spurs have been a huge disappointment, if they had one more playmaker on offense, than i think berbatov would go nuts for them(although keane has been playing well). i havent seen arsenal play in quite a few games lately, so i dont know how well hleb is doin currently. rosicky has always been an injury problem so that always sucks.

im in agreement that arsenal is about to fade as well. with that thunderous start it seems that some of their players are fallin off, whether from just random injuries or fatigue(plus they lose a couple/few key players to african cup of nations). on that same note, i am entrigued to see how Portsmouth is gonna do during the cup of nations as well. they have, i think heard, around 7 players gone during a tough part of the season.

Fabregas, Hleb, Flamini all back in the starting lineup for Arsenal; Van Persie to come in off the bench.

eduardo who? bendtner has been a good super sub, we'll see about a full match soon.

arsenal wouldve been down the shitter had Togo made the cup of nations, wouldve been so long adebayor, and with van persie always injured, you wouldve had 0 strikers.

Roger Van Der Horst, Staff Writer
Since when does a team of 15- and 16-year-old boys from Raleigh find a way to defeat one representing the Chelsea Football Club of London, one of the most powerful soccer teams on earth?

Since Sunday.

The Capital Area Soccer League's Elite 91 team defeated Chelsea 2-1 to win its under-16 division in a tournament that brought more than 400 youth teams to Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

It was the soccer equivalent of knocking off a feeder team for the New England Patriots.

For those who haven't seen the English Premier League on Fox Soccer Channel, Chelsea is the professional club that has won two of the past three Premiership crowns. It has become one of the world's most recognized teams in the world's most popular sport.

Last summer, the club signed a partnership agreement with Disney's Wide World of Sports that includes sponsoring the Florida tournament, which is called Disney's Soccer Showcase, presented by Chelsea Football Club. Chelsea is trying to expand its brand in a growing soccer market, said Charlie Stillitano, a U.S.-based consultant for the British club.

"We want to become, if you will, America's team," Stillitano said.

Chelsea's developmental team was missing eight of its international players, some of whom didn't get visas in time, and the team included a 12-year-old and two 13-year-olds. But all the players were in Chelsea's Academy system -- players being groomed for the professional ranks. This year, the Chelsea boys finished near the top of a youth version of the Premier League.

Breaking the 'Disney curse'

That didn't matter to CASL coach Rusty Scarborough and his players. They just knew the other side wore "Chelsea."

"It hit me when I wrote 'Chelsea' at the top of my [pregame] notes. I went, 'Holy moly,' " Scarborough, 48, said.

That the Raleigh team even reached the final could be classified as an upset. Jared Girard, a Green Hope High School sophomore who played in Florida, said the team's first goal in the tournament was, well, to score a goal. The CASL Under-16 Elite Showcase entry had lost all six games in the previous two post-Christmas Disney events and failed to score last year.

"The Disney curse," Girard called it.

This year, however, the team won three round-robin games and the semifinal Sunday morning.

For the final, Scarborough emphasized the importance of not coming out tentatively. He also wanted everyone in the game. "I knew this was something they'd remember for the rest of their lives," he said.

CASL had the good plays

Although Chelsea took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute, Girard said he and teammate Ross Tomeselli realized, "Wow, we can actually play with these guys. We've played better teams than this."

At halftime, Scarborough talked to his players about exploiting open spaces in Chelsea's back line.

In the second half, they did just that. First, the CASL team broke down Chelsea's defense in the 45th minute with a ball to Magnus Sorensen. The Danish exchange student, who's spending the year with the Girards, spun and scored on a low, 18-yard shot.

About eight minutes later, Glenn Scott made a long run and headed a beautiful crossing pass by Bo Burns into the net for a 2-1 CASL lead.

It was, the Chelsea report stated, "everything it was supposed to be, great football from both teams -- Chelsea the technically and tactically superior team against CASL from Raleigh, North Carolina, a strong, physical team."

Said Scarborough: "Top to bottom, athletically and physically, we were probably better."

While acknowledging that it was a "pretty good" upset, CASL Chief Executive Charlie Slagle said from Florida: "It's more of a verification that the kids in the United States can play." In comparison with the rest of the world, "we're getting there playerwise. We're still not there spectatorwise," he added.

The victory wasn't the only mark CASL made. Its 90 Elite team won the Under-17 Showcase championship. And Alex Givens and Alex Long from the CASL 91 Elite team were among 18 Disney all-stars selected to travel with Scarborough to England in August to train and compete at the Chelsea Academy.

At this rate, it won't be long before we're all referring this ball-and-foot game as "football," right?

"No, no, no, that's OK," Slagle said. "We can still use 'soccer.' " http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/story/854719.htmlhttp://www.newsobserver.com/sports/story/854719.html

man utd actually looked pretty good until they subbed off tevez, except for the play of carrick, which i hope they get rid of this transfer window...when scholes comes back, with anderson and hargreaves, carrick will not be starting anymore. birmingham were lucky with all those ridiculous blocks and post hit(tevez) they had in the 2nd half. once ferguson subbed off tevez to put in saha, the game changed and man u lost their shape. tevez's tenacity and determination to win the ball and find space is infinitely better than what saha is gonna do. i was really surprised to see carrick stay out the whole 90 minutes considering he gave away the ball at least 5 times i counted and just didnt do much on attack

hopefully tevez's ankle is not seriously injured

Despite fears that the injury could be serious, a club spokesperson told ManUtd.com: "Nothing is broken, Carlos Tevez has just got a badly bruised right ankle."

Sir Alex Ferguson has already confirmed Tevez is a major doubt for Saturday's FA Cup trip to Aston Villa, but the likely return of Wayne Rooney from a virus should provide timely compensation for the Argentine's absence.
