I thought the ACC frowned on taking coaches from other schools in conference...

surely they'll have something negative to say about this (especially Swofford)...

either way, i'm not particularly excited about this... seems like a nice hire, and it seems like he'll be able to do a lot more here than he could at BC, but it also seems like it's going out on a limb, it's hoping that there wasn't just something special about his place at BC that won't be repeatable elsewhere... i haven't really seen any indication that he's a good gametime coach in the games we've played against them so it just seems kinda "eh"...

hopefully he'll get a few seasons before people start calling for his head... but knowing the fans around here, that's probably not likely...

SFN article. The writer likes the hire.

Quote :
"It’s now a headline on ESPN.com - Boston College head coach Tom O’Brien will leave to coach Atlantic Division rival NC State. It looks as if we may get a formal announcement as early as tomorrow.

As SFN noted earlier today, we agree with the apparent decision of the NC State search committee - Tom O’Brien is a better hire than Paul Johnson. And pretty much everyone agreed that Johnson would be a good hire, and clearly an upgrade over Amato.

I don’t want to repeat too much of the logic from the above-linked post. Suffice to say - those who claim Tom O’Brien is “Herb Sendek v. 2.0? are simply wrong, in our estimation. According to SFN’s sources, Coach O’Brien sought out the NC State job with the same vigor and tenacity as did Jimbo Fisher. He really wants to be here, and I think it’s safe to assume it’s because he believes he can elevate his success to a whole new level at NC State. He can go from “pretty good” to periodically competing for the ACC title, and regularly make good bowls (as even his current level of performance would land NC State in good bowl games). His floor essentially is identical to the Dick Sheridan level of performance, and few Wolfpackers complain about that era. And that’s not to say we expect that to be his ultimate ceiling - there’s every bit as much reason to hope for upside from TOB as there was with respect to PJ. I don’t think O’Brien would have made this move if he didn’t think he could take it to the next level at NC State. We should be honored and very enthusiastic that such an accomplished, respected coach feels that way about our university.

Please feel free to share your opinions below (don’t forget to contribute more facts at VaWolf’s thread below). We hope that even those fans hoping for Johnson, Fisher, or somebody else will be fair and rational about this hire. At SFN, we couldn’t be more excited about ushering in a new winning era of NC State football.

I like this hire. I think most of you who don't are just saying that because he isn't an elite name from an elite program. Jimbo Fisher would have been a riskier hire. Paul Johnson would have been a good hire as well, but I don't see any indicators that PJ has an edge over TOB. The one thing TOB has is ACC coaching experience, which I like better than PJ's experience. Anyway, if we go 9-3 (10-3 with a bowl win) 4 out of 5 years, I don't think many people will be complaining.

ok i take that back, this is nc state. we always find something to complain about. It's like a fanbase of wives.

I know Jimbo would have been risky, but he was my first choice. Then I wanted Tom O'Brien and we got him.

I don't really like Johnson for some reason, which I can't even put my finger on.

This is classic NC State Power. We want a coach so lets go get one from our own conference division. I was kinda hopping to hire Skip Holtz just so we could say "ECU you might have beaten us but we still are better than you, Thanks for the Coach." hahaha

exactly...fuck sexy. amato was sexy and look what we got. a lot of fire and smoke, but in the end, no discipline and no winning. ill be honest, i dont know much about o'brien and my first pick would have been johnson, but in the end, hes going to get my support and im excited about seeing some change.

Ugh, if he brings all his coaches and BC gets new coaches, I don't think that applies.

I think the BC fans who are whining about him not taking them over the top are going to be in for a nasty surprise when they find out they have to settle for someone else. It isn't like that is an extremely attractive job.

Though, I suppose they could get lucky and land an up and comer...but I wouldn't plan on it.

Sure, its as absurd as TOB vs Herb questions people are raising. You can't compare apples to oranges.

NCSU bball -> rabid fans but if you can get past that, then its an amazing opportunity for any bball coach for a multitude of reasons (ACC, excellent facilities, good fan support)

BC football -> Who are they? Lackluster facilities. Red headed step child to pro sports. Have big shoes to replace in TOB

It's night and day. Sure some folks were claiming we could end up with something worse. Sid (despite a great start) might be that guy. But for BC, they are nearly fucked for sure unless they just get lucky and get an up and comer.

Barnett, while not exactly writing a hit piece, certainly didn't do the story (or NCSU) justice.

If BC wanted to hang on to the best they had, they should have manned up to the college football arms race. It's sad that it has come to this, but no one forced them to join the ACC. And if they don't want to support a great coach in TOB with more money and better facilities, then I don't feel so bad giving him a chance to prove how good he is here.

I'd say continuing to sell out CF after 2 years of shitty results is definitely good support. You're a damned moron if you are going to try and argue that NCSU fans are rabid about NCSU, especially when I am putting it in the context of compared to Boston College.

how odd would it be for Amato to land at BC.

he would actually fit in pretty well, alot of hype, changing things, facilities upgrade...good recruiting

I could see him doing decent there and makin them seem proud

the best part about this...Im REALLLLY looking forward to having a good O line and with the running back talent and QB talent we have right now, i say in a few years we should be competing for a BCS game...seriously...all we need is an O line and this guy really knows how to do that, hes always had one of the best in the game.

heres to a good o line good run game and Beck or Burke being a star.

What is the connection between hiring a coach we beat this year, and him not doing well?

I mean it wasn't like we beat BC by 30, it took a hell of a play to do it.

I don't think us beating BC is a sign that he isn't a good coach, I think it was more a glimpse of how our team should have played all season but chuck couldn't get them to get it together. In 2002 we beat Navy 65-19 does that mean we shouldnt have hired Paul Johnson either?

By that logic, Mack Brown would have been a bad hire for us when O'Cain was fired, since O'cain beat Mack Brown.

I am a little concerned with poaching within the ACC, but the article slamming us for doing so (link posted above) indicates that the only time it has ever happened before was when UNC did it.

I bet they got praise heaped upon them whilst we are being led to the cross.

Does anyone know if we got permission from the ACC to make this move?

I have tried to ask SFN via post, but they just delete the question which indicates trouble to me.

TOB pursued NCSU for the job, not the other way around.

Also, we didn't need permission because there is no rule against it, being that is is unwritten and all.

Exactly! After a couple of terrible seasons, the BC fans that were calling for TOB's head will be eating crow and wishing they had him back. Especially when we wipe the floor with them repeatedly.

some dude on Collen Cowherd said it was a good hire for NC State. Said BC fans didn't appreciate the "best football coach ever at BC". Said his pros were "discipline, which was lacking under Amato". Said he would have to change his recuiting style at State. Said BC was the 8th or 9th choice for attention in the Boston area. Pretty much some of the same stuff covered here

which is highly unlikely, given his desires and history for keeping a consistant staff, which is very important in the college ranks.
