Knocked out my power. Hopefully it'll come back on today.

I'm posting up from the mall, where I escaped to find food and a/c

didn't lose power at my place in ballston, but i tried to pick up a pair of pants that were being tailored at a place on 29 about 1.5 miles away, and all the stop lights and stores were closed on that road, including the one where i had to get my pants. now i have to go to san diego for 3 months on monday and get one of my roommates to ship them to me. damn storm

i drove down to NC yesterday afternoon and places as far south as stafford didn't have power. it was bad.

i would go if i wasn't in san diego for the next month. buffalo billiards is fine when we get that room reserved for nc state games. it's isolated and has its own bar. plus, since there's so many other alumni groups in DC that have bars staked out, we kind of have to take what we can get. and more people make it to the game watches at buffalo billiards because it's much easier to get to than the saturday game watches at union jack's in ballston.

not sure if any of you are beer geeks, but cantillon zwanze day is december 1 and churchkey at logan circle will be one of 16 bars in the US getting a keg and will probably have some other cool beers that are difficult to come by. i don't know if they do it this way every year, but last year they did a simultaneous worldwide tapping.

i don't know how bad it was. be careful though. either last year or the year before there were a lot of shootings on halloween, and i think 2 of them were around M street/georgetown. i don't know that every halloween is like that, but events like this tend to attract opportunistic scum.

commuting from silver spring to vienna via metro will suck ass and won't be cheap. i commuted from vienna to crystal city for a month when i first lived here. it's about 45 minutes on the metro alone, which isn't too bad, but you might want to look for a place somewhere in arlington or in falls church on the orange line. if night life is important to you then i'd recommend arlington just so you're more convenient to bars (though there aren't many good ones in arlington) and are closer to DC if you want to go out there. i've lived in ballston for the last 2 years. i really like the area, but i'm probably going to be moving to DC within the next year.

crystal city is fucking garbage. if you want good spots, check out court house, rosslyn, and bolston - all on metro and in VA (better taxes)

^, ^^^i agree. Anywhere along Rosslyn-Ballston corridor will be much more fun than Crystal City. If you don't go out as much and need more space, you can be between Ballston and Courhouse. If you will be working in Vienna, might as well be on the same metro line. Your wife's drive to Ft. Meade is gonna suck either way. Might want to check how far is your office/jobsite from the Vienna metro station. Most offices are not exactly walking distance, and you'd have to catch the bus. At that point, assuming you are keeping your car, it is almost easier to drive from Arlington to Vienna, since you are sort of going against the traffic (traffic will still suck though)

From Silver Spring her commute will be much better, but yours will become much worse. Silver spring has come a long way in the last decade or so, but it is still not as lively as north Arlington or some of the DC proper neighborhoods.

Difficult situation for the two of you. You could look into areas like Rockville, but that commute is going to be utter hell for you. Bethesda may be another good alternative. Again, a crappy commute for both, but it won't be nearly as bad as others. Neighborhood isn't bad either.

we ended up getting a place a few minutes walk from the silver spring metro. we wanted to go further into the city, but the need to make sure she had a decent commute to ft. meade kept us out of the downtown area. hopefully she catches on with SAIC or a different "government agency" that would allow us to upgrade next year. we'll move in Feb. gonna miss living on the bay, but being a short metro ride from downtown will be great
