"Sources tell TSN the Tampa Bay Lightning are investigating legal grounds for withholding the remainder of Barry Melrose's contract with the team.

Melrose's assessment of rookie forward Steven Stamkos is the basis for the investigation.

The recently fired Lightning head coach said, "Steven is not ready for the NHL," as part of an interview on a Toronto morning radio show.

Stamkos has been a key component in Tampa's marketing campaign since the Lightning drafted the 18-year-old forward first overall in last summers NHL Entry Draft and according to sources, the Lightning fear Melrose's comment may hinder Stamkos's marketing impact.

The dispute remains in the discussion stage and the team has not filed for breach of contract with the National Hockey League."

We should make Barry the coach for the Tampa Bay game at Tampa. Just one game, that's all.

"Jose Theodore is, in fact, hurt. He is day-to-day with a hip flexor. I'm not sure when this injury happened.

The Caps have summoned Simeon Varlamov from Hershey and he hopes to arrive from Houston in time to be on the Caps' bench by the second period. He'll backup Brent Johnson. Eventually.

So who's going to be the other goalie? Why it's going to be web producer Brett Leonhardt. You may remember him from my chat this afternoon.

The team has received permission from the NHL to have Brett take warmups and sit on the bench until Varlamov is ready. Leonhardt, by the way, had to sign an amateur tryout contract to be eligible to do this. The contract is in central registry as we speak."

Yet another dreaded Devils v. Rangers game tonight. Ugh. But wait! There may be a chance after all. The Devils are enjoying an 8-2 L10 while the Rangers (formally designated the Rags) have slumped to just 5-5. For the past season and change the Rangers have had our number but maybe, just maybe we can forget what team is on the other bench and play Devils hockey that has kept us competitive in our division despite the absence of Marty. Too bad this game isn't being played tomorrow night. I could rest easy knowing that Mr. Saturday Night, Zach Parise, would come through and win it for us even if it meant OT.

Fire everyone.

This is ridiculous. The Rangers have allowed 10 shorthanded goals this year.

Meanwhile they've only allowed 12 goals on the penalty kill.

I mean, what the fuck.

Real tough break for the Jackets. Derick Brassard is out for the season after separating his shoulder in a fight. This is why you don't want your star players fighting...

It's going to be interesting to see Justin Pogge get his first NHL start tonight as the Leafs play the Thrashers. His AHL numbers this year aren't stellar: 10-9-3 record, 2.86 GAA and .890 save percentage.

Toskala, on the other hand... Being bent over by DALLAS to the tune of 7 goals before the halfway point of the game.

^I watched Canada rout Slovakia 7-0 in their final pre-tournament exhibition game. Tavares scored a ridiculous goal where he juggled the puck with his stick and then knocked it out of mid-air into the net. Canada looks like a lock for gold. again.

""It's plain and simple," St. Louis said, "there's not enough guys that want to make a difference, they're clock killers, that's all it is. I'm (expletive deleted) fed up. I don't think there's enough guys who really want to win. Yeah, we say the right things, but (expletive deleted) that," St. Louis fumed.

"What's winning?" he added. "It's being aware of every flipping play that matters, especially now, when you're in a hole. When you're six or seven games over .500 and everything is rosy, you can make mistakes. It happens, you can live with it. But right now, when we're in the situation we are, it's embarrassing.""

Tampa Bay fans certainly can't complain that they aren't being entertained this year. It's a damn soap opera down there.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/capitalsinsider/2008/12/ovechkin_interview_things_he_h_1.html#more

"Nothing really bothers me," says Alexander in response to the question if there is something about life in America that he does not like. "What is there to be bothered about? I spend most of my time with the other Russian guys... Well, maybe the drivers. The way they drive here, you could write a book about it!"

Too slow?

"Oh yes! There are drivers here with the capital D! In Russia they would simply get shot. Let's say you are driving on an empty two-lane road. Any fool knows the left lane is the fast one! But here they don't get it at all. Two of them will get next to each other and just keep going like that: nobody in front of them and a traffic jam behind. Why, why would you drive slowly in the left lane? Who knows. They just do it."

And what are the things that you like the most about living here?

"I have never been lied to here. Take my relationship with the team, for example. Everything they promise me, they always do it. It never happens that they tell you something and then forget. I have never before seen such professional relationship anywhere."

Is there anything you miss the most?

"The pace of life in Moscow. When I come there, I don't even have the time to relax. I would get home at four in the morning, sleep for four hours and - back in the saddle again. Hanging out, partying... What do you expect? If a guy toils without rest for nine months, what should he do: come home and sit in front of the TV with a bottle of water and potato chips and watch the news?"

Is Backstrom your best friend on the team?

"No, my closest friend is Semin."

At first sight he doesn't seem like you at all.

"Only outsiders think that, those who don't know him well. Actually, it really is an open question which one of us is more "like me." Sema is a really fun guy to hang out with, he always gets into adventures... Once, in San Jose, we messed up a hotel room, had to pay a hundred dollars extra for it. There were bananas everywhere, we were throwing the peel at each other. Had a pillow fight, destroyed all the pillows. Poured Coca-Cola all over the floor. "

What is the question from the media that you are most tired of?

"It used to be "Compare yourself with Crosby." Now it's "Compare yourself with Malkin." Actually, I have to do two or three interviews every day and almost always they ask me the same things. I could even write all the standard questions on a piece of paper and just hand it out to the journalists."

Staying with the subject, could you talk about your relationship with Malkin? There are rumors of all but a war between you two.

"No, there is no war and everything that was between us is in the past. I just think that he was wrong in acting like he did. He said things that shouldn't have been said. I won't go into it in detail."

Do you mean your confrontation with his agent Ushakov? Malkin's words in the media that the fight indeed took place?

"Yes, I won't go further into it. He shouldn't have said it."

If you and Malkin ever got into a fight on the ice - who would win?

"Whoever landed the first punch. But fighting is not my calling. And really, I don't see any rivalry between myself and Malkin. Or between myself and Crosby. And now they are adding Semin to our threesome too. There is nothing of that sort: we just play, get our points, someone is in front, someone is second... Of course, a headline like "Ovechkin Versus Malkin" catches the eye, but I don't see any reason to pour gasoline onto the fire."

Of all the players you have met on the ice, which one is the most unpleasant?

"Probably (the ex-Penguin, now a Senator) Jarkko Ruutu. He is the dirtiest player and does everything in an underhanded way. Just a rat running around..."

I have heard the team's fighter Donald Brashear talking to you guys in Russian. Are you teaching him?

"He does it himself, with a translator in his cell phone. He is going to come to Moscow this summer, so he is getting ready. As a matter of fact, he mostly hangs out with us, the Russians."

There are four of you Russian guys - two youngsters and two old ones. How do you get along?

"We try to get (the old guys) into the active lifestyle. Viktor (Kozlov) is our designated "target." We always try to get at him. But sometimes Fedorov gets it from us too. Actually, they try to always agree with us and never argue."

Would you like to tell an Ovechkin New Year's story?

"You mean something funny? Well... So, we are arriving in Turin for the Olympics... No, let's not do this one. Actually, it's very hard to find something that is fit to print in a newspaper."

You lead an interesting life.

"In turth, what they write about me is much more interesting than how I live... They had written that in Beijing (at the Olympics) I got drunk and totally destroyed a hotel room... (And) the Russian press has made me into such a ladies' man... As soon as I arrive in Moscow, go to a party and sit down with somebody at the same table, they will immediately write about Ovechkin's new romance. So, I try not to go with anyone or only to go with (male) friends. So they will wind up thinking that I am... All right, that's enough about that."

Is this why you offended Miss Virginia after one of the home games, refusing to have a picture taken with her?

"Ah, it's nothing. I didn't even see her. I just heard someone saying something to me about a Miss Virginia, so I said that our girls are better and left."
