I hear you. Remember that Cat also dramatically improved from deep as well over the course of last season. The Martins, for better or worse, give zero fucks when it comes to shooting from deep but I don't think they'll kill us.^ probably but they all change it like hours before a commit announces. It's a gimmick.[Edited on May 8, 2015 at 10:26 AM. Reason : 247]

Sounds like Gibbs is choosing between Pitt, tOSU and UConn this week. No visit even. Oh well. Henderson should be a decent like for like replacement for Lacey... Would have liked one more three point shooter to stretch defenses...

we need another ball handler more than anything. If I'm playing us next year, I press as much as possible
5/11/2015 9:15:01 AM
I think we'll struggle more against UVa type teams than those who just throw a press at us. We're going to be tall next year and it's hard to press teams with competent passing large players. A team like WV would still give us problems but any random team that doesn't normally press shouldn't be an issue.I just hope we dont grab some scrub like Eli Carter to fill out the roster. If that guy has to play any significant minutes we'd already be screwed.

man, no wonder John Wall didn't go to State. he was clearly scared of the competition.
5/11/2015 8:49:57 PM
It was Farnold's team. Wall would have had to earn his minutes.
5/11/2015 11:22:46 PM
Well that won't be a factor for Dennis Smith Jr. as we will potentially have 0 PGs on roster next year(if Barber leaves as expected).

^^ In a way I feel bad for Cat. He is more than likely gonna have a very tough year with the departure of Lacey and nobody to spell him at point. I think that similar to Zo's 2nd and maybe third year, he will increase on his assist numbers but not progress as needed with scoring due to defenses being able to stuff the lane behind him. I could be wrong, but honestly the best case scenario would be Abu progressing as hoped and Cat feeding off of that in turns of distribution and some give and goes. I just have a hard time believing that he is gonna be able to penetrate and continue to shoot the 3 the that he did in the 2nd half of the last season now that he will be the number one focus in the backcourt. Of course, I hope that I'm wrong and people pull this quote out a year from now when we are cutting down the nets.
5/12/2015 1:13:38 PM
Let's march up to his dorm with a plaque.
5/12/2015 1:14:11 PM
^^If Henderson is a reliable shooter and the bigs continue to develop (they weren't horrible last year and are still young), then Cat will be fine. Defense won't be able to collapse if Henderson and one (if not both) can hit kick-out opens threes. Same goes for the bigs being able to finish. We already know Abu can finish and Freeman finished off strong after having a rough first half of the year.Cat just needs to make sure he continues his solid shooting. Defenses can focus on him all they want...but if they have to respect the three, he'll still blow by them. He's Cat-fucking-Barber for a reason.
5/12/2015 1:34:52 PM
sure, but still, we had two reliable shooters last year plus Martin. Now, we have maybe one reliable shooter plus martin. That spells no bueno for basically any point guard. [Edited on May 12, 2015 at 1:57 PM. Reason : a]
5/12/2015 1:52:47 PM
We rarely had Barber, Turner, Lacey, and Martin on the floor at the same time, so your point is moot.Martin just has to fill in as one average shooter...Henderson will be the other. You don't need three shooters IN ADDITION to your point guard on the floor at the same time. You really just need one...two is gravy. You're overanalyzing this.
5/12/2015 2:43:09 PM
5/12/2015 3:37:11 PM
I think that the reality will be in between my over analysis and your high hopes. Cat at least still had two lethal shooters on the court at all times with a decent one coming off of the bench. That is the guy that we are hoping for next year, but we lost those two shooters and now have an unknown coming in to take on major minutes. I feel like that you gotta be at least a little concerned about that predicament.
5/12/2015 4:05:19 PM
I wouldn't really call Ralston a reliable shooter... maybe streaky, but reliable not so much
5/12/2015 5:55:35 PM
37% 3PT shooter on his career is pretty reliable. Nobody's calling him JJ Redick...but he was reliable. 6th in the ACC this season in 3PT%, just behind Lacey. That's a damn good duo for shooters.
5/13/2015 7:53:38 AM
Ralston was dangerously streaky from 3. When he was "on", he was a difference maker and could really put pressure on the defense. When he was "off", he could shoot you right out of the game. I loved that he wasn't scared to shoot the 3, but he could drive me crazy with his "shoot yourself out of a funk" mentality. The biggest thing about having a shooter like Wood or Turner on the floor though, is that the defense HAS to respect their ability to shoot the 3. Even when they're having an off night, it only takes 1-2 shots for them to get hot so defenses had to focus on them.We just need one of our guys not named Barber to come out and prove to be an above-average 3-point shooter to help with floor spacing and help when we start seeing zone defenses every other game.
5/13/2015 8:25:26 AM
If you call Turner reliable, then you didn't watch enough basketball last year. Dude was the most anti-clutch player ever. If he got the ball in an end-of-game possession we were screwed. Reliable is someone who you can go to in those situations, not him.
5/13/2015 8:38:26 AM
again, only 5 guys in the ACC shot a higher % than he did, and one was lacey. and Turner attempted more 3-pointers than anyone in the acc. that's pretty "reliable" when it comes to being a three point shooter. it's going to be real hard to find another three-point shooter as "reliable" as him.[Edited on May 13, 2015 at 8:56 AM. 5/13/2015 8:48:56 AM
since im biting on this and continuing a minor argument/discussion over a player who is not even on the team anymore...turner was not reliable. he was streaky, therefore padding that ~37% stat (which i agree is solid overall)... but he wasn't a night in-night out consistently reliable 3 point threat, nor clutch at all. lacey was our guy for that and we need the void filled.
5/13/2015 9:22:20 AM
streaky is as relative a term as sn2 nucleophilic substitution. Even Lacey would have off nights. Ralston go the most heat from it because that was basically his one damn job, but he was good enough such that an opposing defense always honored his shot.[Edited on May 13, 2015 at 9:39 AM. Reason : i dunno why we are bitching about Turner all of a sudden.]
5/13/2015 9:28:23 AM
5/13/2015 9:30:45 AM
so who in the acc was a more "reliable" 3 point shooter than turner? i guess some guys who attempted a lot less 3 pointers and made them at a lower percentage, but hit a few at the end of a few games?[Edited on May 13, 2015 at 9:40 AM. Reason : ]
5/13/2015 9:39:56 AM
^^^no "bitching" on my part, i just don't understand some people's "analysis" of sports. it seems that personal biases often trump actual performances. like "remember those two games where he went 1 for 5 from three? and that one time he missed a game winner? that's definitely not "reliable". oh, and he sucks at defense.. Would you consider someone "reliable" if they shot 60% from three, but they missed buzzer-beaters in 3 consecutive games? (double-post, didn't get in quick enough to edit)
5/13/2015 10:23:11 AM
His three-pointers made by game:1,5,0,1,3,3,1,2,4,2,8,1,0,0,4,4,4,5,3,3,3,2,2,2,0,2,4,4,3,3,5,0,4,2,0,4Pretty streaky if you ask me but hardly reliable.Scott wood's last year for comparison (whom I would argue was more reliable than Turner but streaky nonetheless):2,2,5,1,3,2,3,0,1,5,5,1,3,2,4,3,3,2,1,3,3,2,4,3,6,3,5,5,0,1,3,3,7,6,2[Edited on May 13, 2015 at 10:30 AM. it would be cool to see the percentage for each game rather than just the number made. still interesting though.
5/13/2015 10:30:06 AM
^^pretty much every 3 point shooter could be defined as "streaky" and not "reliable" then. nobody shoots 50% (unless you're talking about guys who take 10 three pointers the entire season and makes 6)so again, who in the acc was more "reliable", and why? guys who shot a lot less 3 pointers at a lower percentage, but made a few buzzer beaters? after you determine some "reliable" 3-point shooters, print out their makes in each game. would you consider a guy who made just 2 or 3 every game more reliable (even if he made a lot less total threes than turner, or shot at a lower percentage than turner?)turner had the 5th highest percentage on the most 3-pt attempts in the acc, that's facts, and when it comes to 3-point shooters, i think that's about as "reliable" as it gets.[Edited on May 13, 2015 at 10:50 AM. Reason : ]
5/13/2015 10:34:23 AM
id say paige was most reliable. any game i watched of them that little shit would hit a big 3.. or two of them especially when they needed it most.thats how i would define a reliable player whose job is the 3 point shot."can he hit when they need it most, and in fairness if he gets a good look" not just can he hit a clutch game winning shot once or twice a year.

We need to recruit a "reliable" 3-point shooter, someone who makes 3 or 4 a game, shoots around 50%, and doesn't miss clutch shots.
