as far as the cheese goes, i kinda view hummus as a vegan cheese. esp heated it reminds me a lot of melted cheese. i take some soy protein sometimes (in smoothies and soy yogurt and stuff), but prob not as often as i should. also eat a lot of nuts, whole wheat, etc...
7/19/2008 1:47:40 PM
I actually don't take any supplements.
7/19/2008 8:20:10 PM
just a multi-vitamin (that actually has iron in it too). it's not terribly difficult to get everything you need from food.
7/19/2008 11:44:24 PM
EAT MEAT. IT WILL BE OK, TRUST ME.
7/19/2008 11:44:40 PM
Take that kind of talk to Chit Chat.

hummus is not cheese to me i LOVE hummus, don't get me wrong. but i really REALLY love cheese. all kinds of cheese. so i just can't get over the cheese. plain milk and eggs, yeah. cheese, no. lovey the cheese.
7/20/2008 2:57:46 AM
^i didnt see you tonight did i? that would be really wierd if i did
7/20/2008 2:59:10 AM
^^haha, just for fun one day make a hummus pizza, or a hot hummus rollup, and then tell me it doesn't remind you of cheese pepperjack tofurky also tastes like really great cheese. good for sandwiches. smoked tofurky is great too, but that tastes like turkey, not cheese.
7/20/2008 3:13:13 AM
haha no i mean it may REMIND me of cheese but it isn't cheese. i guess i'll TRY the pepperjack but any cheesy wannabe type stuff i've tried just hasn't done it (and i'm not being picky, i've tried for real )
7/20/2008 3:15:22 AM
I really like the Galaxy brand jalapeno "cheese" slices. I'm not even a vegan, but they sounded tasty so I tried some. They actually melt, and while it's obviously not the same as a piece of genuine cheese, it's not far off from the Kraft singles type cheese. And I don't even usually like that crap, but somehow these got my stamp of approval.
7/20/2008 11:55:22 AM
I bought some FYH Vegan Gourmet Cheddar at Food Lion and it's not too bad. I may make a trip to Whole Foods and try another kind, but so far, I could survive on the FYH kind.
7/20/2008 12:34:48 PM
hey can vegetarians eat shrimp?
7/24/2008 12:19:29 PM
Nope. No seafood. Technically, there is a term for someone who would otherwise eat a vegetarian diet except that they also eat seafood: pescetarian.
7/24/2008 12:21:25 PM
Pescitarian is the term for people who eat seafood but no other meats.[Edited on July 24, 2008 at 12:22 PM. Reason : I am so sick of people saying, "You're allowed to eat fish, you know"]
7/24/2008 12:21:34 PM
is there a term for people that dont eat meat but eat chicken and shrimp?[Edited on July 24, 2008 at 12:23 PM. Reason : seems like a shrimp is so harmless...i dont even consider it "meat"]
7/24/2008 12:23:09 PM
Omnivore
7/24/2008 12:25:08 PM
thats not as exclusive...thats like 90 percent of people
7/24/2008 12:27:11 PM
Yeah. Once you start adding other things, it's definitely back to being an omnivore.
7/24/2008 12:28:32 PM
How many people eat only chicken and shrimp? If they eat seafood and all poultry, then they can just say they don't eat red meat/pork.
7/24/2008 12:29:18 PM
I was going to ask what if the only meat a person ate was chicken. If I could do that then I could start thinking about becoming semi-veggie

While I am truly glad when people decide to cut back on the animals that they eat, I think it's silly to come up with so many different names for diets. I've even heard someone use pollo-vegetarian, which is utterly absurd.
7/24/2008 12:39:54 PM
I would prefer they say that instead of just calling themselves vegetarian and furthering the general confusion over what "vegetarians" really eat.
7/24/2008 1:05:03 PM
i'm just a vagitarian
7/24/2008 1:19:44 PM
^^But by having "vegetarian" still in the name, it leads people to think that vegetarians can eat just about everything. I'd rather them say that they just don't eat red meat/etc. It just seems like they want some special title so that they can sound different without actually doing anything. I'm scared for the day when they start trying to water down the term "vegan". Then I'll really be in trouble.
7/24/2008 2:09:29 PM
I've heard people say crap like "I'm vegan but I eat cheese"
7/24/2008 2:10:48 PM
7/24/2008 2:13:45 PM
^^ I guess I hang out too much on vegan message boards where someone would get brutally attacked for saying something like that.
7/24/2008 2:15:19 PM
haha you hang out on other message boards
7/24/2008 2:17:34 PM
^I don't spend nearly as much time on TWW as you do. Plus, the other board has yummy food.
7/24/2008 2:20:14 PM
well at least you have been posting here more lately

leftyisreal is a ovo-lacto-pisco-pollo-porko-bovo-vegetarian.It's hard for him to find food at restaurants, but at least he has an awesome label to call himself. [Edited on July 27, 2008 at 12:29 AM. Reason : ]
7/27/2008 12:28:01 AM
and, now that I'm labeled... really though, if you'd added a comment about me being really open minded about eating anything vegetarian and cooking vegetarian for you i would have fit in a bit more

Vegan carrot cake for my mom's birthday today.
7/27/2008 1:44:34 PM
happy bday to your mom!
7/27/2008 1:45:13 PM
carrot cake, mmmmmmmm.
7/28/2008 3:59:26 AM
Boba house in g-boro has some tasty vegan carrot cake. I had actually never had carrot cake (vegan or not) ever before theirs though- so I don't know what to compare it too really.Anyhow, I am looking for a light sauce for pasta to use on nights when I don't want to do much. I've been using evoo plus a little basil/oregano (typically over angel hair, linguine, or spaghetti), but I'm bored with it. Any other light sauces y'all like to use?
7/31/2008 5:16:55 PM
what is a "light" sauce? u mean other than tomato paste? my friend makes this pretty good sauce with like asian vinagrette dressing, pine nuts, some green veggies, and garlic that is pretty good.
8/2/2008 4:29:43 PM
I love putting pesto and pine nuts on pasta. It's really simple and yummy.
8/2/2008 6:05:43 PM
^isn't pesto traditionally made with parmesan? I haven't tried making a vegan pesto yet.^^ yea I am basically looking for a tomato-free alternative. I'm bored with tomato sauce (not like I use it much to begin with, but still). I might try that vinaigrette based one this week.
8/2/2008 6:30:27 PM
Yeah, generally pesto has parmesan in it. I'm sure there's some substitutions available, though.
8/2/2008 7:18:39 PM
^^it was a little thin for my tastes, but maybe that is what you're looking for I would still recommend maybe adding something to add a little more flavor, maybe like some of your own spices or something idk, it also might depend on the dressing you choose also of course.
8/2/2008 8:12:58 PM
do they make soy chicken like they do soy burgers?
8/2/2008 8:19:37 PM
Nooch is typically used as a substitute. INGREDIENTS * 1/3 cup pine nuts * 2/3 cup olive oil * 5 cloves garlic * 1/3 cup nutritional yeast * 1 bunch fresh basil leaves * salt and pepper to tasteDIRECTIONS 1. Place the pine nuts in a skillet over medium heat, and cook, stirring constantly, until lightly toasted. 2. Gradually mix the pine nuts, olive oil, garlic, nutritional yeast, and basil in a food processor, and process until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
8/2/2008 11:27:10 PM
^^ Quorn makes the best fake chicken IMO.
8/3/2008 4:25:13 PM
The last time I looked at Quorn, it wasn't vegan. (Which of course doesn't matter to everyone. Just a heads up.)I really like Morningstar's Chikn Strips.
8/3/2008 5:08:46 PM
Yeah, it has egg whites in it.
