Apparently - it's on his imdb list. But I haven't seen anything on that list, yet he still looks familiar.

Hmm this man appears to be going batshit insane, perhaps I should beat his face in with a shovel... hmmm yes this seems to be an adequate response to the situation.
4/21/2010 3:10:23 AM
^ they had given the guy morphine to calm him down but it didnt work at all, they had no choice. i dont think the intent was to kill the guy but just to knock him unconscious; unfortunately, a bit too much force was used.and before you say "that's such bullshit, yadda yadda yadda.." if it was your ass on the line in that situation where the enemy could come charging at any minute knowing full well your location due to the guy screaming, you wouldn't hesitate to do whatever it took to shut the guy up. like Sledgehammer said "better him than all of us."
4/21/2010 7:48:13 AM
^it was a real event that happened in front of Sledge according to his memoir^^^watch the videos i posted on the bottom of the last page, i bet that's where you remember him from, even if you barely remember the show.[Edited on April 21, 2010 at 8:30 AM. Reason : add]
4/21/2010 8:29:42 AM
^I'd never seen that show, but I remembered him from Night At The Museum almost immediately.
4/21/2010 8:44:55 AM
thanks Jeepin, i do vaguely remember reading something about the actual events. JCE paints it like nothing else was tried and that the only response was to kill the guy with a shovel
4/21/2010 9:27:28 AM
^^^No dice. He probably just looks like someone else or my memory's playing tricks on me.
4/21/2010 6:33:37 PM
damn, took 5 attempts to finish that last episode. this show is so boring. Only characters I know are lucky and the creepy guy -- one is a whiny and the other is creepy. Not a good foundation for a show
4/24/2010 5:10:31 PM
the way creepy guy talks reminds me of Fenster from The Usual Suspects
4/25/2010 6:06:08 PM
heh...I just started The Pacific "late" on my DVR but caught up to live TV halfway through the damn introLOVE this miniseries, but seriously longest damn intro ever...(and I watch the commentary w/ the vets in the beginning)[Edited on April 25, 2010 at 9:08 PM. Reason : ]

I assume they were going for the surreal given the landscape, but creepy tossing rocks... dang.
4/26/2010 2:24:19 PM
it was a pretty awesome bit of acting and dialog between snafu and sledge during that scene. snafu telling sledge not to cut the jap soldier's gold tooth out. he told him not to because of the germs, but you could really read between the lines and feel snafu saying "don't turn into me man. i'm too far gone, but you still have a chance". all the while tossing pebbles into that other jap's open skull cavity made it even that much better. Probably one of the best scenes thus far.
4/26/2010 2:46:05 PM
yeah, that was a really good scene. it added a lot to snafu's character. You can tell at moments he's still pretty with it, while at others he's just in another world and doing things most wouldn't even imagine. It was interesting to see that he was aware of it, and for him to warn sledge of the slippery slope he was on.
4/26/2010 2:53:03 PM
Ah yeah when Sledge turned around and you could see the pebbles splashing into the dude's skull I was like 'holy shit wtf'.Also, the part when the Japanese soldier drew his sword and charged him, that was awesome... it would have been awesomer if we hadn't seen it in the previews a few times though.
4/26/2010 4:16:11 PM
i was expecting sledgehammer to jump that smart-ass "pretty-boy" officer back at their staging base after the remark he had made. but man that stare down was badass.

Got 3/4 of the way through the last episode on the first try. Stopped because I didn't know who that was on the stretcher who got killed. Seemed like we were supposed to feel that loss as significant.Episode does do a good job of showing how what the guys are doing is completely inane and savage, though.
4/26/2010 10:24:51 PM
It was Chuckler, he was in Leckie's unit.
4/27/2010 7:59:14 AM
^^ you mean where the stretcher is being moved through the troops and everyone stands up and you see many of them saluting? that was their commanding officer (ack-ack) who was killed by a sniper, one shot one kill. and yes you are supposed to feel that loss as being very significant considering the kind of man he was to the men. you really see it on the Gunny's face cause that's when he really falls apart and breaks down. tough as nails, balls to the wall marine breaks down and gets very emotional; that above all else should show how significant that death was.[Edited on April 27, 2010 at 8:02 AM. Reason : ^^]
4/27/2010 8:01:24 AM
yeah...he could have been talking about 3 different stretchers.the first was Chuckler who was getting carried out as Sledge and Co. were entering the battle. You were supposed to feel something there and remember that just because Runner and Leckie got shipped out the rest of their group was still there fighting.the second was when Sledge had to carry the stretcher through the battlefield to bring back injured men. The guy they picked up was Hillbilly, who was the Lt. of Sledge's company. the third was Ack-Ack, probably the only man who has kept Sledge from the brink of insanity and givin him hope since he's been in battle. And if you didn't feel anything when the guys gave him a makeshift honor guard then you lack soul.
4/27/2010 8:10:07 AM
The guy in Leckie's unit who was on the stretcher wasn't dead btw, it looked like he had one of his leg's blown off though. And even if you hadn't seen prior episode's, you could tell what type of guy Sledge's CO was... he came and hung out with all the enlisted men when they were resting and got that dude a new pair of trousers after he crapped himself when the Japanese guys came after him from that cave.
4/27/2010 10:23:54 AM
^Yeah, despite limited exposure to his character, he was my favorite. He was the kind of guy that most soldiers would love to fight under. He was a great leader, a good man, and seemed to calm and motivate his men simultaneously. I was upset when he got sniped, I wanted to see more of his character.
4/27/2010 10:46:45 AM
I must admit this show is getting better as it goes on.
4/27/2010 12:49:28 PM
ah, I was referring to one of the first two, not the third. I saw the third after making the post. Didn't remember who the first two were at all.
4/27/2010 7:23:38 PM
^^ exactly
4/27/2010 7:26:31 PM
im still unclear.the CO that got sniped, he was the same guy who was counseling Sledge in the rain and told him "you can't dwell on it. You can't dwell on any of it" , right?
4/29/2010 7:42:23 PM
correct. "Ack-Ack" Haldane.
4/29/2010 9:59:40 PM
man, no posts about last night's episode?? Man, even knowing the outcome of Basilone's life i was definitely a little heart broken after that hour. A great episode all the way around. It was nice to see him somewhat out of shape after a year of selling war bonds and realizing he had to get back in the game to train his new recruits. 2 episodes left.
5/3/2010 8:39:56 AM
only 2?
5/3/2010 8:54:42 AM
*sniff* Basilone
5/3/2010 9:42:49 AM
NOooooooooooooooooooooo
5/3/2010 10:14:09 AM
Wow only 2 left? Damn it's gone by quick. I guess one will be a conclusion on Sledge's story and one will be a conclusion on Leckie's story.
5/3/2010 10:39:36 AM
Basilone was just asked to get killed in that episode. It was obvious from the very beginning this was going to happen.
5/3/2010 10:53:57 AM
you knew Basilone dying was coming, but it still was not easy to take
5/3/2010 11:24:49 AM
I think it'll probably be wrapping up of Sledge's story and then have both his and Leckie's return home. Makes sense though; after Iwo Jima, Sledge's unit was scheduled for the invasion of the Japanese mainland. A pair of nukes made that unnecessary.
5/3/2010 12:14:32 PM
Basilone was shot in that episode but everything else I've read said he was killed by a mortar?
5/3/2010 1:18:30 PM
^ i read similar too. where he was killed instantly by a mortar hit IRL but last night he was shot and took a bit to die. hollywood theatrics i guess.
5/3/2010 1:21:43 PM
yeah, you probably wouldn't get the same effect if he'd just been split to pieces by mortar fire. You would have probably been shocked, but i can handle the dramatics and blurring of history here.
5/3/2010 1:26:24 PM
Regardless, it doesn't change the fate of Sergeant Basilone. Part of me though wonders if a direct mortar hit would have still provided the necessary impact, perhaps more so given just how immediate and sudden death is on a battlefield like Iwo Jima.
5/3/2010 3:05:42 PM
i enjoyed the imagery in that scene...and the focus on Basilone only to have the camera pan out and see him laying there surrounded by countless other soldiers who may not have had the story that Basilone did but still died as heroes.
5/3/2010 3:23:40 PM
5/3/2010 3:34:51 PM
^i too, read the wiki episode summaries??
5/3/2010 3:36:41 PM
Ha. I actually haven't read the episode summaries, but I did read Sledge's bio though.[Edited on May 3, 2010 at 3:41 PM. Reason : .]
5/3/2010 3:40:21 PM
I think Basilone's courage on the battle field in his last battle was way more epic IRL then they portrayed it in the Pacific. He singlehandedly took out one of those concrete bunkers by flanking it, getting on top and throwing in grenades and explosives. Then he guided a trapped tank through a mine field before being hit by a direct mortar shell that killed him instantly.I suppose the actual death wouldn't have made for great TV.
5/4/2010 5:45:58 PM
As I understand it, that's actually why they stopped letting MoH winners go back into combat. They had a much higher casualty rate than normal soldiers because they'd always act like they had something to prove and would put themselves at risk more readily.
