Hahah, heck yeahh!!! I was on the varsity tennis team and all the guys always wanted to go to the Quaker Steak and Lube one our way back. They got the best buffalo wings ever, as they say.

Yeah, the Amish lived 5 min from my house... i loved it. There's a difference though in northern country vs southern hick country. LOL i know I'm gonna get beaten for saying that.

Don't spend the next three years of your life being miserable. Take it from someone who's been there. I'm eastern NC born and raised, and let me assure you that growing up in Wilson is worse than Raleigh. I've spent a great deal of my life waiting for the next part of my life. "Everything will be better when I leave home for college." "Everything will be better when summer comes, when classes start back, when I graduate, etc." Location doesn't matter as much as you think it will. Sure, New York has more people that mind their own business and less people that are Bible thumpers, but it won't take you long to realize they're just more people that lock step to their surroundings. You'll realize that nothing has really changed. There still won't be money falling into your lap or people giving you the respect you deserve or women jumping all over you. There will still be assholes and idiots and snobby bitches.

In summary, don't spend the rest of your college career waiting for the next step of your life. Changing cities doesn't magically make everything better. Work on the here and now.

Have to disagree. I've lived my whole life in the DC area and spent alot of summers in NY, and one thing I will admit is that it is alot colder in these places than in NC, but at least the weather is consistent. Not, 80 degrees on Monday, then it rains all day tuesday so its 45degrees on Weds, I mean c'mon. You never know what your gonna get.

^^^That's fucking bullshit. The weather varies just as much here as in NC. There were plenty of days this year when it was in the 40's then 70's just the next day. Actually we had a snow storm that dumped about a 10" then a day later it was 70's and melted it all.

The saying in maryland is "If you don't like the weather, just wait a minute" . But almost everyplace has something similar.

But anyway DC is not the north, and only someone from way down south would consider it to be.

2. Just b/c DC isn't technically above the Mas.-Dix. line, anybody that has lived there or goes there know it has a northern feel. Traffic, houses on atop of one-another, the bricks, carryouts on every corner, c'mon guy.

I think it's just that people in the mid-atlantic through the northeast don't really take the people of the south into consideration. Meaning southern people don't cross their thoughts because they don't deal with southerners and the differences in cultures. In general I would say they don't like or dislike southerners because they haven't given southerners as a whole much thought. Where as there are a lot of northerners migrating to the south, so people here are face to face with the differences on a regular if not daily basis and thus more likely to have formed an opinion. Growing up I never heard anything about northerners vs. southerners, or one disliking the other, differences, the civil war, mason-dixon line, etc.. But once I came here for school in '01 I've heard it all constantly. This conversation is probably not going on anywhere in the north. The clash of cultures is not something they have to deal with.

^^^ is right, D.C. is not the North, or the Northeast. It just happens to be north of NC. Maryland is in the mid-atlantic, and though that is not the south and is culturally different, it is also not the northeast.

V yeah sorry, i saw that after i posted it, changed it

I'm from Cali and My best friend is from NY and we have both come to the conclusion that people in other regions don't hate southerners, we've just kind of moved on from the whole civil war situation. It's annoying when southerners bring it up. She hates being called a Yankee. And it was weird for me coming over here and hearing things like "long live the south" and seeing confederate flags and such. In Cali you learn about the civil war in elementary school and thats about the extent of it. I had no idea people were still talking about it and identifying with it until I got here. And you can't say that northerners don't have pride, you've obviously never met someone from NYC.

the fact that southern men hold sway over a good part of our federal system is reason enough for people up north to think about the south quite a bit. The South lost the Civil War but won control of our government anyway.

While, DC, NoVA, and Maryland are different from the Northeast, they are not the South. Maybe that's why they call it the mid-Atlantic...

O RLY? I guess the weather musta been hella different in Fairfax County (where I did most of my growing up) than DC, because the wheather there is almost exactly the fucking same as it is in Raleigh. I remember blizzards and I remember 90 degree days in January. I never once thought I was warmer in Raleigh during the winter, I only thought it was more humid during the summer. But hey, that's just me. I certainly dont have any excuse to bitch about the weather where im at anymore.

DC/NoVA is generally a bit colder in the fall, winter, and spring, but just as hot and humid in the summer.

Oh I don't know, a few of those self-proclaimed rednecks have turned out to be some of the nicest, most genuine people I've met in NC. But I will say this, when I first moved here a lot of southerners came off a bit insincere. I'm not sure if southern hospitality actually implies being nice to people even if you don't like them, but with a lot of people, other females especially, that seems to be the case. But then again I may have just been misinterpreting people. Language was more of a barrier than I thought it would be. One time a waitress called me "sweetheart" and I got offended because it sounded like she was talking down to me. I know better now, but little things like that really show case the cultural differences.

That is called civility, and it has nothing to do with whether you like someone or not.

.... I don't know. There are parts of Maryland that hold very southern ties... Eastern Maryland... and southern maryland... and there are certainly spots in northern virginia that are southern.... tidewater virginia... Ever been to Tappahannock?

... but i'll agree with you on the area around DC. not northern... and not southern.

Some marylanders have the craziest accents I've ever heard... the small port cities up and down the bay have this crazy baltimoreze accent...

My fiance went with me when I tried to open a checking account a couple weeks ago...

banker: "so what type of account would you like to open?"
me: "a checking account"
banker: "okay... ...would that checking account be for use?"
me: "....ummm... yeah... I'd like to use my checking account"
banker: "no not use... USE!"
me: "uh... what?"
banker: "for the two of use??"
me: "oh... no... no... just for me."

as for the weather... it's the same all along the east coast... just colder up north... and warmer down south. We all have the crappy humidity in the summer.

Northern people dont not like southern people, but there are a lot of differences in the "culture" or being raised in the north and the south.......and i think that sometimes it is difficult for us to understand a lot of the "southern ways". Not that either is better then the other.....its just different.

ROFL I got this in the mail

"Welcome to the mid west.

People are just assuming your white.

Its a midwestern thing, not a MN thing.

The bigger the city the more cultural diverse you will
find.

a lot of small towns around the midwest small towns
means small minds (in the mid west).

You should try the bible belt thier worse. At least
we dont burn churches down like in the south."
