Is there any way to adjust audio properties such as an EQ on the taskbar?I got several people at work to seriously consider getting netbooks
1/26/2009 6:00:47 AM
So what's the going consensus on the best one to buy?
1/26/2009 10:57:46 PM
Samsung NC10 IMO. Best all round, but pricey at $475. 10/10http://www.trustedreviews.com/notebooks/review/2008/11/17/Samsung-NC10---10-2in-Netbook/p1
1/26/2009 11:42:54 PM
They're 450 now on newegg and amazon.

yeah, it's a netbook.netbooks are small, cheap computers meant for looking shit up on the internet. not for playing games or playing dj. the sound cards are cheap, the video cards aren't anything special. stop trying to make it into something it's not.sorry, it's not just you. i keep reading articles, comments, etc about people with similar complaints. i don't know how people are misunderstanding the "net" part of the name.

The audio quality on my Asus 1000HA is fine. It's just like any other laptop I've ever used. I don't see any reason that you couldn't use it to play mp3s into a PA system for DJ purposes.

Ugh, my NC10 just took a huge spill onto the pavement. If anyone is wondering about durability, they appear to be able to take at least a couple of 3 foot drops. She's all beat up on the corner now. ^Or add a USB soundcard.[Edited on January 29, 2009 at 2:18 PM. Reason : ,]

sounds like someone pre-amped it too high from the computer and it destroyed the sound. If you use the netbook as a line-output, and them amp it, it should be fine.

neodata, were you able to get all of the drivers and utilities to work under Win7 ?
2/2/2009 9:20:59 AM
Haven't actually had time to install windows 7 yet. Senior design and all that jazz. I'm sure i'll get around to it soon.
2/2/2009 1:44:42 PM
i've got a dell mini, it works great as a laptop. win7 / vista drivers work great. haven't had any issues related to compatability.the sleep and hibernate functions are screwy though.
2/2/2009 2:01:33 PM
i bought 2gb of RAM for my dell mini9 last week and last night took it over to my parents' to compare it to my mom's that she got for valentine's day (same specs as mine). i opened several programs at the same time, switching between programs is faster, opening programs is faster, webpages are a little faster. not a HUGE difference but for $23 it was worth it.

I'm thinking about getting the Dell Mini 9. You can get them for 185 right now, shipped with ubuntu. I can upgrade the RAM to 2g and the SSD to 32G for $120. I would probably just wipe the ubuntu and use windows 7 though.

Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Netbook: Intel Atom 1.6 GHz, 512MB DDR2, 4GB SSD, Ubuntu Linux $185 ($178 w/ DPA) http://www.slickdeals.net/permadeal/18605/Dell-Inspiron-Mini-9-Netbook-Intel-Atom-1-6-GHz--512MB-DDR2--4GB-SSD--Ubuntu-Linux-185-178-w-DPA
2/27/2009 3:16:19 PM
anybody know where I can see a Dell mini 9 IRL? like best buy or something like that.
2/27/2009 5:05:23 PM
^ You might try one of the mall kiosks. At best buy you can see about 3-4 different brands of netbooks, just not Dell's.
2/27/2009 5:43:06 PM
it pains me that these shits were like $500+ in July/August
2/27/2009 5:46:49 PM
^^^They have them at *most* BestBuy stores.Roomate just bought one. Mini9 base + 2gb memory upgrade + 16gb SSD = 265 total
2/27/2009 6:36:04 PM
$185 deal is gone
2/28/2009 11:01:37 AM
I think I'm going to order the new Asus 1000HE that just came out. its $375 at neweggUp to 9.5 hours battery life allows for "Whole Day Computing"faster cpu (N280 1.66ghz 667mhz bus)160GB disk10.0" screen
2/28/2009 1:01:57 PM
I stopped by best buy and played around with a 8.9" ASUS today so I don't think the keyboard size will be an issue, even with my fat fingers. I'm so pissed I let that deal go by. Do you guys think it will pop up again anytime soon?
2/28/2009 3:53:58 PM
So I bought the mini 9, I'm upgrading to 32GB ssd and 2GB ram. I ordered it with Ubuntu and I'm trying to decide if I want to keep Ubuntu or go to Windows 7. I have some experience with Linux so it doesn't scare me, but I've been using windows products forever. How much slower will windows 7(w/ anti virus) run than ubuntu?
3/2/2009 3:07:33 PM
Do you have a reason not to use Ubuntu? I run Ubuntu on my Asus 1000HA and I've been really happy. Windows wouldn't give me any functionality that I want that I don't already have with Ubuntu.
3/2/2009 4:04:30 PM
would i have a problem with vpn or remote desktop?
3/2/2009 4:22:31 PM
no.
3/2/2009 4:23:40 PM
If I can get chrome to work I should be fine.
3/2/2009 4:45:42 PM
^ currently, Chrome is for windows only.
3/2/2009 4:48:02 PM
Google needs to get to work then.
3/2/2009 4:51:54 PM
^ It's currently in development according to google.http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en/linux.html
3/2/2009 4:56:18 PM
Has anyone tried putting photoshop on their netbook? I just need an application to crop and do simple alterations with photos. I'm thinking photoshop should run fine as long as i'm not working with large raw files or complex filters.
3/3/2009 4:27:02 PM
^mspaint
3/3/2009 4:34:48 PM
old ms paint is awful for cropping.
3/3/2009 4:44:53 PM
Yeah i've never been able to crop a picture in paint. Can't zoom in/out on things (can go 100% and above, but not under 100%)
3/3/2009 4:55:43 PM
Photoshop will run on netbooks but the screen hardly gives you enough pixel area to do any real work. It would work well for simple things if you pushed the UI to an external monitor.
3/3/2009 5:02:17 PM
I mean Picasa would be a lot better for simple stuff on a netbooksimple clean interface
3/4/2009 11:25:19 AM
GIMP is another option, relatively low footprint
3/4/2009 2:26:09 PM
I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and get an EEE 1000HA. ♥ Asus!
3/9/2009 11:32:10 AM
^ Get the newer iteration with wireless-N.
3/9/2009 12:17:41 PM
An interesting point. Is Obsidian Online worth it to spend $40-50 less than Newegg for, say, the 1002HE?
3/9/2009 2:47:59 PM
^ I've never heard of them, but that doesn't mean they're bad.
3/9/2009 2:52:50 PM
I figured $429 (+ s/h) was a little steeper than I liked, so I found OO via Google shopping for $389 w/ free shipping.
3/9/2009 2:55:51 PM
Dell Mini 9 is back on sale today. $200 for Mini 9n with linux, 8GB SSD, 512MB RAM.
3/24/2009 9:07:16 AM
my mini9 arrived today
3/24/2009 12:47:41 PM
i'm going to get PDAnet to use my verizon motoq9c as a modem (could do it w/o the software, but costs an additional $15/month). i dont know if it'll work but we'll see. it'd be awesome to be able to use my mini9 in the car.
3/24/2009 3:23:22 PM
pdanet works great with my samsung nc10. Driving from Charlotte to Raleigh i only had to reconnect maybe 3 times.
3/24/2009 3:26:05 PM
did you buy it or obtain it some other way?
3/24/2009 4:50:30 PM
