It wouldn't take more than 50-70k miles and an 01/02 model to get it in the mid 20's.

Even carmax sells them for that.

Either you have SMG problems or you don't. As for the rod bearing recall, this car has had it..........and no problems since. I wouldn't be scared to own one. Hell, the motor has a 100k mile warranty on it.

Next time a particular Laguna Seca Blue M3 comes in to the shop, I'll get some pics of it. It had one of the first rod bearing recalls BMW approved..........then had to get another due to a part change. The car is driven for this guys work vehicle........it has 225,000 miles on it.

well smg pump was way more problematic on SMG I and 100k warranty is also 6 years, whichever comes first, so technically it is out.

SEE

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/07/video-cgi-be-damned-inside-the-bmw-m3s-v8/

Quote :
"The edifice for the spot began with a tour of BMW's M facility in Munich, where the IdeaCity crew studied the inner workings of the M3's 4.0-liter V8. They had three complete engines shipped out to Belgium, where manifolds were cut, cylinders were shaved and lighting holes were drilled to mount special cameras, lenses and lights. After two weeks of intensive study and preparation, the team took another four, 20-hour days to film what happens inside the 420 hp mill during a single revolution. The completed spot was filmed at 10,000 frames-per-second and doesn't utilize any form of computer-generated effects."

Anyone see the Comparo of the M3 vs IS-F, RS4, and C63? I'm glad someone finally tested all 4 of those together dammit.

If I had to pick one I'd probably go with the C63 (unless I really didn't like the transmission). It smokes the M3 everywhere except the track, but how often would you track a car like that? And even if you track it, not like it'll be competitively timed

^M3 is not only about power. It's a driver's car, C63 is still playing catch up.

It is better balanced, sportier, and FAR better value 10 years down the road.

Eh, to see any real difference you'd have to drive them back to back. Seems like most of the rags say the C63 is just barely behind the Bimmer in handling.

This is more on the M5, and I'll probably get flamed to hell for this, but...

I drove a brand new M5 about two weeks ago. It's not as hard as you think... I was at another dealership poking around (I happened to be wearing a suit from an early engagement that day) and the salesman offered to refer me to someone at BMW when I told him I didn't like what they had on the lot. A salesman isn't likely to refuse a testdrive to a referral. Anyway, I liked the car overall, but the driving dynamics weren't too impressive for what I was expecting... it felt slower than the C5 Z06 I've driven, even though it probably isn't. The motor felt like an Rx-8 to me--practically gutless under 4k but with obviously a lot more top end, and this is coming from a rotary owner. That kind of powerband is fine in some types of cars but for something 4000lbs it was unpleasant. They probably have what, 300 lb/ft of torque actually at the wheels? Big cars feel slow to me unless they have torque and/or aggressive gearing.

What really did the car in for me is the overwhelming interior gadgets (first time I've messed with idrive) and the weight. G35 sedan is slower and isn't as sophisticated or nice inside, but for some reason I enjoy driving it more.

You should take a E63 for a test drive, or better yet a used E55 AMG which had one hell of a punch down low.

^^^^was it an M5 with smg or a manual? trying to just hop in and drive an smg isnt something easily done the first time, that and your being overwhelmed by the idrive probably didnt lead you to all the M settings that are there that really make the car fun to drive. On top of that, its a 5L v10 engine built for revs, so while it does have silly power down low the car really doesnt get happy until you get up over 4k on the tach, but even then youve got more than enough rev range left to really appreciate what it can do. there are several suspension settings as well as horsepower profiles to choose from, pluse the active seats are pretty cool when the bolsters slide out to hold you in a corner.

trust me, any car you can break wheels loose in in first through third is going to be a hlluva lot more fun to drive than a g35

It was a 6 speed manual, I have no desire to drive the SMG. I had it in high power mode, traction control was fully on though. I guess what I'm trying to say is that a high revving powerband like that just feels retarded in a big car. I didn't get any chance to do 100mph highway pulls in a 100k car so I didn't beat the hell out of it. Trust me dude, I've driven some fast cars with different types of powerbands--not a crapload, but: 2007 6 speed G35, lightly modded 2004 s2000, 1993 stock Mk IV supra TT, 2002 C5 Z06 with boltons, a couple fast Rx-7's of various years, and a 1995 600whp Vr-4. 4000lbs with no low end torque is lame to me. Call me jaded then. If it weighed 3200 or something it'd be way better.

[Edited on May 20, 2008 at 8:41 AM. Reason : imagine a Hemi charger that's faster, but feels slower b/c it has no balls under 4000rpm]

Think about what youre saying. Its the ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE. It doesn't actually count as a high revving engine. Sure it makes peak power at >4krpms but it has an V10.

and^^ i would only consider a couple of those cars in the 'fast' category, certainly not the g35 or s2k, but the z06 and supra more like it...

^^ if you drove the car, you may agree with me. Or you may not. To me, in a straight line it's not much different than an s2000 except the speedo moves faster when you floor it. Yes I know on paper it's a second faster in the 1/4 and at least 12-15mph faster in the traps... but when you drive it you aren't like omfg V10

^^haha, thanks. I wasn't entirely sure but went with it anyway.

^You should drive an E55 or E63. The torque that thing has is crazy (esp. E55). Plus it'll show nothing but taillights to M5s, especially from a roll.

^ E55 AMG was recorded at 4.2 for 0-60. I suspect the E63 AMG is even faster, as the C63 AMG has recorded 3.9 sec.

I think those numbers are better than the M5s.

Anybody have official numbers from any of the top mags?

Photoshop showing what the facelifted M3 sedan will look like when it comes out in a few months. The taillights are being updated on the 3-series, so they will also receive the same changes in the M3:

^^^^Not a chance man. E55 and the E63 show taillights to the M5 every time. Check numbers of any magazine, or 1/4 mile times posted on MBWorld.org.

Or if you dont think those are credible enough watch the Top Gear episode where they tested both at the same time and the MB pulled big time on the Bimmer.

Ironically enough I saw another one today, same as the first. And I doubt its the same car as one was in Manhattan, the other Queens.
