that applies to blacks and Asians too. Sub-Saharan Africans have been warring over tribal differences for centuries, and both east and west Asian history is littered with long-standing hatred of other regions. Koreans hating Japanese, Hutus slaughtering Pygmies, Indians hating Pakistanis, everyone in the Arab states hating everyone else.

Of course, and that brings up a great point perhaps more germane to the conversation at hand. The reason blacks in America get to take pride in their race is because their culture identify was stolen from them. It is extremely hard for us to say "my people come from Ghana, so let me take pride in my Ghana heritage. " Many times, all we have to identify with is our race.

But mine was lost as well. It wasn't stolen, but I sure as hell can't relate to anything related to Oktoberfest, outside of good beer of course, even though my family hails from Germany. It has been so many generations, my family over the years has just decided to not follow their past.

So I really have no other identity or heritage than "white."

Europeans weren't hanging around having a kumbaya moment over their whiteness. It sounds like you're just kind of willfully ignoring your heritage, whereas the heritage of most african Americans has been stolen from them. That's a bit like saying "even though I choose not to use my legs, I still want to park in the handicap space like this disabled person gets to. Yes, I understand that he doesn't have legs."

But there's still very clearly a cultural identity there, and having "black pride" is a completely legitimate sentiment.


Also, I think there are daily experiences--unique to black people--that could make them more likely to feel racial pride...
...whereas white folks just want to associate themselves with the accomplishments of some distant (and invariably privileged) white person.

Everyone's culture changes all the time. Your culture is different than your parents' culture.

People are too hung up with retaining their perception of their parents culture, instead of embracing their own unique culture forged through a different social/technological furnace.

It sucks that africans were stripped from their identity, buy they are now Americans that have been here hundreds of years, and they not only retain a uniquely American cultural identity (arguably one of the most unique in the world), but black American cultural evolution is often the driving force behind broader American cultural development.

Culture is supposed to change, adapt, be appropriated, and do its own appropriating.

I only wonder if the attention is focused in the right place though. There aren't enough statistics in the article to get the full picture. If white kids are being turned in at the same rate as black kids, but are getting less suspensions for the same offenses, then yes this is most definitely a problem.

But if there are 5 white kids and 5 black kids, one white kid cusses out a teacher vs 3 black kids cussing out a teacher and all 4 get suspensions, then we need to find out why these 4 kids are cussing out teachers. That would be the appropriate question I think.
