no.. having 1080p in a 40" is overkillIts awesome when i'm up close for gaming but just chilling watching movies its overkill.
5/16/2007 9:57:36 AM
i'm thinking of a 42" as it's 28% more viewing area than a 37" for not too much more.westinghouse 37" only has 1 hdmi right?

For the other samsung people with LNS XX45d lcdshttp://www.vq35de.com/Software/Samsung/4x9x/4x95_Setup.htmhttp://www.vq35de.com/Software/Samsung/4x9x/if you upgrade to this firmware it will give you "Just Scan" mode when running hdmi in 1080p or 1080i.This gets rid of the 3% over scan that the lcd typically has.

btw I still love my 56" 1080 Samsung
11/12/2007 8:30:16 PM
im about to buy a 42" panasonic plasmaany reasons why I should avoid it?I have absolutly no fear of burn in . I drove a CRT projector way too hard with lots of questionable content and dont see any burned phospher on the tubes.
11/12/2007 11:25:40 PM
^ As long as you're buying the 1080p one on sale for 1399 (or the glossy for 1599) at Best Buy, Panasonic's plasmas are typically good.
11/12/2007 11:29:55 PM

11/12/2007 11:36:58 PM
Ive been eyefucking the Samsung LNT-4665
11/13/2007 11:10:22 AM
Thanks Bobby 1) $2000 budget2) Max 40"3) No lag on Guitar Hero#3 is crucial!!!I'm looking at the Samsung LNT4065F 40" 1080p LCD HDTV but every HDTV I've played on has been between 6 and 84ms. It's a problem on expert. D:Also recommendations on whether to get it from a big box store or online?
11/13/2007 4:26:45 PM
I got mine online and it works fine...but the day it doesn't i'll probably cry.(old version of that tv lns 4095) i love it but i don't play guitar hero. i do play halo though and i do feel like i get killed due to lag sometimes but i never thought it could be my panel.
11/13/2007 4:56:46 PM
Boyfriend's mom has a giant panel TV (don't know whether it's HDTV) and it was laggy. I can play FFXII on it no problem because split second button tapping isn't a huge part of the gameplay, but rhythm games and depending on what kind of situation you're in in Halo aren't forgiving with the split second delays.
11/13/2007 5:08:22 PM
amazon is the place to buy - price competitive, free shipping, probably no tax and you can get 18 mos interest free if you use their card
11/13/2007 5:12:49 PM
Yeah I was looking on amazon earlier today. Good deals.I'm not sure what I need. My 50" toshiba 1080i rear projection tv is crapping out, and I'm considering dropping around 3k on a new one. Should I get a giant DLP rear projection tv or a smaller LCD or plasma?
11/13/2007 7:06:43 PM
depends on your room... if its a movie theater and you don't see rainbows go with dlp otherwise plasma has the better picture but i still like my lcd
11/13/2007 7:18:40 PM
so since I'm not up on the latest TV information, why does plasma have the better picture?
11/13/2007 8:01:57 PM
better contrast ratiobetter blacksfaster display
11/13/2007 8:02:40 PM
Lcd still uses less power and has almost 0 chance of burn in...those are the reasons i still like it better.
11/14/2007 11:07:02 AM
plus you get a much larger screen for your money... that made it really easy for me
11/14/2007 9:15:09 PM
11/15/2007 9:15:16 AM
OK, so it turns out my tv was fine and I don't have to get a new one.I had the same image problems with both dvd player and tv, so I figure it's probably the TV. I bring in another TV and it has the same problem. I swap cables and have the same problem. Then I go buy a new receiver and still have the same problem. WTF.Turns out it was my cable box's proximity to my receiver. I moved it to another shelf and everything's fine. I guess it might be going bad.
11/17/2007 11:49:20 AM
bttt...sharp/samsung still the top 2 manufacturer's? do many people recommend westinghouse/vizio?Does anyone have a backlit LCD TV yet?
1/28/2008 3:59:06 PM
I have a 34'' CRT HD for sale in the classifieds if anyone is interested...
1/28/2008 4:43:26 PM
i'm looking at getting an HDTV on a budget....under $1000 and in the 37" to 42" range. we have the viso 42" 720p ones here at work and they look great. i've found a 37" visio at circuit city for $799 however i noticed that they only have a 1000:1 contrast ratio where as the LG 37" for $999 has a 8000:1 contrast ratio. my question is how important is the contrast ratio (all other specs being the same) and is it work the extra $200?
2/6/2008 12:15:09 PM
the 8000:1 is probably Dynamic contrast ratio. different companies will have different ways of saying "ours is better, look at this number". having said that, LG makes some of the best tv's and i would definitely spend the extra $200 over vizio, no matter what Ladanian Tomlinson says.
2/6/2008 12:21:24 PM
I have a 46" LCD Sharp AQUOS 1080p that I got at BB for $1399. Absolutely love it! http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1186004962867&type=product
2/6/2008 3:54:55 PM
Yeah the aquos look really good in person they give me tv-envy and i have a 1080p tv.
2/6/2008 3:58:58 PM
^^the bb site says 1999. what deal did you find?
2/6/2008 4:08:27 PM
^ i got it on black Friday. Sears was selling the 720p for $999. I went back on Saturday and it was back up to $2399.
2/7/2008 9:01:52 AM
What do you guys think about LG 47LC7DF 47" LCD HDTV with 1920x1080, 1080p, 5ms, 8000:1 at Tigerdirect for $1599. Then get BB to price match + 10% diff. So it should come to $1560 before tax. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3303807&CatId=2815
2/7/2008 1:56:41 PM
^are you sure it's not refurbished?
2/7/2008 2:05:50 PM
yes
2/7/2008 2:06:59 PM
okay, i almost created a new thread because the search is more messed up than usual, but google gave me this, so +2 points to me for (albeit small) initiativealright, so roommates and i are splitting up (i bought a house, they got new jobs out of state) and one of them owns our 32" LCD HDTV...i have a 27" tube television, but i'd really like a new 37-42" televisioni know LCD vs plasma has been debated and yet i'm looking for an update (or, rather, i don't feel like going through the threads to find the information (so maybe -2 points to me for laziness)...is there any reason to go one over the other? LCD is cheaper, so i should get more television for my money, right?next step is size...i can't do more than 42" because of the limitations of the built-in entertainment center (doesn't matter anyway, i don't want to spend more than what a 42" would cost)...plus, at 42" i think 1080p begins to become necessary (or at least desirable), and i'm not willing to drop the extra money on 1080p in that sizeokay, so i have a $150 gift card to circuit city, so that's my preferable place of purchase...ideally, i'd like to find the tv at walmart or tigerdirect or something and then get cc to price match so i can use the gift card...that said, if there's a great deal on a tv that they don't carry, i'll buy it somewhere elsesuggestions? i think that vizio and olevia are the cheapest that have decent ratings and reviews...cc carries vizio, and i can get them to price match the 37" vizio that both walmart and tigerdirect carry (~$750)...any other suggestions? i'd like to keep it below $900
4/22/2008 9:53:28 AM
Buy a 42" Panasonic plasma. The 720p one might be slightly more than you're looking to spend, but it'll be worth it.
4/22/2008 2:15:22 PM
why plasma over LCD? i DO like the picture better, but what happens if a plasma craps out? at least with an LCD i can buy another inverter (because i can't think of what else could break save for the board, and i don't think that's nearly as likely)
4/22/2008 2:16:59 PM
why do you ask for advice and then argue against it? not trying to start an argument or anything, but i seem to remember you doing the same thing about high octane gas in that lexus thread a few days ago.
4/22/2008 2:35:31 PM
Thing is, at the size, there won't be much of a price or IQ difference between the two. However, if you plan on watching a lot of 4:3 content or play a lot of video games, get an LCD. Otherwise, just get the cheapest one you can find, and for the love of god, don't buy a Vizio or Olevia unless all you care about is having a flat screen.
4/22/2008 2:37:30 PM
4/22/2008 2:42:00 PM
Permanent burn in, yeah, that's almost a myth these days for modern TVs. But I'm speaking more to temporary image retention or ghosting, which could get annoying if you play a lot of games.
4/22/2008 2:50:33 PM
LCDs do it too. It's by no means a plasma specific issue. The longest I've ever seen a plasma ever retain an image for is about 10 minutes and was within the first 100 hours or so of use.
4/22/2008 2:58:55 PM
4/22/2008 6:17:17 PM
i'm not being a douche. for one thing, the plasma vs. lcd debate has been done over and over again. you don't even need a working search function to find several threads in here about it. second, you already made up your mind about it, you just want someone to agree with you. again, like in the lexus thread in the garage you wanted to know if high octane gas was really neccessary. plenty of people gave good reasons why it was, and you kept arguing against it. third, i did qualify my question with "not trying to start an argument", but i see you wanted to start one anyway.and finally, IMO both technologies have advanced in the past few years such that its a much closer battle. i personally wouldn't buy one from what someone else said without seeing a demonstration myself to see if i like it.

4/22/2008 10:27:12 PM
there was nothing to contribute, it's all been contributed over and over again. and most of the time it comes down to personal preference, so go to a retail store and look at the tv you want. it should be obvious at the lack of useful posts following your question that people are tired of giving the same advice over and over again every time somebody decides they want to buy a tv.like i said, i wasn't trying to start an argument, but anyway...it sounds like your main concern is price/value, since you said you DO like the picture on a plasma better but are concerned about it lasting so long (a valid concern). there are 4 tv's that fit your price range and screen size on CC's website. one is a polaroid and the other is vizio. the two that are left are LG (LCD) and Panasonic (plasma). both are $999. at this point i'd just go to the store and see which one you like best.
4/22/2008 10:40:46 PM
So I've been reading that glare is an issue with plasmas. My Mom is getting ready to by a TV for a room that gets a lot of sunlight. Anyone experience any problems with this? Also any suggestions for the $1250 range (42"ish)? I'm kind of partial to the Samsung plasmas in the store but I want to see if there is a better option.

40" samsung LCD 720p HDTV for $900 (and i have a $120 gift card, and there's no interest or payments until 2011)...decent deal?http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Samsung-40-LCD-HDTV-LN-T4042H/sem/rpsm/oid/174197/catOid/-12867/rpem/ccd/productDetail.doi've not seen too many 40" LCDs...they usually go from 37" to 42"...anything wrong with 40"? parts hard to find?also, is there anything wrong with the insignia brand LCDs from best buy? i would assume someone else makes their panels, but less than $1k for a 42" 1080p set is tempting (or $800 for a 720p set)[Edited on May 4, 2008 at 5:56 PM. OK, so I have a neighbor of mine that works at HHGregg and he said he could get me a pretty decent discount on anything I wanted to buy there. In the neighborhood of 20-30% on most things. So I'm looking to get the best thing 2 grand will buy. I want 1080p and non-projection screen and besides that I'm practically clueless. Bigger is better up to like 50 inches or so and beyond that, I don't really care. Anybody care to weigh in with what they'd get for ~$2500 from HHGregg? Or would I still be better off getting it somewhere else like online or whatever?
