Support Cancer Research and the NCSU Wolfpack With Your Computer's Spare Time! What Is It?Essentially the http://folding.stanford.edu/ uses your unused CPU cycles to model how proteins fold in the human body. The misfolding of proteins is often involved in well known diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease. Because this endeavor requires massive amounts of computing power, their project uses spare CPU time on computers that would otherwise sit idle in homes and businesses across the world. Here at North Carolina State University, we have formed this team in order to donate our spare CPU time to help this important endeavor. The North Carolina State University (http://ncsufolding.com) Folding@Home Team (Team # 59) was one of the first teams to join the Folding@Home project, and was the very first University-based team to join. We are currently ranked in the top 100 in the world and are ramping up production in an effort to make it into the Top 50. We are all dedicated to doing our part to help end some of these terrible diseases, and we would appreciate the company of anyone who would like to help. All it takes is the installation of a small piece of software and your computer will start completing Work Units for the project and the team. The Folding@Home process runs at the lowest possible priority so you can run it 24X7 without slowing down your computer or interfering with your everyday computing tasks. If you have a Sony PS3 Game Console you can also run Folding@Home (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-PS3) on it with great results. How Can I Help?Go to http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download,download and install the software. Our Team Number is 59.Click here - http://www.ncsufolding.com/?page_id=4 for more detailed installation instructions.Windows Computers:We recommend using the "text-only console” client for most windows computers. If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor, be sure to install and run the SMP client to get you and the team far more points than the standard console client (but sometimes it has problems starting as a service, so you might have to restart the client manually or automatically via startup folder when your computer restarts). In general, its best to stay away from the graphical clients. If you have a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading, its best to turn off Hyperthreading in the BIOS if you know how. Feel free to post in this thread with any questions. Mac and Linux Computers:There are both "text-only" consoles and SMP clients for Linux and Macintosh computers too! If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor be sure to run the SMP client as you'll get far more points than the text-only client. But the text-only clients also help out too if you only have single-core processors.PS3:PS3s currently provide over 60% of the processing power in the Folding@home network and are capable of producing many points for the team. If you have PS3 system version 1.6 or later, you will see a Folding@Home icon in the Network column of the XMB (PS3 Networking menu). Just click on the icon and that's it. If you don't have 1.6 or later, perform a system upgrade. Make sure to use Team #59!The more computers and PS3s you run the clients on, the more points your username and the NCSU team earns! ^^thanks...i'm trying that now...the first thing i noticed is it is in my program files directory...i will get on this...i will try to get it up and running by tonight hopefully![Edited on November 22, 2007 at 10:23 PM. Reason : ^happy thanksgiving...thought i was bumping this lol]
11/22/2007 10:23:08 PM
omg did i get it?the problem was i did not make an administrator thing...when i finally did everything like they said i got the "msie is working" thing twice[Edited on November 22, 2007 at 11:45 PM. Reason : can i close the command thing?][Edited on November 22, 2007 at 11:48 PM. Reason : one sec its still doing more in the command prompt...]
11/22/2007 11:44:46 PM
yep.
11/22/2007 11:50:09 PM
so if i close the black box while it says 0% (its says 0 out of 500000) it will still run?
11/22/2007 11:51:06 PM
i think so, it looks like you've got it running as a service or somethinggo to start > runtype "services.msc" and click oklook for something that looks like "FAH" or "folding@home"
11/22/2007 11:53:05 PM
thanks b00!!!....its in the services sectionhell yeah...dnl is gonna move into the 100 soon...got my parents computer running it and now my dual core laptop
11/22/2007 11:54:28 PM
11/23/2007 7:45:49 AM
fuck...i restarted after i closed that box just for the fuck of it cause it said it would have to be restarted again to be run as a service...well i just check my task manager and it says "cpu usage: 47%" goes between 40 percent and 48 percent
11/23/2007 4:02:29 PM
if youre running the smp client you should see 4 processes. all together they should be using ~100%
11/23/2007 5:09:09 PM
I swear this program hates me...
11/25/2007 11:06:07 PM
^ possible causes for not making the SMP deadlines:1) not running the client 24X72) running some other CPU intensive application constantly3) client not installed correctly (which can be identified by msiexec.exe using any CPU%
11/25/2007 11:28:19 PM
^Well, the client was still running when I got back today after starting it on Wednesday and no one has touched this computer. I made sure nothing else was running on the computer before I left.I don't have any msiexec.exe processes but I have 2 mpiexec.exe processes, one using 0% and another using about between 20 and 30%.
11/26/2007 12:43:13 AM
Sounds like your install isn't correct...mpiexec shouldnt be consuming any CPU % at all.Did you follow these instructions? Pay particular attention to #6
11/26/2007 8:55:13 AM
I'm retarded, I did have it installed right I just fucked it up afterwards. Working correctly on both computers now... I hope
11/26/2007 3:35:47 PM
Pretty sweet Folding@Home stats site:http://kakaostats.com/
11/26/2007 11:14:20 PM
11/26/2007 11:25:08 PM
^ yeah that looks good. just ensure that the 4 folding processes are using 100% of of your cpu % (and make sure mpiexec isn't using any). if there any confusion/questions just screen cap your process list with it sorted on processor usage.
11/27/2007 8:29:12 AM
Anyway to run F@H off a linux live CD? There's a brand new linux lab in my building that's not in the classroom rotation yet. That means there are ~50 intel core 2 duo processors that sit idle in a locked room. It would be fun to exploit them.
11/28/2007 11:05:26 AM
that'd be badass
11/28/2007 11:08:21 AM
arg, my roommate played ps3 last night and didn't turn folding back on.... ofc the ps3 is still running >.<
11/28/2007 11:17:57 AM
^^^ seems like a possibility...that would be badass http://www.google.com/search?q=linux+live+folding

11/28/2007 5:50:40 PM
Whoa, you can activate it with your PS3 screen saver?!? Where is that option?I am already on the board with my PS3 unit, wish I knew how to change the name from Billy though.
11/28/2007 8:27:52 PM
I just moved up 32 spots from one WU, with another on a different computer to finish in the next couple of hours.
11/28/2007 9:56:12 PM
Has anyone ever seen a "working" live CD implimentation?

we've have an amazing last three days! http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=59today looks like it might be soft though Anyone think we can add enough more computers/ps3s to make it to 100k PPD production??? Any strategies to help get us there?]

11/30/2007 2:54:23 PM
Wish I could help you out, but I don't know that m much about Linux. I take it those sites in the google results were no help?
12/2/2007 4:02:55 PM
^ I found sites where people had the same idea, but I couldn't find anything that actually worked.
12/2/2007 4:35:22 PM
I'll have a PS3 added in this week.
12/3/2007 12:08:05 AM
lost a week worth of production at 1700 PPD, but I'm getting the clients fired back up!
12/3/2007 2:10:56 PM
I'm going to break into the top 100 from NCSU soon
12/3/2007 3:51:48 PM
azaka, what client are you using? the SMP one?
12/4/2007 11:39:23 AM
We're up to 88!

So I tried folding on my new laptop....Unfortunately it only has a 1.46Ghz T2310 (533mhz bus/1MB cache).CPU temp rose to 71'C, the shutdown temp is 80'C, normal usage is only 51'CIt took 45min. per 1 percent, for reference, my desktop does 1 percent every 17min.I seriously don't think I'm going to continue, a) not sure I'd finish the WU in time, b) the heat produced can't be good for the laptop.
12/6/2007 2:29:14 PM
^ I don't recommend laptops for folding.
12/6/2007 2:33:01 PM
i don't either
12/6/2007 3:41:01 PM
i have two old(er) toshibas running 2.2ghz p4's and 512mb ddr that i keep around simply because they do nothing BUT folding...one doesn't have a screen at all, while the second i'm debating selling off i should probably stop using my working laptop for folding, though, as i'm probably just adding unnecessary wear and tear
12/6/2007 4:07:12 PM
#100 and just added a non-smp client also...[Edited on December 6, 2007 at 5:39 PM. Reason : wow right as i posted that the non-smp computer restarted and now the windows install is corrupt wtf]
12/6/2007 5:38:05 PM
^^ Sell the working laptop and use the money to build a folding desktop.
