thanks, its hard to tell, but you can see the wood grain through the red finish when you're up close.

Anybody know if you can have Gibson's blank truss-rod covers engraved to look kinda like the Standard, Studio, etc ones do?

I don't see why not, provided the engraver has some white fill-in gel or the plastic piece is B/W/B like an SG pickguard.

i have not. i used a 5150 for years before i switched to mesa (when i finally got the money) and i was happy with it for the most part.

peavey's seem to have a big range in quality of sound from their amps they produce tho. what i mean is that more than other companies they seem to have amps ranging from great tone to terrible tone in the same batch of same model heads. not sure what it is about their manufacturing process.

I've always like the sound of the Peavey Classic series...a little bland, but good nonetheless. Dunno about the Valve King.

Picked up a Rickenbacker copy off Craigslist yesterday for $300. The previous owner bought it in an Ohio pawn shop back in the 80's. Not sure how old it is or where it was made, the guy said he thinks it's Japanese but I can't find any markings anywhere. It looks better put together than other pics of Ric copies I've seen online. Good little project guitar. I saw on the Ric website that the red Rics 330s were produced from the late 70s through the mid 80s. The wiring harness and switch need to be replaced which will set me back another $70 but the direction towards the treble pickup it sounds really nice, and a super cheap way to get that jangle Ric sound. I'll post pics when it's all fixed up and repaired.

^^ too bad you werent around this past summer when I sold mine. I had one in great shape (i still use the cab from it) that I used for 3 years with this band for the same reason. (a lot of my fav stuff being recorded with one).

But honestly It was not a versatile amp at all. The clean sound in a 5150 is mediocre at best and the distortion still doesnt touch that of a Mesa live. I switched way from the 5150 to try a mesa and ive never looked back. WELL worth the change

Thats where my interest in slide comes from.
I have to admit, however, I really prefer his earlier stuff.
progressive blues experiment, debut, and the rock stuff like still alive and well, saints & sinners.

What kind of amp & guitar do you play?

I have a large collection of cheap guitars
I'm pretty good at setting them up, fixing etc.
so here's my rrundown:

a black epiphone les paul copy. The one that has only one tone and volume pot.
a yamaha strat copy that I've blocked the tremolo on.
a lotus tele copy that someone put a hotter pickup on the neck side.
a charvel rhodes with rose type bridge.
a squier jazz bass.

I play those through a small Kustom amp, on the clean channel and use
a modded boss cs-3 and a boss mt-2. That's too fuzzy for me so I'm looking to get the boss
blues driver.
The bass I play off a ibenez soundwave 65

my accoustics are:
ovation custom balladeer which I bought new a long long time ago.
a Hoffner 12 string (open tuned, low like Kottke)
a regal chrome resonator (usually open g, but sometimes standard).

My dream set-up?
a real les paul,
a real strat (like the clapton model with the mid boost and all that shit)
a real tele
and since dreams are cheap......
gibson es175 and of coarse a dark sunburst firebird like one of the ones winter plays.

and a real tube amp.

It could be argued that I could sell all that and buy just one good guitar, but I love the different
styles and I'm an amatuer who has played cheap instruments all his life.

Kustom! I saw one of these in a youtube video and couldn't for the live of me remember the name.

Have you ever played a Clapton strat? I haven't but I hear they have a real hard V style neck. I don't no if I'd like that or not. I liked the John Mayer strat a lot. And I wouldn't think twice about getting a blues driver, especially a keeley modded one.

Haven't played one. I'm not sure about the neck either.
I've kind of gone full circle regarding clapton.
he was guitar god #1, but this was with Cream.
I hated all the I shot the sherrif era stuff.
After clapton it was Winter, but other than some pale attemps at meantown blues, his licks were just so far out of my league I stopped trying. plus, after listening to him for over 35 years I STILL can't understand a single word the fucker is singing!
Then it was SRV for a long time.
Where I have hit gold is getting the DVD of the cream reunion.
That sound is where I want to live! I study and play along with that something like 4 times a week.
Anyway, what kind of shit do you play and listen to?

Oh man, uh, right now I'm in a spanning out phase. But people that definitely inspire would be Derek Trucks, SRV, Rory Gallagher, Roy Buchanan, Richard Thompson ect...

If you dig the Cream era Clapton sound you might wanna set your sights on getting a Bluesbreaker or something similar. A lot of great amp makers have their own versions of it (some arguably are even better than the originals) for sale online.

i dono much about teles. i just know that i want a rock guitar.

think: jimmy eat world, sunny day real estate, texas is the reason, old foo fighters, siamese dream era smashing pumpkins etc. something bright

A Tele is going to be almost too bright for that kind of stuff...the bridge pickup is 100% country spank (which is why I replaced mine with a lipstick tube). I'd go for a Strat instead if that's the sound you're going for.

i actually like that...i guess after the gretsch, the 2 teles and this strat its obvious that i like plain oil finish so the woodgrain shows hahah

of course the guy has a 0 rating so i wont be buying that from him heh

my cabinet has been making a noticeable farting/vibrating sound when turned up to show level on low end palm muted stuff. my initial thought is just some screws loose somewhere.

any thoughts?

PS id check myself but i dont keep my cabinet with me down here in SC heh
