^^&^^^ because this is a heat wave caused by a high pressure system. Just because its 100+ in Raleigh doesn't mean it will be hotter further south just because it's further south.

The northeast had a heat wave last week and for 3-5 days in a row it was hotter up there than down here.

So the humidity plays a very important role.

It can but doesn't always. I don't think this current heat wave is going to be a very humid one (thankfully). Currently outside it is 28% humidity (according to weather.com). 28% is pretty low, to the point that while right now it's 93° outside it only feels like 91° due to the moisture evaporation rate from your skin.

I'm no meteorologist but there are some guys on TWW that are I believe.

that's a stupid analogy.

if you went out and shot par three rounds in a row at some shitty public course, then no you wouldn't think about going on the pga tour.

however, if you went out and broke the course record at pebble beach, then the next day broke that record, and then the next day shot the same score again, you would absolutely be thinking about trying to join the pga tour.

am i wrong about that, golfing-wise?

[Edited on June 28, 2012 at 2:25 PM. Reason : ok so i'm only kind of a meteorologist, in that i study boundary layer fluid mechanics.]

you're not wrong, but your approach is flawed (no pun intended). Yes, it's likely to set record highs, but 3 days does not a climate change make. What about Tuesday when it was unseasonably cool? Or the previous stretches of great weather earlier this month? Do those below normal temps not count in your equation?

if they were below the record low, then yes they would count.

i don't think you understand that these aren't "hot days", these are the three hottest days ever recorded in raleigh (provided it actually gets that hot).

and fine, three days is not climate change. how about 11 years?

this is the most important issue ever in the history of mankind and people are like "please, let's not discuss politics". this is not politics, and these are not opinions.

simonn there's a nice thread dedicated to this discussion over in TSB.

As to official RDU recorded weather temps, the station is at the airport. I have no doubt records there will continue to be broken. How could they not given all the concrete, metal and tarmac added to the location as it expands over the years?

Anyway let's please get back on OT. Who wants to try frying an egg on the street this wknd?

The NAM and GFS models have been showing 104-105 all week for Raleigh. When you factor in an area of high pressure close to overhead (sinking, compressing air) and a west wind off the mountains (downsloping, warmer wind) that may mix out a little of the moisture, I think 105 or 106 is very possible. It's always difficult when it comes to forecasting record events.

What's sad is that unless it happens at the airport, no number of backyard weather stations will be used as the official high temperature for Raleigh. That said, it's currently 104 here.

^^I'm not sure I officially understand the reason for that figure. The RDU airport is barely even in Wake County. Also, not like the environment at the airport is representative of Raleigh as a whole, or has been without change over the years

That being said wasn't the temp at RDU 106° for about 45 minutes less than an hour ago?
