So assuming that the ACC hangs together after adding one more school, does that mean the Big 12 would be picked apart?

Inevitably there will only be four major conferences. There are four seats at the table for five conferences. The SEC, the Pac-12 and the B1G are at that table. The ACC and Big XII are fighting for that last seat. Louisville was a proactive move against that.I think that the ACC miscalculated with Rutgers and the NYC market but ND, even as a partial, does help that a bit. And obviously Boston College was an unmitigated disaster. A decision like that in a real company and Swofford wouldn't have a job.[Edited on November 28, 2012 at 7:51 PM. Reason : and yes UL can be proactive and reactive at teh same time]

As I've said, it all boils down to what the Pac 12 does. If they want to get to 16, they either have to take Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State, thus killing the Big XII (Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, K State, TCU, and WVU does not a conference make), OR they settle for the Boise States of the world. If the latter happens, we're boned. The Big XII needs 6 teams to get to 16 and can easily poach FSU, GT, Clemson, and 3 more if the ACC buyout doesn't stick. That leaves 2 ACC teams to the B1G (UNC & UVA) and 2 to the SEC (VT & ???), with 4 + ND left over to merge with the Big Least to be "the best of the rest". Not an attractive option. That sticks us with the Big XII, the SEC's 16th choice, or in the best of the rest. However, if the Big XII collapses, you can expect those 2 of those 6 leftovers to join the B1G (Kansas and Iowa State?) and 2 to try to beg their way into the SEC (K State and WVU?). That puts Baylor and TCU out in the cold, since the ACC will get to 16 with ND and another Big Least school.

tv markets are great when you're at the top and you're trying to get even more money. tv markets don't mean a whole lot when you don't have a single good football program in your conference.

I was just listening to Bay Area sports radio this afternoon and they kept insisting how the PAC 12 DOESN'T want anymore teams. The idea being that they've got what they want (championship game and preserved rivalries) and that they'd water down the conference with anybody else. Not sure if this is true, but it seems to make sense...
11/28/2012 8:44:17 PM
was that a PAC12 spokesperson, or just a local yokel?
11/28/2012 9:43:41 PM
the PAC 12 will never take a school like Boise State. There really aren't any other "real" schools in the Western time zone/ Mountain time zone region that would make sense. I think they will sit back and wait to see what happens in the future, and try to build up the divisions/new rivalries

and then there's Greg Swaim posting this on twitter:Greg Swaim Show ?@GSwaim#B1G taking either #UVA, #GT or #UNC, whichever two will join first. Expecting #SEC talks with #VT and #NCState. Then #BIG12 may act later.
11/28/2012 11:11:23 PM
I'm actually hoping State moves to the SECTime for a fresh start. The ACC has gone to absolute shit since expansion and I see no reason to stick around.
11/28/2012 11:23:40 PM
LET'S DO THIS Y'ALL
11/28/2012 11:24:46 PM
haha Greg Swaim.that said, SEC, SEC, SEC
11/28/2012 11:27:32 PM
IMO by the time the ACC loses AQ status there will be no more AQ because an expanded playoff will make the BCS bowls irrelevant. I hope we don't go to the sec.[Edited on November 28, 2012 at 11:54 PM. Reason : ]

if this were a 9 team acc and everyone was staying, then i'd agree w/ you, but the acc is going to lose more members and replace them w/ shit like uconn. if we don't leave we're going to end up in a conference that is unrecognizable. i'd rather be a new school in a conference on solid footing than a charter member of the new big east.

big 12 and acc should just merge
11/29/2012 1:38:41 PM
We need to poke the bear (PAC12) and get them wheeling and dealing again. IMO the PAC12 hold the most power as the biggest domino. No other conference can really try to poach them. Where would they go? Split between Big12 and Big10? Unlikely.Big 10 can get: OSU, WSU, Oregon, WashingtonBig 12 can get: ASU, Arizona, USC, UCLANot sure about Stanford, Cal, Colorado, Utah. I can see Stanford and Cal going either way, but Colorado and Utah potentially left out. That kind of mega-shift is very unlikely, but wtf does the PAC12 think is going to happen if they don't build up to 16. They should take TX, Ok, OkS, TT. That would cause Big12 to dissolve, and save the ACC. I can see the SEC picking up the major left overs, such as Kansas. Big10 could even nab a few like KState or Iowa StCome on PAC12, get with the program u bunch of hippis

I was just looking at the N&O and reading the story about Maryland leaving and Louisville joining. Their picture for the story was Hansbrough dunking on Louisville in the 2008 tournament.

Being mediocre in the SEC is a step up from being mediocre in the ACC
11/29/2012 6:00:32 PM
11/29/2012 6:03:32 PM
We could beat Vanderbilt some years too
11/29/2012 6:14:04 PM
and Ole Miss/Miss State/Mizzou. I don't think it would be the end of the world, Vandy went 8-4 this year and almost 9-3, just load up the OCC with cupcakes (if the holes go to the B1G, let them have dook and we'll take wake) and win 2 conference games a year to go 6-6, better to be 9th in the SEC than 4th in the ACC. probably a better bowl game, too
11/29/2012 6:18:03 PM
11/29/2012 8:31:40 PM
We're barely a perennial 6-8 win team in the ACC as it is
11/29/2012 8:34:25 PM
We should go un train on the big south
11/29/2012 8:39:19 PM
i really don't see us hiring some homerun coach that's going to rack up titles regardless of which conference we are in anyway, so this debate is pretty pointless
11/29/2012 8:39:32 PM
11/29/2012 8:39:57 PM
yeah but we suck this year, so that point is moot
11/29/2012 8:42:30 PM
like... programs can get better you guys.
11/29/2012 8:54:20 PM
well, in the de facto toilet bowl, our future brother in arms Loiusville beat future B1G punching bag Rutgers for what will probably be the Big Least's penultimate BCS Bowl bid
