^^ I unfortunately wasn't at the game, so I missed the insanity that was Tripp and Jesse's trip to the hairdresser. But even so--the man is still good for a cheap laugh.

umm.... yes, he does suck. But the chant is directed at the goalie IN THE GAME at the time.

I'm on board with telling Kolzig he sucks at all times.

Sean Burke always gets it when he's sitting in his chair in the tunnel, and he never even gets close to playing.

Aside from limiting it to the goalie ON the ice at the time, the goalie chant also has the following "rules."

1. It can only occur btw the 10 minute mark, and the 19:00 of the period.
2. Only the goalie's last name may be used.
3. No modification of "(Last name), (Last name), (last name), YOU SUCK" is allowed.

I didn't make these rules, but they are the way they are. If you're at a Canes game, and wondering what is correct, look to section 328.

Kolzig is washed up. I don't know why the Caps use him... He's looked slow this season. I think that can partially be blamed on the Caps lack of a defense.

You would think that either Johnson or Oullette(wtf spelling?) would be decent enough to start.

The only players that have looked good for the Caps have been Halpern(didn't play because of his jewness... not that it would've mattered) and Ovechkin.

This was the third game this season they've given up 7 or more goals... Pathetic doesn't even start to describe them.

Witt sucks, and yet he's the only defenseman worth mentioning on their roster.

Lucky for me, my coworker has already started to let me have some of his season tickets cause of the caps suckiness.

[Edited on October 13, 2005 at 1:58 AM. Reason : also leading the league in PIMs, I think.]

^^ The time rule is a bit flexible if the guy is looking really shaky or if stoppages and/or puck possession force it to be performed in the last minute of the period.

are they actually playing decently this year?

Only thing that I have seen this year about the hurricanes is the OT shootout win over the Pens and this morning when someone scored an own goal

Lightning 5, Hurricanes 2
Hurricanes 3, Penguins 2 (OT)
Islanders 3, Hurricanes 2
Hurricanes 7, Capitals 2

They're up 3-0 on the Devils right now.

Looks like they might be 3-2 after tonight.

Yeah WTF? He scored a goal in the first game and was subsequently benched for three games. After last night he's earned his playing time.

Brind'Amour was on the short list for offensive player of the week

Quote :
"Also considered for the offensive award were Philadelphia Flyers winger Simon Gagne (four goals, three assists) in three games, Maple Leafs winger Jeff O'Neill (4-3 in four games) and Carolina Hurricanes centre Rod Brind'Amour (3-2 in two games)."

this is what i found

Quote :
"

Attendances have jumped 6.2 per cent, despite a labor dispute that wiped out an entire season.

Eight days into the first season, crowds have gone from an average of 16,643 a game at this stage in 2003 to 17,673, 95 per cent of arena capacity.

Teams are now averaging 6.4 goals a game compared to 4.5 a game two years ago, reports lycos.co.uk

The NHL will shut down again in February so players can compete at the Torino Winter Olympics, which many believe will further showcase the league. "
http://www.sportbusiness.com/news/index?region=global&news_item_id=158514

From the Toronto Star:
Quote :
"The World Series of Poker and NASCAR's Busch series are attracting three times as many American viewers as the NHL these days and there are some grave attendance problems in Washington and Buffalo, but compared to this time last year, commissioner Gary Bettman is on top of the world.

It was nothing but happy talk from Bettman yesterday when he met with the Toronto media for the first time since the lockout prior to the Sports Media Canada luncheon.

"For anybody to suggest two weeks into the season, when we're playing at 93 per cent capacity, that there are trouble spots, I think is looking for a negative story that isn't there," Bettman said. "All our franchises will be fine."

Still, the league is averaging just a 0.3 rating for its games on the Outdoor Life Network in the United States, which represents about 190,000 households.

The Washington Capitals have had crowds of just over 10,000 for each of their last three home games, the New Jersey Devils had just 11,166 for their last home game and the Buffalo Sabres averaged more than 5,000 empty seats in each of their past two games.

Even the mighty New York Rangers failed to sell out earlier this week.

"In many quarters, there was a constant suggestion over the last year that the situation we found ourselves in would result in tremendous damage and that's not the case," Bettman said.

"In places where there still are some empty seats, there are fewer empty seats than there were in the past. I didn't expect we'd come back from the work stoppage to 100 per cent of capacity overnight, but the fact that we're up 5 per cent is spectacular. I knew that when we got everything put to bed and fixed the right way, the result would be compelling enough that our fans would respond."

Bettman said the focus should be on the new NHL, which going into last night's games was producing an average of 6.2 goals per game, more overtime scoring and fewer fights.

Bettman said the game in its present form represents "a fulfillment of the vision we had going back a number of years.

"For the first time in a long time, the NHL has momentum," Bettman said. "I'm determined to see us build on that."

Bettman said the reaction from fans has been very positive and observed that teams are making use of the long pass that has been presented to them with the absence of the red line, that sticks are not being used to check and that the comeback has well, come back.

"More games are up for grabs right up until the final buzzer," Bettman said. "That's great and the fans are loving it."

The commissioner also said that he expects the league will hit its projected revenue target of $1.8 billion (U.S.), "and if they vary, they'll probably be on the upside in terms of revenues," which means the amount the players pay will be less than the 12 per cent escrow that was recently subtracted from their first paycheques of the year.

But Bettman is most encouraged by the environment that has been created by the new collective bargaining agreement, saying that it now gives all 30 teams the chance to keep their star players.

"Talent has been more equally distributed throughout the league," he said. "By necessity, smart management will replace chequebook management in the NHL."

Bettman also touched on a number of other subjects, including:

#
# Mandatory visor use: He said the league has consistently been on record saying it supports mandatory visors, but needs the support of the players' union.
The NHL's controversial ad campaign: "People like it, people don't like it, but the fact is everybody knows about it and that's what a campaign is supposed to do," he said."

Its hard to tell with the canes specifically with only 2 games, there were about 10,000 at the caps game

If you've got nothing to do tonight, come drop $10 on a Canes ticket.

Ottawa is the best team in the league, but with Hasek on the bench, the Canes have a good chance to hand them their first loss.
