Its been 3 years and i just now cleaned my bearings. I think I might just replace my gumballs before the semester starts. Anyone have any suggestions? (I like gumballs but want something slightly different)

This afternoon i'm going out to centennial. I've been practicing pumping... awkwardly shaking my booty and scooting along. Last few times I've gone out I have gone from not being able to do it for more than a few feet to being able to lap the top of the deck multiple times. I'm also starting to 'feel' how to pump differently at high vs. low speeds, like different drive ratios. Fun stuff.

I have been going out in the mornings for about 30 minutes before work. Took these with the digital this morning, then some more this afternoon that need to be developed. Come out and get your blood flowing while its nice and cool... 7:30 - 45ish.

I have some spare 150mm indys and some krypto wheels.

Yesterday I set up a new deck to replace my pintail. Its a bit shorter with more foot space near the trucks and it rides real sweet... Wedged in the front and dewedged in the back, its easy to keep pumping and carves nice, but I have a feeling it would get speed wobbles pretty quick pointed straight downhill.

I'm itching to ride with some people... I've been hitting the garage all alone, mostly in the mornings. Lets ride, people! Get off your butts.

Here's my new board, modified from a pool/park deck with the tail cut off and front truck moved all the way forward. Just painted it yesterday and I got some new wheels in for it today too... some 3DM 'blast wave' 78mm 75a in clear orange. Mmmmmm.

I've got a Bozi Madbomber with Randal RIIs and Abec 11 flywheels (83A duro). I like it pretty well, it's a topmount, and I got a deal on it used on ebay (the deck, the other stuff I bought new). I got a good deal on all my protective gear buying old motorcycle stuff on craigslist... There's talk of another, bigger session up that way again at the beginning of august if you're interested.

ive got some brand new kryptos (never ridden) that gravity was including when they were out of their wheels. ill never use them cause i have my grippins so you can have them if you want. (ps if youre getting rid of gumballs the grippins are pretty fun, not as big but still good wheels).

Would any of you be interested in goin on a distance ride every now and again? I lack the motivation to go very often on my own. One of the north Raleigh trails is relatively flat with nice asphalt for many miles and is superb for pumping (ha, ha) because there aren't many people around to laugh at you. Now that the weather is starting to get more bearable lets get out and RIDE. Its good for you.

so i just got back from california - i saw some dude in san francisco riding an ironing board with really wide trucks. at first i wasnt sure what i was seeing, then he picked it up and there was a piece of wood on the bottom to screw the trucks into and it was a full on ironing board. i laughed

gunguy, what do you have? deck, trucks, etc. And what are you looking to do?

I use my boards to commute and ride distances on flat land so my setups and riding habbits/values reflect that. If you were just going to be carving hills for fun then you would likely prefer a somewhat different setup and/or approach.

I generally run my boards with the front truck loose and the rear truck a little less loose. Until you are comfortable pushing around you may want to run them a bit tighter but ultimately being in the habit of having tight trucks will limit you. To find the right tightness for you, go to an empty parking lot or flat area and practice pushing in a straight line with your board foot centered and pointed straight forward or slightly turned, but centered. You should have the trucks tight enough so that you can push in a straight line balancing on that one foot without darting left and right but loose enough to where you can steer left and right without moving your foot from the center of the board and without putting the pushing foot back on the board. Being able to balance and steer on one foot is key because it is also what allows you to foot brake.

Lets say you are going down a brick sidewalk on campus and there are people around and pine straw or small gravel here and there to the point where controlling your speed by carving is out of the question. In this case you should bail before you are going to fast and save face by walking down, OR you could foot brake. Position your board foot like you would to push and while keeping your weight completely over the board, lower the ball of your push foot to the ground gently and slowly apply pressure to slow down. Don't try to 'reverse push' and slap your foot flat on the ground, just drag it. You can brake very effectively (and abruptly if need be) in this manner and bleed off speed when approaching obstacles or groups of people. Feel free to throw your arms up and use your whole body as you are doing this to help yourself balance. Aint no shame... Do what works.

As far as truck setup, I use wedge risers in the front and rear, both pointed thin end forward. The degree of wedge used has a lot to do with the specific setup and rider preference. This wedging pattern reduces steering on the rear truck and increases it on the front. I have found this to be desirable most of the time for pretty much all longboards because it will help the rear end track and allow you to 'drive' the front to steer. Speed wobbles are reduced as a result but until you are very comfortable foot braking at higher speed the best advice is to not push it because once you are past the limit you are not coming back.

I skate around centennial quite a bit so if you promise not to bring any weapons perhaps we could meet up and go from there.

EDIT: another important note on setup is wheel bite. You should not be able to get the wheel to touch the deck no matter what you do on the board. Have the deck far enough from the wheels so that they will never touch even at full turn and jumping on the side of the deck.

That parking deck looked familiar. What about the ditch though? Is that what is was... The steep concrete transition.

FS: set of 150mm Seismic trucks, one front, one rear (different baseplate angles) I have the original springs which are a bit stiff and a set of lighter springs for each truck as well. These have very little time on them and all my boards are currently set up with other trucks. $50 for everything. New it would be $64 for the two trucks and then another $20 for the two lighter spring sets.

They do have a nice springy flex. A bit pricey to be breaking on steps... Did he pay you for it?

A regular maple longboard deck can be set up to carve almost as nice. Its all in the truck wedging and large, soft bushings. Big ol wide grippy wheels help too

I most recently ordered some stuff from daddies board shop. They have a good selection and prices on most stuff. Theres also longskate.com and others as well that would be just as good I imagine. You can also make gloves pretty easy if you are so inclined, they just won't be as pretty.

I went to the Slalom world Championships in Statesville a couple weeks ago and of course everyone was skating a somewhat similar set up (slalomy trucks, big wedges, and Big zigs or the seismics)

I imagine yours may be a little more pump specific but a similar board is on my "to buy" list

How do you like those Bennetts?
and what type of board do you prefer (length, stiffness, etc)

I love the Bennetts. Wedged Randals work too with soft bushings and extra bushing meat on the bottom of the hangar but the Bennetts make it easier to change up your pump. Their range of motion is awesome and they have a great liquid feel.

I have yet to explore much past just the basic wooden deck. At first I pumped my sector 9 pintail with the randals and the extra wheelbase allowed a slower gyration and higher top end speed. It was 32.5" wheel base between the inner mounting holes. It started to fail at the mounting holes so I made a 29.5" wb board out of a dregs looking lonboard. I moved the truck to the very front since the nose was kicked a little and I chopped off most of the ginormous tail. It didn't do as well as the longer board with Randals but transformed with the Bennett in the front. I have not tried the Bennett on the pintail yet.

I had high hopes of going out to Statesville but work got in the way. I bet it was a blast! We should set up some cones sometime. Solo cups work if its not too windy!
