for a bathroom break, even though we devoured an entire large popcorn and Dr. Pepper.I am still wondering what they are going to do for 3 movies. I guess getting from the end of this to heading up the river from Dale possibly would be the end of the 2nd movie, and then killing Smaug, the battle of the 5 armies, and conclusion will be movie 3. I don't know how many people in this thread have read Unfinished Tales, but that has The Quest for Erebor, which is where some of this additinal narrative outside of the Bilbo Baggins perspective comes from.

^That sounds likely. Also remember when the Dwarves and the Hobbit were holed up in Beorn's home, right before their adventure into Mirkwood? During that time both Beorn and Gandalf were missing for nearly a week or so. That's a great opportunity to tie Beorn and the Council into attacking the Necromancer and forcing him into Mordor, while simultaneously doing a flashback and explaining Thrain's capture (father of Thorin) by the necromancer, and showing the power of one of the Dwarf rings that was given to the "dwarf lords." It will be intersting to see another version of Gollum in Thrain, and Gandalf's dealings with the Necromancer. Should be interesting, assuming he doesn't F it up.

I don't think Azog was even alive when Thorin and Co. were around. Azog did reside in Moria, and did have dealings with Thorin's ancestors.
12/17/2012 11:33:43 AM
Yeah I didn't think Azog was alive. His son, Bolg, was in the book though as the one trying to avenge Azog.

I enjoyed it, but I agree it was too long. I had enough of Bilbo's house. It was really distracting for the main guy to be CGI when they could've easily done him with makeup. Probably will see these movies in the theater with friends, but that's it.

I was confused at first, but Azog was also my guess.
12/18/2012 7:45:08 AM
Maybe he forgot to say the main "bad" guy.
12/18/2012 8:39:55 AM
Yes, I meant "main bad guy". My bad

In relation to that, one thing I was worried with at first was that this more cartoony version of Middle Earth (especially being 10 years of technology ahead of the filmed LOTR) would mesh poorly with the original trilogy. I will say that if you are going to be a purist in that regard that it might be a small issue. Everything is much more glossy here than you might have been used to in the original trilogy. It definitely feels more computer-backed this time even if it technically isn't.However, personally I came to terms with that through Gandalf's dialogue early on at Bag End. Peter Jackson not so sneakily added a small tag-line on to the end of a quote I love that is right out of LOTR. “Every good story deserves to be embellished.” Now, I could be wrong but I don't remember that line in the book after the discussion about the "invention of golf."It doesn't give Peter Jackson free reign, but it does set the tone for the fact that The Hobbit is a story written years after Bilbo's adventures and it isn't a stretch of the imagination that a little embellishment might make it's way into someone's "war stories" so many years after the fact. (Look at Hollywood's version of real-world 'true stories'). This doesn't mean that the changes will necessarily be viewed as good or bad by each individual, just an observation. So far I think, despite the few complaints I have, Peter Jackson made a very enjoyable 1st movie and I'm interested to see how the others turn out.

I guess I should have been more clear. I agree that the whole quote about the golf is line for line from the book like you posted, but I think the followup line in the movie after Bilbo questions the golf quote - “Every good story deserves to be embellished.” - was added.[Edited on December 18, 2012 at 5:39 PM. I went to Southpoint to see the HFR3D version. I can't say I really noticed the HFR making any difference at all. Otherwise, seemed fine, not too long, etc.
12/18/2012 11:58:15 PM
The actor that plays thorin is incredibly unremarkable. No real reason to stick out. Only his voice seems to fit the character. No real complaints other than the unnecessary rock giants and the stretching out of the locals.

I enjoyed it, but I'll admit it was kind of bad. I'm a big fan of the setting, and I probably would have enjoyed any shit Peter Jackson flung at me.Way too much Deus Ex Machina. Maybe that's how it is in the book (its been nearly a decade since i read it) but its a lot less palatable on a screen.
12/27/2012 12:37:00 AM
I'll go see the next two since I'm obligated by fandom, but I did not enjoy this movie. Way too much stuff shoehorned in, way too long, way too much attempted humor. The escape from the goblins was just a horrible sequence.
12/27/2012 5:06:12 AM
^^yes there is a lot of deus ex machina aka Gandalf. In the book, the King of Eagles was just chillin' on the cliffs and wanted to check out the fires the goblins were setting

I really enjoyed it. Almost no complaints. I agree with those saying it felt more like a 2 hour movie. Tons of great action made the time fly by.

I sat the kids down yesterday afternoon and we watched The Fellowship in Blu-Ray. They enjoyed it and said they were not scared by any of the scenes, though some of the creatures were a little creepy. Maybe this weekend we will have time to knock out the other 2 movies and get them caught up.

Gettin' old, had to look up the dialogue of the trailer.Radagast: What if it's a trap?Gandalf: It's undoubtedly a trap. Now that I know that's all I can hear but at first I couldn't tell what the crap they were saying. What if it's a chair? It's undoubtedly a chair.

Sigh, why are they having a fight while they are going down the river in barrels...You don't need to Michael Bay every scene in the book, dammit.

I thought it was better than the first. That was sure a nice teaser into the finale. Ended so abruptly.
