I'm fairly certain that if you went to elementary school in NC in the late 80's early 90's, the $2 lunch was subsidized, they all were (at least in Gaston County).

Can we all at least acknowledge that the emphasis placed on this shit is designed to distract us?I mean, conservatives ruled for 8 years, and I don't think they made any gains on resolving the welfare situation...yup, pretty sure the last president to do anything about it was Clinton (but he's a Democrat! I'm so confused!)Republicans won't do shit to decrease entitlements because they need to keep us all outraged about overfed poor people, milking the system and living it up and shit.

It is an unfortunate human failing that a full pocketbook often groans more loudly than an empty stomach

^ You should keep that in mind when you advocate for increased government involvement. If you think the poor are under-served through capitalism when their money only speaks 1/10th as loud as that of a middle class citizen, compare that to government where their lobbying only speaks 1/1000th as loud.

It's more that I hate hearing rich people complaining than I care about the poor.

Bridget, go back and look to see who sent the welfare reform bill to clinton three times before he signed it. Basically daring hiim to veto it the third time. Enjoy

^ I prefered that square pizza to the round pizza we got in school.

^^^One of Clinton's main goals when he ran for office was to reform the welfare system. He explicitly stated this when he campaigned. And, no, I don't find it surprising that his Republican House/Senate initially put forward an inadequate bill so that he would look weak on his commitment when he was essentially forced to veto the nonsense they put forward.
2/9/2010 4:35:20 PM
hahah, seriously. So you admit that the Republicans drafted the welfare reform bill?
2/9/2010 4:40:26 PM
Yes, and instead of jumping to make headway with Clinton, they took the opportunity to make Clinton look weak and waste time. I'm not saying this is unique to Republicans...both sides do it.My point is only that reforming welfare is less important to Republicans than manipulating us with classist rhetoric and maintaing that Democrats are weak in that regard.
2/9/2010 5:14:48 PM
weak in what regard? The classic stereotype is republicans carry the rich, business owners, and religious. Dems carry unions, hollywood, minorities, youth, and entitlements. I dont think they were trying to make him look weak at all. THe parts the dems fought that were supposed to hurt the family, actually passed and worked. They were simply calling him on a campaign promise. The point being, that you lay a claim that only a democrat does anything about welfare reform when it was a republican bill. It was just a poor example of your view. thats all.
