i havent BSOD'ed pre-sp1 vista yet that i recall and that's been a year off and on dual booted with a macbook pro. they won't let me get sp1 off of windows update. TJB627 informed me that it was probably that it didn't recognize the drivers i had (since i had to run some Apple drivers). i guess ole M$ found a way to lock out the Apple ppl a bit. anyone have a link to dl it outside of windows update?
3/24/2008 2:36:10 PM
lol i actually thought they had gotten rid of BSODs with vista, cause i've never actually personally seen a BSOD on vista or freezing in general. Only freezing i've ever seen was from overclocking.

Damn these people must have some old shit. I have more driver problems on windows XP than i do vista. I never really have to install drivers on vista if i reformat, it does everything, whereas on XP i have to individually get various drivers. Kinda annoying. My game controllers actually work better on vista than they do on XP.

3/26/2008 12:23:01 PM
^My damn all-in-one printer keeps fucking up in XP also. I can't figure out the issue. Works fine in vista. Plus my REALLY REALLY old cyberlink remote control requires a driver in XP, but works w/o installing one in vista. The wireless 360 controller seems to work a lot smoother in vista too. Windows 7 i think is supposed to be out late 2009/ early 2010.-but then again all my hardware is new except for that remote which might explain my lack of driver issues. drivers written for Vista are worlds better than XP and previous. One of the big changes for integrators with Vista was Microsoft closing tons of driver loopholes, forcing 3rd parties to adhere to much more strict standards in driver development.Hence the long delays, because of higher cost for back compatible drivers.
3/26/2008 2:02:55 PM
windows 7 is currently slated for 2010, currently it's at/near Milestone 2 (M2)http://www.dailytech.com/All+Signs+Point+to+Windows+7+in+2010/article11074.htm
3/26/2008 2:41:41 PM
I don't have any vista issues currentlyOther then being pretty pissed that dreamscene requires Ultimate.Really? REALLY?
3/26/2008 2:45:04 PM
^lol i tried running some 1080p Planet Earth vids as my desktop background, but i found they were too distracting while trying to do work. I'd just close the window and watch them.
3/26/2008 2:49:13 PM
yea you can hax0r dreamscene video desktop to work with any version of vista by swapping the DS.dll's and a reg edit but I actually want the animated backgrounds that are abstract enough not to be distracting yet pretty pleasant to stare at once in awhile.
3/26/2008 2:50:36 PM
i've yet to try out dreamscene...think a 256mb 8600gts will run it? or is it more proc/mem intensive? running a 2.2ghz c2d and 4gb memory
3/26/2008 2:51:17 PM
You'll be fine.It disables when DX10 apps launch I think. The biggest bottleneck would have been system memory which you clearly have plenty of.
3/26/2008 2:54:38 PM
dreamscene works fine on my p4 3ghz with 1.5gb in XP ultimate
3/26/2008 3:19:56 PM
wth is xp ultimate?
3/26/2008 3:23:46 PM
^^Your statement is completely irrelevant because we're discussing the legit version of dreamscene for vista, not a hacked version for XP. The issues would be completely different.
3/26/2008 4:27:03 PM
ok well in that casedreamscene works fine on my work computer (1.73 c2d, 1gb mem, and integrated graphics with vista home premium)[Edited on March 26, 2008 at 5:28 PM. Reason : f]
3/26/2008 5:27:48 PM
^Again vista home premium does not have dreamscene as an option. It's a hack. Vista ultimate is the only one with dreamscene. If you use the dreamscene hack on Vista it requires modifying windows files, and it runs slightly different as i understand it. So again, not relevent in a hardware comparison it runs slightly different when hacked.
3/26/2008 5:53:51 PM
so wouldnt you agree that he should be fine running it on ultimate with a pretty good video card and plenty of ram because i can run it on a system its not designed for with far less memory and integrated graphics?
3/26/2008 9:24:47 PM
Yeah he'd be fine with those specs. It obviously depends on the resolution of the video you're trying to use as the background.
3/26/2008 9:34:01 PM
I think I'm going to keep vista installed. having my 360 as a media center extender opposed to the old method is definitely nice. I just wish my audigy 2 worked completely. This Realtek HD onboard audio is finicky at times.

per this thread: http://brentroad.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=520567ah good old vista. seems very stable on my machine. no crashes as of yet. some hiccups here and there, like for example after i open the lip of my laptop it will flicker once or three times, and on at least one occasion it reset the display setting to something very low, and i had to reset it, but at any rate, it was stable. i did not use vista before sp1 so i cannot compare them, but however vista with sp1 is probably worth installing over xp right now if you are casual to a high-moderate user. but if you are into dev'ing or use your pc for your work, like if you are a graphic artist, you might want to get some peer advice before you upgrade xp, otherwise you have my blessing to upgrade
4/7/2008 8:51:30 AM
has anyone used an unattended XML file during vista installation to PERMANENTLY and COMPLETELY change the location of the "users" directory (my documents) to another partition? josh mouch's solution is 1.) very complex and 2.) seems to have problems with certain updatesbest i can come up with is re-installing with the unattended XML...and yes, it's a pretty big deal for me to have it done like this
4/7/2008 7:46:27 PM
^yep, that's your best option
4/7/2008 10:53:09 PM
there is no bsod that ive seen in the past year or so. it seems to catch the leaks and PUNISH them immediately
4/7/2008 11:53:08 PM
I finally got a BSOD on vista!!!! I bumped my fsb up really high and tried to run 3dmark 06. Victory!!!
4/8/2008 6:12:25 PM
There is a lot in this thread, and I will go back and read through it all, but any quick suggestions?I just got this laptop:Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T8300 (2.4GHz/800MHzFSB, 3M L2 Cache)4GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm15.4 inch Wide Screen WSXGA+ TrueLife LCD with Camera256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive which I thought would be plenty but Vista is still running a bit slow, the really annoying thing is that half the time it doesnt recognize my damn double click (and I have messed with the mouse settings)... any thoughts?thanks
4/30/2008 3:21:09 PM
your stats are better than mine, and my computer runs great
4/30/2008 3:26:15 PM
very similar to my laptop's specs, except that i've a 7200rpm hdd, but i doubt that matters too muchvista's running fine for me too
4/30/2008 3:40:46 PM
hmmm, could it be that the wireless usb mouse I am using, which is about 2 years old isnt quite 100% compatible with Vista? thats where most of the delay seems to be, clicking and moving stuff... some delay when switching applications... do you all have the sidebar open? gadgets etc? did you change any settings?
4/30/2008 4:11:31 PM
I only have 1gb of RAM and Vista runs smooth on my laptop. I dont have any gadgets open. Other than that I am just running it normally with no problems.
4/30/2008 4:17:14 PM
updated the mouse driver and that seemed to help a bit... still takes a while (relative of course, like 5-7 seconds) for Firefox to load...
4/30/2008 6:39:50 PM
wait what? For it to load? That doesn't seem right. I had vista installed on my old pentium 4 laptop with 1 gig of ram that i bought like 5 years ago and firefox still came up in 1-1.5 seconds. Make sure somethings not running in the background?
4/30/2008 6:44:36 PM
i have gadgets, multi-task heavily, and still no lag or delay
4/30/2008 6:45:09 PM
what could be running in the background?not being an ass, just asking what to look for that I should shut down
4/30/2008 7:10:18 PM
I love Vista.that's all.
4/30/2008 7:13:36 PM
^^bring up the task manager and sort the processes by cpu usage and see what's going on. I use IE because it seems more responsive and takes less memory than firefox.
4/30/2008 7:16:13 PM
the norm, Yahoo Messenger, AIM, explorer, Outlook, firefox

4/30/2008 9:07:32 PM

4/30/2008 9:44:03 PM
Get Sysinternals' Process Explorer for a better look at what is going on.http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspxMuch more detailed than Task Manager.
