Yessir...good deal. Those three tabs actually serve to key the syncro hub to the baulk ring (the toothed brass ring), which then applies braking force to the cone on the gear end, thus spinning up the whole shebang before allowing the shift collar to slide over the mating teeth...thus avoiding grinding.Very few transmissions actually slide a gear into mesh when changing, though most reverse gears are designed to do so. Most of the time, gearsets are in constant mesh, and are engaged and disengaged via the use of sliding collars, either syncronizing or of straight dog type. Big trucks, Class 8 and larger, and motorcycles use sliding dogs versus syncros. For the big trucks...it's fewer moving parts in a transmission where rotating masses are high, and baulk rings would wear out crazy fast. Motorcycles? Too small to matter much. It's why matching throttle, double-clutching, etc. are required on most big trucks to shift. The Macks I used to drive were built like that.Glad to hear your shit's fixed!

Not so fast gentlemen- a fellow on another forum compared my pics to his pics and noticed that the 5th synchro outer ring may be on backwards (no bevel displayed on mine)His:Mine:My question is: Is that part symetrical- meaning if installed backwards could it be possible for 5th to work at all? Does the outer ring come in a rebuild kit? I only ask because if not, perhaps my outer ring is an aftermarket rebuild part and does not have the bevel that the original ring came with. Otherwise I would have to think that the chamfer I saw on the snap ring was wear from the initial failure and not by design- meaning that the root cause would be the outer ring installed backwards is a problem for hot rod powershifting your NV4500... and before I do any serious mods I should flip the ring (maybe replace it) and replace that cracked shift fork.[Edited on November 17, 2009 at 5:48 PM. It's very likely that the chamfer is by design, as it is of a lot of benefit when assembling the motherfucker. I never spread that style snapring more than absolutely necessary, and that chamfer makes it easier to slide over the end of the shaft. That snapring is HARD; wearing a chamfer in it is all but impossible. The shaft usually galls first.

Well I know one way to find out, but just getting 5th back for the cost of 2 gallons of gear oil feels pretty good right now. I may see if Capital can get me the shift fork, roll pins, outer ring and snap ring for a reasonable price and just replace it all to be on the safe side.Do you know if there is a replaceable bushing in the shifter on these? I would like to tighten it up a little.
11/17/2009 8:38:46 PM
BD short throw kit
11/17/2009 8:48:55 PM
I can't remember about the bushing; I don't think there is. It's been quite a few years since I had the shifter out on one of those. It's a nice little arrangement; the gearstick is held into its socket with a quarter turning camlock. Spring loaded and a bitch to put back in without the right tool.
11/17/2009 9:48:01 PM
BTW...who the fuck cares about tightening the shifter on one of those? A little slop gives it that big rig feel. And there ain't nothin' better, sir. Nothin' at all.
11/17/2009 9:54:55 PM
HANDSHAKIN'
11/17/2009 10:26:13 PM
With its 2ft shifter its gonna always feel like a big rig, but I would like to teach my wife how to drive it and it helps when the shits not worn out.
11/18/2009 1:19:36 AM
OK so add to the list new serp belt and transmission fluid. New tail lamps are on the way, as are new universal joints and once I figure out how to get the two driveshaft sections apart I am gonna replace the center support bearing too. So far I have about $6K in the truck.
11/18/2009 11:45:17 AM
not bad. i've always wanted to have a big ass truck again. had a 3500 for a while

11/18/2009 7:08:19 PM
I've got 6' of 5" laying in the basement, as well as a 32" long mitre cut stack, 6" 5" inlet. also have one 5" "big-end to big-end" 360deg clamp

11/18/2009 10:10:37 PM
^^ I doubt it^ yeah bring the pipe and the lens. You guys need anything for your trucks? There are 4 in the LKQ you-pull-it yard 10 minutes from here. The pickin is getting a little slim but they had some good parts here and there.

joey needs a radio, ac compressor, headliner, all kinds of shit[Edited on November 18, 2009 at 10:16 PM. Reason : ]
11/18/2009 10:16:08 PM
His headliner falling down? Thats an easy fix, hell i got the material here and we can get in the zone for the glue. My radio is same as a Caravan, there are a ton of those out there. there are AC compressors on a couple of those trucks but they are V8s. [Edited on November 18, 2009 at 10:18 PM. Reason : ...]

adam's making funi removed the A/C system from the firewall forward - on purpose
11/18/2009 10:21:13 PM
Well theres no shame in a Caravan cassette player, playerAnd I am serious about the headliner, they are easier than most people think and really easy on a std cab pickup.
11/18/2009 10:28:00 PM
check with majestic muffler on south saunders, they did the exhuast work for our big state trucks, also brakes inc and fleetpride should have some on the shelf
11/18/2009 10:38:04 PM

11/27/2009 1:52:20 PM

11/30/2009 12:45:21 AM

12/3/2009 9:36:57 AM
thats right!my missing drivers door badge is missing no more I think there may be water ingress at the cab lamps, and its travelling down the A pillar trim... which happens to be where the fuse panel is!!
12/3/2009 9:01:02 PM
I messed up and reset the trip too early, but I am getting at least 16MPG
12/3/2009 11:15:06 PM
OK MORE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMSI got a call to move 3 trucks from Apex to the dirty D and hooked up the trailer this morning. Left the neighborhood, 1st, 2nd, 3rd holy shit it feels like the driveshaft just fell out. Pull over on the shoulder and even sitting still in neutral its still making a hell of a noise, put the clutch in and it goes away, clutch out its back (even in neutral). Limp it back to the house and here it sits.I am not sure if the part of the clutch came apart and is being slung around in the bellhousing or if some other retainer in the transmission came apart or if something else in the trans just plain broke but something is majorly fucked up this time.
