I was just in NYC over the long weekend and found it hilarious that all the New Yorkers were complaining about how cold it was. Apparently it never gets that cold there. I'm not sure I believe that but whatever, I stayed toasty.
1/21/2009 12:08:48 AM
it was 5 fuckin degrees.thats cold.
1/21/2009 12:25:52 AM
probably going to the alumni club gathering for the unc game next week - hopefully it's not a complete blowout
2/9/2009 10:01:19 AM
^^dude its not Minnesota, how fucking cold do you think it should be to start complaining? Not to mention everyone walks around up there, instead of cruising around in a heated car.
2/9/2009 1:25:26 PM
^^ I may head up there depending if my friend visits or not.. would be my first alumni gathering Is it usually a good crowd??
2/9/2009 6:53:04 PM
yeah...unc game will probably have 20-30 heads...unfortunately, lots of carolina douches as wellit's a canned food drive as well...
2/9/2009 8:35:00 PM
i've only been once and had a good time - i recommend heading out there
2/9/2009 9:19:33 PM
I might be taking my Japanese friend to NYC. He's a bar owner and wants to see some cool bars of the sports variety. Last time I went drinking in New York was 2003 so I have no idea where to take him Any suggestions?
2/9/2009 9:25:21 PM
Ask MajrShorty, I filled her in on all the good placesBrother Jimmy's is great. Over time you'll come to hate WFU their fans show up in large numbers and can be pretty annoying.
2/9/2009 9:57:48 PM
^^ Tis true, I have a running list of "TKE-Teg approved places to go".I've got a few more of my own to add, too Still a noob tho so I'm sure others have great suggestions.
2/10/2009 11:18:13 AM
JUST realized the game is on Weds Feb 18th, my friend won't be in town yet so I'll be there. Woo hoo!
2/10/2009 11:22:49 AM

2/12/2009 1:46:55 PM

2/12/2009 1:52:05 PM
Where the hell is there a Down the Hatch in midtown?
2/13/2009 11:29:36 AM
Midtown? What's your definition of "mid-town". Down the Hatch is on West 4th Street!Great place if you show up early. Very small place and gets way too crowded. The Slaughtered Lamb across the street is a nice place though. Has a British pub feel to it.
2/13/2009 12:32:01 PM
anything exciting going on this upcoming weekend - i'll be in town for work and having to stay the weekend as well to support some crap and my wife is flying in on friday for the weekend
4/26/2009 10:35:46 PM
for you^ and just in general, New Yorkology has a month-by-month calendar that seems pretty handy.http://www.newyorkology.com/archives/calendar/index.php
4/26/2009 11:01:13 PM
thanks for the linkhas anyone seen God of Carnage http://www.godofcarnage.com/ - might try to get tickets to one of the weekend shows - slightly more expensive than i'm typically willing to pay for a show but i love the cast
4/27/2009 11:35:44 AM
I know this thread was originally for fun things to do, but can anyone recommend a reasonable hotel in NYC for less than $160 a night? We're trying to be close to any of the following: Time Square, Chinatown, Little Italy. The hubby and I are going to be in NYC from July 28-August 1st.
4/27/2009 11:46:09 AM
Tribeca Film Festival is going on...or it just ended, not sure...but that's something (maybe)
4/27/2009 12:39:32 PM
I got tickets for God of Carnage when we go up there in a month or soI've heard nothing but great things
4/27/2009 12:40:53 PM
^^^always check hotels.com. this summer, my family found a deal at the helmsley on 42nd st (near grand central) for less than $200/night. (hotels.com was having a 20% off sale) also, don't be set on one location - times square gets old fast, imo.]
4/27/2009 12:42:32 PM
Cool. Thanks. I had already been checking hotels.com and booked The Roosevelt Hotel through them last night. (Book 4 nights, get 30% off)... So we got The Roosevelt for $139 a night + tax. Queen bed. Now I just need to read this thread and figure out what to do while we're there.Plane tickets and hotel are already paid. Sweet.

I live near Albany and went to NYC for the first time a few days ago. I think I would rather eat a bag of shit then ever go back to that city again. It might be for some people, but definitely not for me.
4/30/2009 8:31:38 PM
going to Blue Note tomorrow night to see john pizzarelli- pretty excited about itany recommendations for food near southwest washington square? and perhaps a chill spot to grab a beer before the show if time - thinking about maybe hitting cafe ino for some wine and a sandwich [Edited on April 30, 2009 at 10:56 PM. Reason : woops - sq. ]
4/30/2009 9:30:14 PM
^washington square? there's some awesome food around there. the west village is a 'hip' place to be.my brother is a chef/line cook/works at centro vinoteca, really delicious pasta and entrees, appetizers, everything.
4/30/2009 10:51:27 PM
Lots of stuff in that area but not sure which cafes are good. Just walk down MacDougal, Bleeker, Thompson St.Mamoun's Falafel at 119 MacDougal St is a great late night hunger fix for after show. Beware of the hot sauce... seriously.
4/30/2009 11:22:32 PM
mmm yeah i need to check out some of the falafel spots in the west village. mamoun's and another one are my bro's favorites - and our dad is palestinian so we're used to damn good falafel. (we still can't find anything that beats dad's, but that's how it is.)but seriously, that area has a ton going on. you can always check out yelp, but i'd probably just wonder around a bit and see what looks good.

Ok, so my cousin is flying into NYC in 2 weeks and i'm driving up there to pick her up with a bunch of friends. This is her first trip to the United States and I want to show her a good time. I know of a lot of the family oriented things to do in NYC since i've been there a bunch but I don't know much or anything about the night life. She also mentioned she may want to rent a limo for a night and go clubbing and stuff. Any tips ideas places to go etc?
6/16/2009 6:04:48 PM
6/17/2009 9:19:29 AM
subway fare just went up .25 cents....
6/17/2009 11:05:16 AM
my bff is there for 2 weeks right now. she said its been cold up there this week
6/17/2009 11:08:28 AM
the weather has been shit60's and rainy
6/17/2009 2:38:02 PM
It feels like its been raining forever - but I'm not going to complain about the temps. This is way better than only having 2 weeks of spring. nothing is worse than waiting 15 minutes in the fulton st station soaking entirely through 3 shirts before the train finally shows up.
6/17/2009 3:26:38 PM
yea, wtf. it's raining like almost all the time.
6/17/2009 9:35:42 PM
monsoon season ftl
6/18/2009 7:27:26 PM
Seriously, WTF NYC? I mean, the only advantage for me has been that it's delayed buying an AC unit for the apt. But I want summer!
6/18/2009 8:23:52 PM
booked our tickets today! good price, too 148 round trip and that includes all the fees etc. i mean, until we check a bag ofcourse. i'm excited!!! july 31 - aug 4
6/21/2009 1:17:01 AM
my list of fun places (calling TKE-Teg, who has tons more)- Comedy Club- Top of the Rock (better for views than the empire state building)- Trailer Park (GREAT for "knock you on your ass" happy hour margarita pitchers, as well as good burgers and tater tots with TONS of trashy kitsch for atmosphere)- Florencia 13 - big burritos, bigger margaritas, modest prices and a pretty cool atmosphere- Holy Basil for thai food- Haveli for indian food- If you're into soccer, Nevada Smith's is great for catching a game- Central Park (duh)- take one of the numerous water taxis for views of the island from the river(s)- Staten Island ferry for ellis island and statue of liberty views- go see the huge testicles on the bull down near wall st (seriously, they're big and you can tell where people rub them, quite numerous)- Rockefeller center is cool, even in the summer- go on a sunset cruise, tons are around so check them outI've got a (slightly) longer list of bars which mean no cover and no stupid $50 drinks. Others have provided great suggestions, too.BTW - goes without saying but NYC can get HOT. Subways especially. Bring CASH (not all places take cards here... I always ask) and make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and drink some water. Nothing worse than a sweaty fainting person on the subway in the summer. Or city streets in the summer. Or fainting person anytime. Especially in the summer.
