^An apt start to page 5.Speaking of 5, what do you people prefer to slot into your level 5 mage spells?Usually I just fill it with a Cloudkill or two with plenty of Breach spells. It's just such a good anti-caster spell that you can hardly afford to put anything else in there if you're expecting to fight more than one decent mage before resting. I'm speaking 2.5e, here, just to clarify.[Edited on October 28, 2009 at 12:34 AM. Reason : .]

^From what I can tell, half of Frosh's posts have been inter-mixed made up bullshit from different editions of different games. Could be wrong, though, I never played PnP.Feel free to just make up some more shit that sounds fantasy-game-esque. Then we can even pretend to berate you for getting it wrong.

i'm thinking about switching to a beastmaster ranger. obviously i get the added bonus of having a loyal beast companion, so i won't need anyone else to help with flanking. but i would have to give up the prime shot class feature, and i can't use the archer fighting style or the two-blade fighting style. what do you guys think?

alright i think i'm gonna choose that class then. i can choose a beast from the following categories: bear, boar, cat, lizard, raptor, serpent, spider or wolf. these aren't the specific beasts themselves though. for instance, a beastmaster who hails from a swampy region and chooses a lizard companion might end up with a crocodile. one who chooses a lizard from a different region may have a monitor lizard or drake. i must choose carefully which beast i want to accompany me. thoughts?
11/3/2009 4:56:47 PM
^that sounds pretty badass actually, do beastmasters have the ability to CC wild beasts aswell?
11/3/2009 5:09:47 PM
not sure. i can dismiss a beast any time i want, but apparently it's not easy to gain another beast companion. i will have to look into this.

We started up the campaign again this past Sunday. Our divine characters (deva avenger, dragonborn cleric) played noticeably differently since our DM let the players use options from Divine Power, which came out in the interim. Fair's fair, since we martial types (human fighter, half-orc rogue) got Martial Power and the arcane guy (gnome sorcerer) got Arcane Power.Play was quite slow. Most of us had forgotten a lot of our situational bonuses and whatnot, plus the last encounter was fought on mostly difficult terrain against enemies that could inflict the dazed condition. We started tracking the encounter data (e.g. remaining hit points for monsters) over Google Wave, which I think worked nicely.

^^ nice bump. thread brings the lols.
3/5/2010 9:57:13 AM
i've always wondered why some people choose to play as a gnome or a swarf sorceror/mage/what have you. aren't they less effective at using magic as humans or elves, or am i mistaken?
3/5/2010 1:38:43 PM
Speaking only about D&D 4th Edition, the only thing that makes one race less effective than another for a particular class are that race's ability bonuses. It's not really that one race is less effective as much as it is that some races are more effective, if that makes sense.Wizards benefit from having a high Intelligence score, for instance. Eladrin get a bonus to Intelligence, while goliaths don't. Your average eladrin is likely to have a higher Intelligence than your average goliath, but that doesn't mean there aren't any goliath wizards, or even that any given eladrin is a more skillful wizard than a goliath. In some settings for some games, like the video game Dragon Age: Origins, dwarves can't use magic at all. That's not a constant thing, though. Those are Dragon Age dwarves, not D&D dwarves.[Edited on March 5, 2010 at 2:07 PM. Reason : ...]

Yesterday's session had us trouncing the ghost of a powerful witch. Neat encounter. After being summoned into a magic circle, she dragged us all into the Shadowfell, and the earth split into floating islands. We were jumping from island to island as she phased around. Easy fight in the end, but fun.We made our way after that to the ruined keep of Lord Crest. We were ambushed in the courtyard by a gang of trolls and a frickin' fen hydra. That fight would've been hard as balls (regenerating trolls, hydra with reach and multiple attacks) had it not been for a gimme acid property he added to the avenger's sword (long story). The acid nullified the trolls' regen, and they were toast. We should hit level 11 by the end of the next session. Paragon tier! I'm going adroit explorer from PHB2. Ought to be a hoot. Need to decide on a feat, though.
3/15/2010 1:03:31 PM
We managed to fight our way through the ruined keep and discovered Lord Crest's terrible secret. We also hit 11th level! I'm definitely going for adroit explorer, but I'm on the fence about feat choices. I'm thinking of retraining Shield Push (which I hardly ever remember to use) for Weapon Expertise and taking Paragon Defenses for my new feat. Arguably boring—+1 feat bonus to attacks with heavy blades and +1 to my non-AC defenses—but useful.Any input?

3/23/2010 12:36:10 PM
I haven't posted about the D&D game in a while, but it's still going strong. We're into paragon-tier play now, level 12. One of our players is on a cruise, so we're playing an interlude with different characters at level 5. I'm playing a human swordmage. There is a big, dumb debate on message boards about whether a swordmage using a longsword should be able to attack with it two-handed for the bonus damage then switch back to using it one-handed to keep his AC bonus. The longsword has the Versatile property, which means (in my case) that it does an extra +1 damage when used two-handed. Switching your grip on a Versatile weapon is a free action, which means you can do it at any time, even when it's not your turn. You can also take multiple free actions in a round.Swordmages have a class feature called Swordmage Warding that give them a +1 bonus to AC. The bonus goes up to +3 if they are wielding a light or heavy blade in one hand and nothing in their other hand.So a swordmage should be able to attack with a two-handed grip for the +1 damage then switch back to one hand before the end of his turn (or he is next attacked) to get his additional +2 AC back. Some knuckleheads call this "gaming the system," but I disagree. We're talking about +1 damage, which is not huge. Plus, it would only apply to attacks with the Weapon keyword, right? I think most of the swordmage's powers have the Implement keyword.
5/17/2010 9:47:03 AM
It is gaming the system, but thems the rules. Up to the GM or wizards to fix itThe reason for warding's existance is to have you trade off between higher AC or higher damage, using a versatile weapon obv. destroys that balance. If I were the GM i'd say any swordmage using a versatile wep gets their AC bonus set to +2 regardless of grip. Its a fair compromise and makes sense in a way (a versatile weapon is an ok one hand and an ok 2 hand, but not as good as a specific 1h or 2h).
5/17/2010 9:59:55 AM
I disagree that getting an extra +1 to damage on the attack destroys balance. The swordmage would still have his lowered AC against readied attacks and attacks granted by immediate actions.
5/17/2010 10:03:45 AM
Then whats the point of the -2AC when using it as a 2H? A sure sign of abuse of game mechanics is when you have to micromanage an ability at the start/end of every turn. yes yes, its legal by the rules but its not in the spirit of the game. The compromise of the +2AC limit for versatile weps makes it a trade off of 1ac for 1damage and removes the need to call out changing your grip at the start and end of every round. 4e is all about quick combat and everyone hates you for slowing it down with some garbage ass min maxing.
5/17/2010 10:12:20 AM
The point is that if a swordmage really wants to use a two-handed weapon for higher damage, like the greatsword for a d10 instead of the longsword's d8, he has to sacrifice. That makes sense when you're talking about always rolling a bigger die, which means always rolling MORE bigger dice when hitting with powers that do multiple weapon dice in damage. That is not the case with a versatile one-handed weapon. We are talking about +1, period.Besides, there is no slowdown in saying, "I use two hands for this attack," then after resolving, "I switch back to one hand." It's not like there's an extra roll. It would only apply to attacks with the Weapon keyword anyway.
