errrrrr....OK...I'm tryin to think, but I'm still not totally sure what to do about the anchors. I mean ideally I'd like one of you to tell me plastic anchors are pointless and that the screws themself will be just fine....

^ Is it the tap in kind that sort of looks like a mezcal worm (I figured you'd get the reference) with a hole for a screw? Like these:PS: It depends on how much weight you're trying to hold up. If it's a significant amount and you need a secure mounting, I would recommend toggle bolts:[Edited on September 19, 2007 at 1:17 AM. Reason : .]

well I'm not a tequila drinker, but I do indeed know what you're talking about....and yes, that would be the kind.As for weight, I mean it can't be too heavy itself, a few pounds, maybe 6? then the stuff going on it...maybe a total of 20 pounds but that's probably an overestimate.

^^ Ah, so there's no under-mounting--it's hidden? And I was asking what the wall is made of, not the shelf, girl.In any event, just pull out the old plastic wall anchors with a pair of pliers or tap them in further. If your shelf is going to cover the holes or the anchors, no one will see them anyway. And with a hidden-mounting shelf--if that's in fact what you have--just follow the instructions. If it were me, though, I probably would still use the toggle bolts because I like things to stay where I mount them. And if you're going to be putting any significant weight there or valuable things that you don't want broken, you don't want the shelf to fall.^ Any woman who doesn't want me to open the door for her should stay the hell away from me. Shit, I still stand when a woman enters or leaves the room. What about cultural sensitivity for the way I was raised? Showing certain courtesies to a woman does not mean that she is a lesser being. oh...well the wall? I have idea what it's made of, drywall? Would that be an answer? And as for the hidden things, I looked on that page, and actually there's not even that I don't think, there is nothing that hangs below the shelf. It basically sits on the 3 screws

^x5 Um. . .yeah, drywall is acceptable. So, as I thought, there is no under mounting. The shelf probably slides onto some type of bracket. If this is the case, use the toggle bolts I mentioned, which you can get at Home Depot or just about any hardware store. If it's not a slide-on bracket or something like it, just use the screws that are provided with the shelf and follow the instructions. And plastic anchors will help hold the shelf in place better than just a screw because the plastic expands a little in the hole. Just make sure that you drill the holes large enough for the mounts but not so large that they will be loose--and just tap them in. Be sure to make sure that your holes are drilled on a level line--you don't want your shelf to be crooked.Shit, I could have driven over and mounted the damn shelf by now, girl! 9/19/2007 1:56:27 AM
well the shelf was mounted on one wall, I felt I needed to change up my bedroom a bit so I moved the bed to another wall...and this being California, we don't hang anything near our beds so I had to move the shelf...hence I had to remove the old plastic anchors. Now I was just hoping that maybe I didn't need to use the plastic anchors next time around which would make less mess in the future, but because this shelf doesn't have any brackets that it slides into (it literally is just 3 screws that hook into the back of the shelf) I think I'm gonna have to at LEAST use the plastic anchors, perhaps the other one's as you suggest

Just go to Home Depot and get more anchors and screws... It's a floating shelf, use the 3 anchors and screws and it will hold about 15lbs. You don't need the heavy duty metal anchors. Those are for really heavy loads.

Back to anchors, I'm a big fan of these:It is a crappy picture but the best I could find. You tap it in till until the threads contact the wall, then screw it in the rest of the way. When you're done, you just back it out. The hole isn't that big either, since the threads cut through the wall, not punch through it, and it is pretty easy to spackle over and paint. The problem with screws alone is that the threads on most screws aren't deep enough to securely engage the material that drywall is composed of.

if you can find a stud things become much simpler
9/19/2007 10:22:46 AM
you seem to still be debating on what to do with the old plastic anchors. push them into the wallspace and don't worry about them ever again. no one's going to care and it's not going to hurt anything at all.
9/19/2007 10:51:54 AM
OK, next question....I've got a tv, tivo and dvd player. The tv is obviously the heaviest, then the tivo, then the dvd player. Asthetically it looks better to have the tv sit on top of the tivo, but I'm worried it's too heavy....?
9/19/2007 4:44:33 PM
its is most def. too heavy. plus things like TIVO and DVD players have cooling fins that should not be covered up. they should ideally have their own shelf.
