he's spent 3 years away from coaching and has been watching other teams play for a living.if he has any desire to return to coaching, you know he's been thinking about what happened.obviously it is unsubstantiated speculation on my part, but i don't think it's entirely absurd to suggest it.[Edited on April 25, 2006 at 12:07 AM. I'd go with "hopefully he's learned"
4/25/2006 12:10:12 AM
ok let's argue semantics instead of discussing coaches
4/25/2006 12:11:28 AM
kActually I wasnt arguing....just making a suggestion cause I agree mostly with the statement. [Edited on April 25, 2006 at 12:14 AM. Reason : ]

so he is 3 years out of the businessthats going to be an easy pitch to recruits. "well ive been watching teams for 3 years, come play for me, it will be awesome."i too have been watching basketball for the past 3 years. does that mean i can be coach?ill take the job
4/25/2006 12:15:18 AM
Well, if he's really interested in coming back to coaching at some point, then you know he's thought about what went wrong at UCLA. He's probably talked to coaches, learned from them, and thought about what he would do next time so he didnt screw it up. So yeah, if he's interested in coaching again, I'd guess that he's learned from his mistakes at UCLA. If he's only listening to us for money, then he's a pantywaste anyway and I hope he lights his hair on fire.
4/25/2006 12:17:15 AM
this is just a bad hire plain and simplethe guy wont stick around long, is a proven failure, is weird, not to mention he is a greaser
4/25/2006 12:19:43 AM
agreed, but like I say....hopefully he's learned
4/25/2006 12:21:15 AM
5 sweet 16's in 6 years = proven failure?
4/25/2006 12:25:00 AM
eh, no, but on the other side of that...People keep pointing out the fact that he had a couple of #1 recruiting classes, and still had that 10-19 season or something, plus never made it past the sweet 16. Whatever I still hope we pull something out of our asses, but its not happening.
4/25/2006 12:28:04 AM
he made it to the elite 8 in his first year
4/25/2006 12:29:08 AM
look at attendance numbers / records during his tenure at uclaall the numbers are going in the wrong directionnot a good sign

4/25/2006 1:41:52 AM
i dont know too much about lavin....but im pretty sure evev if you get a team the year after a national championship, that you still have to be a pretty good coach to get them to the elite 8...i mean the players themselves cant do it, and its not automatic that they win again
4/25/2006 1:51:48 AM
yeah only great coaches can lead talented teams to the elite 8just ask doherty, he lead his team the final four!1
4/25/2006 1:57:25 AM
plus he was an assistant on the championship team, and helped recruit and coach the players that won it.

I've always heard Lorenzo Romar was the main recruiter on that UCLA bench (and I'd say he's done better as a coach then Lavin...taking a crappy Washington team to the top of the Pac-10...and he's recruiting like crazy up there too). From Romar's bio:

4/26/2006 12:45:12 AM
Beilein's players at least play a lot harder than Herb's. I always thought Gansey was going to die on the court or something. That dude never stopped running. And since everyone else is using this as criteria....he beat herb...granted with our two best players on the bench but still....[Edited on April 26, 2006 at 12:52 AM. ^true. What's belein's record against herb?
4/26/2006 12:52:55 AM
1-0 since i've been paying attention
4/26/2006 12:53:16 AM
Ideally he'd come here for a few years, improve it beyond what Herb has done, and retire hopefully when the market for a coach is better than this year, or even groom an assistant to take over. I don't know how old he is exactly, but he looks like he can't have more than 7 years in him.
4/26/2006 12:56:02 AM
He's 53.
4/26/2006 12:56:40 AM
Even better.
4/26/2006 12:57:15 AM
Watching everyone on PackPride cry about the Princeton is hilarious.
4/26/2006 12:59:02 AM
I just want a damn coach, so I wouldnt be too disappointed with Beilein, but I'm telling you...we dont want this guy. He might get by in a few years, but we do NOT have the shooters to play his style of offense. I dont even care if we lost a bunch of games next year, as long as we go balls out and let our athletes run the floor, I'll be satisfied. I'll give the coach a couple of years to fix it as long as people arent bitching like they did with Sendek's offense.....which is guaranteed to happen with Beilein.
4/26/2006 12:59:05 AM
herb is in his mid-40s right?
4/26/2006 12:59:11 AM
According to wikipedia.org, Herb was born in 1963.
4/26/2006 1:00:39 AM
43 i think
4/26/2006 1:00:56 AM
If Lavin or Beilein is the worst we do, I'm okay with that. Now had we gone with Kruger.................
4/26/2006 1:07:13 AM
4/26/2006 1:10:01 AM
I really wouldnt mind if we considered Whittenberg seriously. I mean how bad can it be? Here's the thing....State doesnt have random ass fans coming to games. Everyone that comes to State games has some association with the school. Most older fans that come in the first place know who Whitt is. Getting this guy is not going to kill our attendance, and if anything, I think people will be intrigued for the first year or two and come to the games if for no other reason than to see what he can do. If he can come in here and actually do something in his first year or two, he'll have no problem building recruiting networks and landing the players we need. Half of the players come here because the crowds are so good in the first place, and if Whitt can win stay solid in his first two years, the crowds are going to be insane....and it sounds like he's not going to put up with players half assing it either. I'm beyond the point of caring if we get a big name coach. Just get someone that will be good for the NC State basketball program whether they're big or not. If they're good, we'll be back on top in a couple of years anyway. All a big name mediocre coach is going to do is get us some media attention so that when we start losing we do it on a national stage. Let a guy like Marshall or Whitt work without the national media on their ass and see what they can do.
