the instinct can be activated on SERO plans now.i'm thoroughly enjoying the pre so far. those of you with battery life complaints might want to stop by a service center and have yours tested. apparently there have been some bad ones out of the box. also, anyone looking to purchase a new pre around raleigh, the store on the corner of atlantic/millbrook has a few in stock.[Edited on June 11, 2009 at 1:02 AM. Reason : oh, and if you brick your pre doing a software update or "other" things http://www.palm.com/rom will fix it]
6/11/2009 1:00:34 AM
^where did you get that information? Are you referring to the new "Everything Plus" accounts or the old 29.99 and 49.99 plans? Not that I would activate that pos, I just couldn't find anywhere that gave the thumbs up.

i really want someone to come out with a tethering solution so i can get one for my wife and play with it more - that and fix the ridiculous contacts deal where everyone in the world is a contact
6/11/2009 6:27:19 PM
got my palm pre today it's still a first generation device, but I'm loving it so farI think it's stupid to compare the numbers of apps in palms brand new app catalog to apple's app store as if those are static numbers. apple has a lot more dev for it and palm will catch up, not to mention that tons of the apps in apple's app store are shit
6/13/2009 8:37:10 PM
^ youre right it's a dumb comparison now, but I don't see Palm catching up, and you can certainly expect a ton of garbage to be in the Palm app store too.

I'd blow that shit up if i was Apple.
6/17/2009 3:32:44 PM
so, dumb question... if i bought the pre, would it be unable to be activated by sprint (since I have SERO)? or can i just not get it from sprint/at any of their discounts?
6/21/2009 2:28:25 AM
^You can't even buy the Pre on the old $30 SERO plan. The activation system forces you to change to a compatible plan before even tendering out.
6/21/2009 12:29:44 PM
Yeah, I had a lady from iCare on the line last year before the Instinct launch that had the power to do just about anything and did a great job convincing me there was absolutely no way to force the phone to be activated on the SERO plan. Which in hindsight was a blessing, because the Instinct is such a pos.I called her back months later after the SERO debacle and she was able to override the system to change my FF500 to FF1250, so I'm pretty sure the only way to get what you're after would be to switch to an SEP plan and get someone to severely discount it to match the price of the old SERO. (good luck)as far was what ^ said, that may or may not be 100% true. I think I've read instances where an idiot rep in telesales(or employee sales), or eCare has sold some SERO peeps the Pre without knowing (or telling?) them that it wouldn't activate.[Edited on June 21, 2009 at 1:14 PM. dammit. a cool phone isn't worth the $texas i save on monthly bills. $40 with insurance FTW.

Getting closer ...Homebrewed Apps for Non-Rooted Deviceshttp://www.precentral.net/homebrewed-apps-coming-non-rooted-devices
6/21/2009 10:53:10 PM
^^^what dmidkiff posted is most definitely true, and out of anyone posting in here he's likely the resident authority on the subject. even direct/indirect employee accounts are restricted in how any personal pres can be activated. i'd be highly suspect of anyone saying otherwise.as for the instinct, i'll say again that it most certainly can be activated on the old SERO plans. "technically" it's not allowed, but it can be done fairly easily if you're grandfathered in on an old plan. i'd also be curious to know what classifies it as a pos? touch panel/digitizer failures have been somewhat common on the m800 (seemingly not an issue with the m810), but other than that it's a pretty solid unit for a full touch device with all of the current software/firmware updates.[Edited on June 21, 2009 at 11:26 PM. 6/21/2009 11:25:56 PM
The SERO activation dilemma you're describing right now with the Pre, is how the Instinct was on launch. I'm sure now it's not difficult at all to get it put on your plan. It's a POS compared to what I was actually looking for in a phone (iCare gave me a Mogul when I wanted the Instinct). It just failed to meet my expectations and such.I'm not discrediting dmidkiff by any means, but I truly hope that small egostroke you tossed him is warranted. I would have to assume he actually resides somewhere higher in the chain of command than the ignorant (no offense) sales monkeys at the retail store. Hell, even the techs rarely know enough to transfer contacts without bricking both devices. That said, I was simply saying, there's been logs of SERO customers given false information before launch and being sold Palm Pres through chatting, telesales, and eCare regardless of the activation outcomes. "Tendering out" has to make me assume he works at one of the retail stores, which is completely understandable as to how it would be impossible to purchase one there at your reduced rate.PS: I also know the Blackberrys can be "technically" added to a voice only SERO FF with a bit of social engineering, but I was told the system rejected the Instinct on launch, but some time afterward it appears they let it through now./2c

And go...http://www.precentral.net/right-now-install-homebrew-appSDK? We don't need no stinkin' SDK.
6/22/2009 10:28:56 AM
Well, I have the HTC Touch and the screen has lost a lot of it's responsiveness, the power button on the top is acting up, blah blah blah.I would be willing to pay to upgrade to a Pre, but otherwise, I guess I'm just looking to get the Diamond otherwise, through the Equipment Protection plan. I've had enough refurbished HTC Touch replacements as it is.

I've had the Pre for a couple weeks now and love it. I however don't know much about the Apps and downloads...so how do I get the NES emulator?
6/28/2009 7:57:06 PM
it's possible to install homebrew apps on the pre at the moment, but there are some serious limitations (you can't uninstall anything, for one)and I agree that right now the app catalog is a little bare, but this phone is what, 3 weeks out of launch? the development will be there, it just takes a little time
6/28/2009 9:25:24 PM
as of 1.04 you can no longer install homebrew apps - until it's cracked again at least...

I think i just found a flaw in the Pre's marketing. I'm at my in-laws house, and a Pre commercial came on last night. I think it was a 30-second version of this onehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Hk8IzdwYEAMy mother-in-law was watching, and my father-in-law was nodding off. But my MIL was so intrigued by people in orange, she literally didn't even notice the phone. Every time the orange people came on, she would keep trying to wake my F-I-L to get him to see it. Then at the end of the commercial, I said something about the Pre, and she said "what's that," and I said "the commercial for the phone we just saw." She responded "what phone?" and I said "the commercial we just saw - that was a new phone, the Palm Pre." and she said, "like.... a Palm Pilot?" and I was like, "yeah..... kind of..... but newer." or, maybe that's just a flaw in my mother-in-law
6/30/2009 5:42:44 PM
^lol...did they get the same ad agency that Toyota used for the Prius to make that? And I literally barely saw anything about the phone and what it can do. I am not impressed by that commercial.
6/30/2009 5:50:08 PM
yeah, i mean, it's amazing that it took so many years for a company to come out and do commercials that do nothing but showing people using the product they're trying to sell, and now that Apple is doing just that, no other company is going to copy them for fear of being accused of copying Apple.
6/30/2009 6:10:15 PM
^well their UI does have characteristics of an iPhone which works well (the iPhone UI that is...never used the Pre UI in person before). So really there is no point in re-inventing the wheel or fixing what already works. It doesn't have to be exactly the same but the basic idea is to demonstrate your product as best you can and not to demonstrate how much money you have to spend on extravagant marketing.

Tethering is a go ...http://forums.precentral.net/web-os-development/191082-tethered-pre-without-any-apps-ssh-scripts.htmlAlso, they are pushing the SDK out to more and more people who signed up (myself included) and homebrew apps are already appearing. A simple method of installing them by anyone is currently under investigation. Good stuff.
