i wouldn't consider anything else besides winter place, wv and wintergreen, va if you aren't going to snowshoe

^ not fair!

and wintergreen and winterplace are about as good as you'll get if you don't go to snowshoe.

i drove up to mt. snow in vermont once and of course that was far superior, but also a full day's drive.

Anyone been to Sugar / Beech very recently?

I'm going up there for a few days next week and I'm hoping it's marginally better than ice sheets everywhere.

If you can go on a Monday, Beech has 2 for 1 lift ticket specials. (Excludes holidays of course)

So what is the best place to ski/snowboard in a 5 hour radius of raleigh?

I'm thinking of going as a weekend thing.

5 hours is pretty far for a weekend trip.

but i'd suggest winterplace (about 4 hours) or wintergreen (about 3.5).

5 hours isnt bad for a weekend trip, it'd give you 2 full days on the mountain

5 seems long then.

if you have to work until 430, get home at 5.... at the least, you won't get there until 10. board sat. and sun. morning, leave at 3, get home around 8... that's a loooooooong weekend.

do-able, but rough.

snowshoe isn't much over 5 hours from raleigh if you beat the traffic on I-40 and don't get caught in a storm

I love having 5 mountains with bomb ass resorts within 5 hours of here. 3-7 mile single RUNS aint nothin to mess with. Guess I should learn how to ski now huh?

I'm not quite sure what you guys mean by a long weekend. What would you consider to be a good weekend?

i just meant a busy weekend, where you are driving/snowboarding pretty much start to finish.

i'd be more tired that way.

gah, i'm trying to plan a day trip to Wintergreen or Winterplace tomorrow, stay the night there, and drive back on Sunday.

All the nice cabins and stuff are booked from what I can tell. Anyone know of any decent cabins that less than $200/night? I've found a few but they're all booked.

we are doing the same thing this weekend but staying in a hotel a little ways down the road. it's way cheaper than $200 a night too if you don't mind the 15 or so minute drive.

(i'm not even sure where to be specific since i didn't plan the trip) but check out hotels if that's not out of the question.

Yeah, I was hoping for something a little nicer than Hampton inn or Holiday Inn Express....however, I MAY just become the next Shaun White after staying at the Holiday Inn Express

i got back from winterplace a little while ago and i must say it wasn't all that great.

today was cool because there were about 27 people on the slopes and our group had the snowboard park to ourselves. it was too warm this weekend though so stuff got all slushy and icy and slushy again. but really, what do you expect on the east coast?

overall i had a blast though because it was the first time i've been in a year or so and i was with my buds.

anyone ever been to timberline, wv? whats it like?

i know its smaller than snowshoe, but we're looking at staying up there for free. and its like an hour or so farther than snowshoe, but the lift tickets are cheaper.

so we got back from mammoth last night, got snowed in until 1PM so we had to drive during the superbowl. ridiculous weather the whole time there, lots of snow and wind and lifts were constantly closing and opening. had a great time though.

here's some pictures i took (not a waterproof camera so i only took it out when the snow/wind was low):

^^i've been to timberline once. it wasn't too bad. it's not really comparable to snowshoe as far as fun and amount of trails go, but they do have some nice long runs. if i remember correctly they only have 3 or 4 lifts for all their trails so it got kind of crowded. i know i had a good time though.

Went there for a week in March last year and had a BLAST. With student ID in March it was like $17 for an entire day lift ticket, unreal. For someone who isn't spoiled by snow out west (that's me), it was fantastic. I went with 6 others and we had a crazy good time. Nothing too extreme there, but plenty of slopes, not too packed, a nice lodge, etc.

Bottom line: GO! It's a very well ran place for how cheap the lift tickets are, I was really impressed. But yeah, the drive there is longgg.

On another note: I'm leaving for Banner Elk tonight -- how's Beech/Sugar? (I'm guessing it's bad)

so, 24 hours after leaving dc for denver, after 3 different cities and an overnight in phoenix, i am currently in vail watching it dump snow.

southwest lost my bag (they found it and its en route) cutting my skiing down to 2 days, but thats better than 0

after all the hassle, as i just texted Bobbydigital: im currently drinking $1 PBRs watching the snowfall, and life is good

Nice... I was supposed to be going up to Tahoe again this weekend or next but life got in the way. Too busy @ work to take a personal day or two for the long weekend.

I'm hoping I'll be able to hit the slopes one more time before season is over...

We went to Beech / Sugar this week. Skied one day and it was horrible. It's sad how not snowy it is. Anyone planning to ski in the NC mountains the rest of this season, cancel your trip and save the money. More grass than snow.

some people make the most out of any situation - if you're going skiing in NC, you're probably not going for the killer slopes

that's the way NC always is. you don't plan ski trips in the southeast. it's an exercise in futility.

you see on friday that "hey, Beech/Sugar just got a bunch of snow dumped on them, and/or it's been cold enough for the last week or two that they've built up a decent base with the snowblowers...let's go skiing tomorrow/this weekend."

yeah, long term plans don't usually work out too well in the SE. you've kinda got to just strike while the iron's hot.

well with the two days i had to work with i split on vail and beaver creek. the vail day was cold as balls, so windy that a couple other mountains closed nearby, and waist deep powder blanketing the back bowls...not ideal, but we had fun regardless

second day at bc was one of the best ski days ve ever experienced...right around 30-35, sunny, no wind and a couple inches of loose powder...incredible runs and only ate shit once all day

now if i can just get out of chicago ontime ill be thrilled
